SEGA: Plans For New Character In Sonic Project 2017
A big Sonic live stream took place in Japan with folks like Takashi Iizuka attending and answering questions recently, due to the release of Sonic Toon (AKA Sonic Boom): Fire & Ice, and we’re starting to see news from the event coming in. Sonic Project 2017 was mentioned at one point, apparently, and thanks to Source Gaming, we know what some of the Japanese discussion was. The tweet is below.

New characters quite usually don’t go wrong. Do it, and nail it, Sega.
And here we go.
Just as long as it isn’t Sonic Boom, or Sally. Sorry, but she doesn’t fit in with the Sega Sonic canon. Her mindset is based on the Dic/Archie continuities. And yet, people keep requesting for her to be in a Sonic game.
In any event, I hope this means more playable characters (or any aside from Sonic, modern or classic).
Sonic 2006 once again?
Sonic 2006 done right?
Sonic Adventure 2 done right?
Any game with more character in 3D done right?
Hopefully not Sonic Heroes done right, I prefer playing my multiple characters one stage at a time.
That’s surprising considering the current state of things…
Tho really, is there really a NEED for a new character tho? Whatever this is dealing with, it’s obviously somewhat time-travel related, so Silver would techically be the perfect to reintroduce here. I mean, maybe this could be a Chaos or Tikal kinda deal. I just hope that they actually have a personality unlike the Mildly Annoying Six and actually fit into the Sonic universe better than they did.
Also don’t shove every other past character to the side just for this new character please. It’s bad enough they’re given as much of the shaft currently as is, we don’t need a new character to come in and push it even further.
Yeah can’t we just have this be the Sonic Xenoverse of the series? I mean with all the time travel indications you’re giving off, you may as well give Silver a similar kind of role in that.
Dimps did work on both Rush and the Xeno games so it definely would fit.
What’s be even cooler is if it was more the “Eyes of Heaven” of Sonic. Taking the same concept that Generations was doing but on a much bigger and epic scale that includes homages to various parts of Sonic history.
I’ve just been marathoning Kai so much that seeing Trunks makes me want to see Silver again. T.T”
Future Sonic?
What would the point be in making a “future Sonic”? That would essentially be signing a contract in blood that “this is what we’re going to make Sonic games like some day in the future”. Fans would be holding them up to that kind of a “promise” and instead of arriving there naturally they would have to force themselves to make games like that.
Or to put it another way, it would be like 2015 in Back to the Future. Just cause you present it that way doesn’t mean that that’s how it will end up.
Unless they made Future Sonic to have his appearance and gameplay style constantly changing to make reference of the fact that the future games could go in so many different directions…I guess that would be kind of clever, if not daunting though.
I hope he / she will be designed by Yuji Uekawa!!…
Well, I hope it’s not the Sonic from SONIC TOON!!…
Since no one else has brought it up…maybe a non-Boom Sticks?
People don’t generally bring up terrible ideas.
Exactly so bring Sticks in! 😛
Marine?
One’s a badger, the other’s a racoon, one’s crazy, one’s spunky, one uses a boomerang, one just tells people what to do. Kind of a clear difference, even if the design is a little too uncanny.
This reminds me of a similar conversation:
Homer: Which one’s Selma, again?
Marge: She’s the one who likes Police Academy movies and Hummel figurines, and walking through the park on clear autumn days.
One is a good character the other is Sticks.
Personally I’d prefer Sticks over Marine any day. At least she can be written off as “zany”. I find Marine just to be well-meaning but way too obnoxious.
You mean Marine?
You know… this weirdly makes me more hopeful for PS2017. Introducing new characters is what the Sonic Team I knew and, yeah, kinda loved would do, especially when they were trying to push a story with the game. It’s that little extra sign that they’ve gotten over their anxiety from critics and are going to try again with the semi-serious Sonic.
I mean, my expectations for the new character aren’t exactly high, but nevertheless, this news makes me happy.
Could be a new villian like the time eater in generations or Mephiles. Who knows? We still have sonic mania and they have time to polish the game more than 06. I think it will come out ok
Just a thought, but how about you start using the characters you actually have properly before introducing new ones? Or better yet, how about using them AT ALL?!
i was about to post something similar but then i saw your post! Yes! The current characters in the canon should be used before talking about taking on another one!
Oh, a new character? As opposed to 6? I am intrigued…though doesn’t every game usually introduce at least one new character? Or is this supposed to be a new mainstay like Shadow and Silver?…when are you going to make Silver relevant again Sega?! Um, anyway, I am interested about this new character, despite the countless other fans who are going to speak against it any second now.
If it’s gonna be yet another Classic incarnation (Knux) then I’m definitely gonna scream.
Right now I’m guessing Dreamcast Sonic from the known premise, but who knows: it might be a truly fresh and new character, but I’m no longer willing to give them the benefit of doubt…not after spitting Classic Sonic into my face twice in a row after explicitly stating that it’ll never happen again.
