Here’s The Sonic Forces Custom Character Press Release
Sonic Forces™ Introduces New, Third Gameplay Style
Burbank, California — May 16, 2017 —Today, SEGA® revealed the third gameplay style in Sonic Forces is a powerful gadget touting customizable character. For the first time in the Sonic series, players can create their own original Hero Character, and customize how the character plays and how it looks. This newly revealed playstyle in Sonic Forces is in addition to the previously revealed fast-paced action of Modern Sonic and the thrilling platforming of Classic Sonic.
In this just announced gameplay style, players will be equipping their custom Hero Character with one of a variety of powerful unique gadgets called Wispons. Wisponsare an evolution of the Color Powers fromSonic Colors and double as both offensive abilities and as a way to platform through levels quickly. Along with the Wispon, the Hero Character will have a grappling hook they can utilize to quickly traverse across zones. Players can also customize the Hero Character’s looks by choosing and swapping between hundreds of accessories and outfit options to change the character’s appearance as they play through the game.
There are seven base animal types that players can select from, each with varying special abilities:
- Wolf – Automatically draws in rings when near them
- Rabbit – Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
- Cat – Keeps one ring after being hit
- Dog – Restarts with five rings after the player dies
- Bear – Blows away enemies with a homing attack
- Bird – Flies high with double jump abilities
- Hedgehog – Collects rings when getting damaged
No matter what Hero the player chooses to create, it will be featured throughout the entire game. In a first for the Sonic franchise, a character the player creates will be a key part of the story, appearing not only in cut scenes, but by being a crucial element in helping Sonic reclaim the world from Eggman’s domination.
Sonic Forces will be available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, & PC this Holiday. Join the Uprising to take back the world from Dr. Eggman.

Today the Sonic Franchise.
Tomorrow, Super Mario Bros
And then…..EVERY IP IN HISTORY!
(finishes off by tipping over a glass of chocolate milk)
What are you referring to?
Custom the OC, do not steal. lol
I’m both excited and nervous for this game, but this will be pretty interesting. It definitely seems like 2017 is the year for Sonic fans.
I better get started designing a fan character, I guess.
Just makes sure that it’s a wolf, rabbit, cat, dog, bear, bird or hedgehog. 😉
Oh my God.
Which suit at SEGA came up with this idea? It must have been Iizuka. It has to be. He’s the only one who would think of something this ridiculous and ballsy.
I don’t know, man.
They should record lines for both male and female versions of each species. Or at least one male voice that can apply
to any species and one female voice to apply to any species.
And maybe a selection of names so whatever you choose, Sonic will be able to say it. Otherwise, I feel like the character is going to be a nameless mute which I’m kinda meh about. Or they’re speak without voice overs and just use text. Also meh. And Classic Sonic is already not speaking so…. I guess only Modern Sonic will talk?
Also lol at Sonic Team’s response to our requests. “You can play as ANYBODY but Sonic’s friends again. Like, literally.” lol
I was just about to mention the voices, I kinda hope their are voices to choose from or even to make your character mute.
I personally hope that Sonic Team doesn’t give this character TOO big of a role in the story and that the spotlight is still on the two Sonics. I still remember how Sega decided to make Sonic himself a mere background prop at best in the story of his 15th anniversary game (which was NAMED AFTER HIM no less), with all the spotlight instead being on Shadow and that game’s newcomer Silver…
Why did my comment end up as a reply to yours? I meant it to be a general comment. Sorry…
MugiMikey is going to have a field day with this one.
So where’s ground squirrel option?
OC jokes aside, I think today’s reveal went pretty well. It seems like the overall reaction to this has been positive. We’ll just have to see if 20 people make videos this month talking about how “the Sonic fanbase can’t be pleased” despite the positive reaction from the majority of us.
Okay, sure.
We can’t have any of the long established playable characters just WAITING to be used, or even a decently written character unique for this game, but we can have some throwaway custom character creator that has all the reused moves from the side missions in Generations.
GG guys GG.
THANK YOU SEGA, I LOVE THIS!!! This is far better and more fresh than just another new character. And I really don’t care about all the ‘OC jokes’ that will inevitably happen, this game’s for the real fans not the haters. I will pre-order this game for PC as soon as possible.
This is basically what I was asking for in several posts over the years, where I opined about the ability of being able to play as any character. This is awesome, surreal, extraordinary! I only wish we could choose from the stock official characters from the franchise as well as the custom characters.
Welp, I don’t know what to think. I feel like I should be happy to let my pre-pubescent self come out and create the OC I made way back when, but still. Do we really need the 3rd style. Can’t we just have an actual modern sonic game? Colors is my favorite game of all time, and I really just want another game with that style, not a Sonic Generations 2, as amazing as the first was. I don’t know… I guess until I can play this game, TBD.
