Takashi Iizuka On Sonic Adventure: “I Can See The Rough Edges It Has, Which Really Makes Me Want To Remake It Again”
Well this was sudden to hear from Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka. He said all this in a Retro Gamer magazine interview:
“It was the first high-speed 3D action game that also featured a scenario highlighted with six different stories, the A-life Chao, six unique styles of gameplay – it is a unique game offering even 20 years after its release. At the time, it also wasn’t just a solitary software release, it was the title to bring people to the Dreamcast and we were given the budget to make something to showcase the hardware. However, it was the very first 3D game that we worked on and looking at it now I can see the rough edges it has, which really makes me want to remake it again.”

This could honestly mean nothing, and even if it did, it probably won’t be for at least another 4 years before we even see a Sonic Adventure remake get announced.
However, the fact that he said this shows that he is thinking about it and that gets me excited. A Sonic Adventure remake is the one thing that I want the most out of the series right now and it could honestly do Sonic Team some good to remake it.
I really hope that, if they remake SA1, that they take their time, make it as polished as Colors and Gens, and stay faithful to the original as much as possible. Personally, I’d love to see some changes made to the game itself. I’d like to see all of the rival battles and some of the boss fights completely redone to make them more dynamic and fun. I’d also like if characters like Big and Amy weren’t mandatory to get the final story (of course, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles at least should be mandatory). I’d also like to see some beta content make it in as bonuses (Windy Hill Auto Demo, etc). Other than that, general bug and collision fixes would be fantastic.
All in all, I’m fairly optimistic when it comes to a Sonic Adventure remake because I’m certain Iizuka and the whole of Sonic Team know what this game means to people. I don’t think they’d “reimagine” or “remaster” the game, similarly to how Pokémon Let’s Go did it, but if they did, I’m sure they wouldn’t change that much.
God no, the last thing this franchise needs is another rehash or rethread, we’ve been getting nostalgia pandering non stop ever since Generations, Sonic has been effectively stagnant for the last 6 years. Give us something completely original for once and then you can think about your remakes.
We’ve been getting CLASSIC rehashes and retreads. They’ve treated the Dreamcast era like a redheaded stepchild. I wouldn’t mind them pandering to the Dreamcast at all.
Then he should push to doing it! Personally, I don’t want an Adventure 3 right now because with the current state of Sonic, it wouldn’t fit with the previous games. Hut remaking SA1 and SA2 would help Sonic Team get back into the swing of things.
Agreed. I’d also love a remake of SONIC HEROES and add the teams that were scrapped. Think of the graphics of today. Its be amazing
Give Sonic Adventure 1 through Heroes the Crash and Spyro treatment they deserve already. It is a cash cow just waiting to be milked for all it’s worth. Knowing SEGA, though, they will just be arrogant about it and allow this idea to fall into the dustbin of history. That’s why their silly Japanese commercials still showcase their failed Sonic 4 experiment which they must consider as some sort of success.
I don’t even know. I’m just afraid they’ll Dimps-ize everything like they’ve been doing for an eternity…
It think it is a good idea. The new Sonic Team then learns how the old game worked. The knowledge they pick up should then be used to create a new Sonic game which has a potential to turn out great.
