Tyson Hesse: ‘We Would Hear Little Things, Here And There’ About Archie/SEGA Talks
Even before we learned about Archie and SEGA going their separate ways, it was becoming clear that the freelance team behind the comics weren’t really sure what was going on either. Now, thanks to Tyson Hesse, we have a little more insight into just how much they had been kept in the dark about the hiatus.
We would hear little things here and there, but considering the level these talks were being had at, it would have been very strange for a bunch of contractors to be looped in on it all. I wasn’t very optimistic, but I tend to hope for the best in most situations. It’s a shame to think of all the work that was completed but never released. Both mine, and others. I’d say the biggest disappointment is just how much a fizzle this whole situation wound up being. I was hoping a best case scenario would have been a short-term contract extension to at least send the comic to a respectful end. But to just drop out in the middle of several storylines is such a thud of an ending to a series being made by people who cared so much. Until the whole story behind this whole thing inevitably spills though, I would just say please don’t be too hasty to blame one party or the other. This whole thing is likely a very complicated situation.
For now though, thanks for reading the books all these years and the entire crew is grateful for the support.
So there you have it. The talks were being held at such a high level that they simply didn’t think it would work to inform the team about things, with nothing more than “little things here and there”. It’s very unfortunate that the team had absolutely no idea what would become of their own project, but it seems the nature of business and some complications prevented that from happening.
In any case, we know what the results of the talks were. And so does the team.

It’s really hard for me not to blame Sega, to not be bitter about something that kept so many fans invested in the Sonic series through all the gaming lull’s and disasters.. Just being shoved aside and shut down without a proper conclusion so close to a milestone issue..
If they can be so careless about one of the franchises longest and greatest legacies, I’m not why I should bother continuing to be a fan.. It’s something I’m questioning for the first time in 26 years.. Even Sonic 2006 didn’t manage that..
I share your feelings on this one,especially it feels like they were planning this for awhile now before the hiatus like some indirect involvement with their shifting the brand when they laid off people. And knowing them they gonna sweep this under the rug like it never happen or shift blame to sega of Japan or something like what they did with the original voice cast were switch for 4 kids.
It’s more likely Archie who is to blame here for getting SEGA dragged into four lawsuits due to their own incompetence, allure to keep to the mandates as well as pushing for the old characters to remain included in the comic despite being the cause of the first lawsuits and the current one.
My guess is SEGA PR got fed up with Archie insisting on being allowed to use the FFs while failing to provide SEGA with any contracts to use on the Fulop case to get it dismissed or settled.
I feel the same way. Right now I don’t give a shit about sonic forces. I feel that sonic mania will be my last sonic purchase assuming sega shoots itself in the foot again and lets iizuka boot whitehead+padoga+headcanon because that’s most of sega’s actions, fucking up with one success in-between.
@ACK wait you don’t care about sonic forces?

If you respect the comic and the people behind it so much at least try and behave with the maturity they expect from you and all the fans, I’m not saying none is to blame for this but there is no need for aimless bashing.
I will try but I smell bad PR and bad decisions made over ten years ago making this a problem that should of never been one in the first place
@RAW
… I just wrote a lot.. then it glitched away..
I had written that nothing I said was aimless, that I don’t hold Archie in some high regard..
If I owned SEGA, I would push for one last issue to bring closure to a comic series that’s been around almost as long as the games.. Not for the money, not for Archie, but for the fans.. and that SEGA is the one who ultimately has the power over the character..
I need to catch up reading the comics.. x.X; I just recently found out all the story arcs concluded and that makes me feel better about the whole thing..
It could be a lot worse, but I don’t think it’s immature to expect better.. Especially for a comic series that’s been around nearly as long as the games.. (I feel it especially since I was there from the beginning of both)
Ow.. repeating myself in that.. x.X; Wish I could edit! Yeah.. that glitchy deletion of my previous post really messed me up!!
@DWAPOOK
Hope you’re reading this, I get what you mean but the truth is that we don’t really know what happened behind the curtains, maybe Sega wanted a proper ending to the comics but Archie didn’t agree, maybe because Archie Comics wants to shift focus to Archie and Riverdale and that’s why they are ending their relationship, that would explain why Sega may be looking for a new publisher (instead of just staying with Archie), or maybe is because a new development in the Pulop lawsuit that caused the cancellation of every comic since February (I mean the comics were ready for release, in other circumstances they could have released them while Sega and Archie were in talks, right?), of course this is only congeture from my part, basically anything could have happened and just because Sega was the one to pull the trigger doesn’t mean they are the ones to blame.
I understand your feeling on that note. Sonic 06 was a terrible aspect because its very far much dark then shadow the hedgehog game. i hate to say this but, its been a good run with the sonic Archie comic’s. it got some good taste. I guess SEGA is just gonna close the book on its relationship with the company.
I blame Archie for this, simply because so much of the s*** that has happened to the comic has been the sole result of Archie failing to secure contracts, copyrights as well as allowing writers to routinely violate SEGA’s mandates and bash game characters if they didn’t like them.
Basically, they don’t even care about what they are doing with SEGA characters. they just want to eat it up.
I’m going to miss the Archie Sonic comics.