It’s not Generations 2 that’s been made clearer over the months, It’s a random collection of ideas based off what they think is good idea coming from the devs who thought Lost World and Boom was a good idea. What’s been shown of the two Sonic’s doesn’t build off what they had in Generations in any meaningful way, this is blatantly displayed with the game’s GHZ looking like a Generations mod. So on top of what time that could have been spent build on those two styles has been spent on this custom character thing that will likely be used to pad out the game length to degrees that will really piss people off and will be another failed venture into “exciting” new things by Sonic Team.
I suspect because of this custom character the amount of content given to the two Sonics will be halved compared to Generations and that’s not a great considering how short that game was as.
The worst timeline scenario is that the custom character has always been the focus of this game with the Sonics being a extra hence why Classic uses the exact physics from the soon to be 6 year old Generations along with a minor touchup of it’s GHZ, this seems possible when you consider that the custom character lets Sonic Team fully indulge it’s random game design soup obsession that crippled so many of it’s games. This also gives complete context to Iizuka stressing that this wasn’t a sequel to Generations.
To me, it just feels lazy.
“We couldn’t actually program in different characters so let’s just let them make their own”
Not to mention most of those moves are just reused stuff from the side missions in Generations.
A big fan of your posts. Worst casr scenario, how bad could Sonic Forces be?
B Grade? 8 out of 10? 7.5 out of 10? What do you think?
I am a Fan of your critical style of poating. I would like your opinion.
So basically the new character is NO ONE.
And how are they going to tailor the plot towards the “U R the Star” character in a Sonic game?
At least with Fire Emblem, Robin and Corrin are their own characters, instead of mute blank avatars.
How hard is to actually bring back Tails’ flying or Knuckles’ gliding and ability to scale walls, straight out of Sonic Adventure (1998). Did they toss all code and resources of the game out the window after the Dreamcast died?
Funny you say that since the moves in the trailer were basicly the re-used moves from Generations and I imagine most of the attacks and such are just going to be that and re-hashed wisps.
Because who NEEDS putting thought and effort into other playable characters? Just give them a custom character creator with a bunch of random assets and let them go crazy! We’re too lazy to put in Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Espio, Blaze, or Silver in properly, so do it yourselves!”
“How hard is to actually bring back Tails’ flying or Knuckles’ gliding and ability to scale walls, straight out of Sonic Adventure (1998). Did they toss all code and resources of the game out the window after the Dreamcast died?”
Because game developers have to deal with much different coding from a more advanced console, and devs can’t simply copy/paste a coding from a game that’s nearly 20 years old. That’s not how game development works.
Yet they can reuse assets from a 6 year old game to make a hodge-poge character editor instead of going thru the effort of programming in these characters from scratch while still being based off their original counterparts. Sonic Mania seems to be able to do that, don’t see how Sonic Team can’t.
“Yet they can reuse assets from a 6 year old game” Except they weren’t reused assets. They don’t even look the same.
“a hodge-poge character editor” Character editors have a crap-ton of things to use. It has always been this way. Why is that a bad thing? Besides, there’s nothing confusing and/or disorderly about it.
“Sonic Mania seems to be able to do that” Because they’re sprites. It’s much, much easier to reuse sprites, especially when you’re basically turning them from 16-bit to 32-bit. Not that hard to do at all.
“don’t see how Sonic Team can’t.” I already explained why.
Did I ask for an echo?
Also, it works for the Mario games, both 2D, 2.5D, and 3D. Not only that, they also improve upon the originals.
Don’t dispose of what isn’t broken, just make it better.
it’s a bit early to judge on that front, they said the OC is gonna be important to the plot and appear in cutscenes, so I hope they at least give him a personality and a voice (even if it’s a generic bland one).
We’ll have to see if they’re going the Robin/Saints Row Boss/Captain Shepard way, or the Link/Pokemon/DBXenoverse way.
No ECHIDNAS? No BATS?
I suppose, they don’t want us to play as a character that can glide. Too close to playing ad Knuckles.
I guess Knuckles is the Echidna… and Knuckles will be the Echidna..
Of course there’s no Echidnas! or do you want Ken Penders to come sue your ass?
I’ll call his bluff and raise,
A gigantic middle finger. Unlike others, I am NOT afraid of that aggravating excuse for a human being.
No foxes either.
I’ll bet that who ever plays this game will customize a rabbit character to look like Bugs Bunny.
At least three comments refer to the character creator as lazy and the game is reusing assets from 6 years back. You’re entitled to your opinions but Sega has stated this is an updated Hedgehog engine months ago, so think of this as establishing in what works. What did you want, another stab at reworking the Sonic formula a la Lost World and Boom?
Soo many complainers. I saw more videos on the crappy Sonic fan base than actual vids on the character creator on YouTube. I’m not saying ‘just be content’ I just don’t understand how more people aren’t more excited.