Don’t expect the new character to be playable. Expect the new character to fill the Chip/Yacker role, which I’m completely fine with. If we do get a new main stay/ playable character, then that’s pretty dang awesome, but I’m not holding that theory near and dear to my heart because I don’t want to be disappointed.
Yeah I could see it going either way honestly. A new enemy is kind of a given at this point…unless Eggman is seriously going balls-out in his “screw the pretenses, I’m just going to enslave the world through fire now” scheme the trailer is suggesting…in that case, that would be awesome.
Why, just let your other characters be playable…
Poochie!
Most likely
see that i was right a new anniversary character.
I’ll just say this: please let it be an anthropomorphic animal, like Sonic and company (minus Omega). And maybe make it a female.
I’m waiting for someone to say “ITS NO USE!” here. :-p ooops I guess I said it 😆 haha
Ooooooh, this just got incredibly interesting….
Why not just use the characters we already know?
C’MON SEGA, STOP MAKING THESE DECISIONS THAT MAKE NO SENSE!
Why not just write with the proper lettering you were taught to in elementary school?
C’MON PEOPLE, STOP WRITING IN ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME WHEN IT MAKES NO SENSE TO!!!
Hopefully they mean new as in Time Eater new.
YES YOU’RE RIGHT!
ATTENTION EVERYONE!
WHAT IF THE NEW CHARACTER IS A VILLAIN?
REMEMBER THOSE ROBOTS IN THE TRAILER?
WOULD EGGMAN REALLY BE THAT MENACING?
Repeating my question from Sonic Stadium, is the ALL CAPS meant to be ironic? If so, great impression of a totally mature Sonic fan.
Um, Eggman is the guy who’s held Amy rose at gun-point in SA2, nearly blew up all of Station Square when he was pushed to his limit in SA1, built his version of the Death Star thru 3 whole games in the Classic series.
Eggman may be goofy, but he’s far from an idle threat.
That went out the window when they made his defining character trait be obsessing over his past failures starting with Unleashed.
Uh, not really. Eggman still tried to use a god of darkness to harness his army and build the capital of what would become his global empire, terrorizing countless countries in the process. Then he tried to forcefully mind control the whole planet by torturing and corrupting an entire alien species, going so far as to do the same thing to their mother. Then he decided to compromise all of space and time so that he can stop the one obstacle to his goals, not caring in the slightest that he was crippling reality. And most recently he tried to steal energy from the planet (again…though more directly this time I guess) which as shown could have killed off most of the environment and it’s inhabitants if pushed too far or kept up for too long, as well as his merciless abusement and enslavement of another race of creatures. Yeah he’s got silly character traits but it doesn’t change the fact that he has proven time and again that he is a force to be reckoned with and that he should never be underestimated. Really the only thing that has changed since 2006 is that he hasn’t really displayed a dramatic show of force to emphasize how dangerous he is (well, except for the opening to Unleashed, that was pretty convincing).
I think if anything, the main problem is the over-emphasis on Orbot and Cubot’s comic relief. It wasn’t too bad in Unleashed since he only had like a few scenes but come Colors and Lost World, they pretty much overtake a good chunk of scenes he’s in.
I honestly prefer Eggman on his own villain wise, he’s a show-off but he’s very much serious. Basicly like Megamind or Mumbo Jumbo from Teen Titans. It’s all about the PRESENTATION!
Kinda the reason why I never really enjoyed SatAM’s super dark version of him. It loses all that great villain pizzazz.
@ Robothobo64 I usually tend to give SatAM a bit of a break since it was established way before the series got it’s bearings established. I will say, I feel like between SatAM’s entertainingly sinister Robotnik and AoStH’s ridiculously bumbling buffoon Rrrrrrrrrobotnik there was a good middle-ground villain, one that was a threat to be taken seriously and actually made sense for certain characters to fear him, and yet still showed off a quirky personality that makes him entertaining to watch and makes sense for characters like Sonic to get the upper hand on him, whether through taunting or blowing stuff up.
It feels like Sega Eggman (sEGGaMan?…) has mostly stayed in this middle zone, but has constantly been leaning to varying degrees towards each side. I’d argue that Adventure Eggman may have felt a bit too serious and less lively at times, but at least he still managed to seem like a serious threat. Lately he seems to have the opposite problem where he is absolutely hilarious and quotable but also doesn’t seem to be that competent of a villain.
I really do agree that Unleashed seemed to capture that perfect middleground with him, in that he was flamboyant and hilarious while at the same time still being grounded and menacing in his own right. And of course, that ego and presentation thing you mentioned was a major component to him. I really would like to see more of a return to that kind of balance, and I know it’s probably becoming a tired cliche at this point, but I really do feel like the comic series has done a good job at managing that balance as well, even WITH Orbot and Cubot around.
It just goes to show that you can potentially make anything work if you just know the right ways to do so.
SSJ, what if they brought his threat back?
well, if it’s true that Ian Flynn is writting then yes, Eggman would be that menacing.
With that being said though, I’m looking forward to seeing this new character!
