Sonic PR Announces End Of Partnership With Archie Comics
It’s official. SEGA and Archie Comics are going their separate ways.
The official Sonic PR has announced this just moments ago. They do, however, say that “this does not mark the end of Sonic in comics”. What exactly that means is unknown, but one thing is for sure. The Sonic PR indicates that it was a move done by SEGA of America, a “decision to take a different direction for the series that will be announced at a later date”. Again, the exact meaning of this is unknown. We don’t know if this means the comics will shift publishers, if they’ll be toned down to being one-off issues, or what is going on.
Either way, it’s the end of an era.

Oh, well. All good things, and all that. I’m going to miss the comic.
While all things must come to an end someday, it’s very unfortunate that this is how the conclusion to the Archie run had to be. I feel for all the fans that were praying for a different resolution to the months of silence.

I see your clip, and raise you this one: https://youtu.be/SvTn8Qp8FAU?t=981
sad news, but… not entirely unexpected.. hope dark horse or IDW picks it up though.
I’ll bet the different direction is shit and dumb, and they’re totally pulling a Berne Stolar, i.e. have arbitrary standards and making decisions based on their own scewed opinions and not what people actually want.
I could be wrong. Just don’t see a reason to be optomisic.
A huge shame. I couldn’t be more disappointed with this news.
So then… Who owns Sally, Bunnie and all the other characters? Is it Sega or Archie?
Sega owns them, always had
SEGA owns everything in the comics, Archie merely hosts them.
Thank you. That’s all that matter now. Hopefully Sega does something with them.
Sega own the copyrights to the Knothole Freedom Fighters (Princess Sally, Antoine, Bunnie, Rotor)…
Here’s the problem though.. SEGA doesn’t care about the knothole freedom fighters. =(
Sega of America goofs once again. Can’t even think of a reason for why this could happen besides the whole Penders fiasco, but since he’s not involved anymore, what could the problem be? Are they scared that someone else, maybe Ian, will pull the same thing?
What a ride this has been. I started reading the comics exactly 17 years ago, and to see it end like this is just bittersweet.
Sega in general seems to be on a quest to streamline the vision and identity for the Sonic franchise. In that light, I can see why they thought that having a long-running comic with an largely different continuity didn’t make sense. I could take back everything if future comics are way different than that vision, but for now, that’s how I see it.
It’s worth noting that the Penders lawsuit wasn’t the end of the legal troubles. A Fulop one has been in limbo for a while now.
Wait, I thought the Fulop case was outright dismissed before anything major could happen.
That’s what I thought, too.
But apparently not.

It’s strange. I was never an avid follower of the comics, but I feel a great sense of loss. I guess it’s because the comic was just always there. No matter what happened with the games, the comics were always sort of this pillar of the franchise at large. And now it’s gone.
Really, though, it’s the uncertainty of it all that’s the worst. Does anyone else feel the same way?
Everything we got from the comics are gone now. I guess they can’t reconsider there partnership.
Someone should file a petition to get SEGA to reconsider their decision.
This is a business decision. Unless you have dollars, there’s no sense in it.
Well it been a nice run. I guess SEGA can’t change there minds.
Now let’s hope Sega strikes a deal with IDW to be the new Sonic the Hedgehog comic book publisher before 2017 ends and/or 2018 begins!
I don’t care who gets the publishing rights… All I care is if the freedom fighters will be there… (they probably won’t)
F**king finally! Hey, don’t get me wrong I am upset that the comic is gone too, but at least this “in talks” crap is finally over. Our only hope now is that a new publisher will pick up the franchise and that Ian and some of the other former writers/artists will be allowed to work on it.
Awesome! This is the best news I’ve heard all night.
Yes, this’ll sting many fans but it cuts out the cancerous lawsuits and crap furry drama canon that have turned the comic into a joke. Finally, at least part of the Sonic Franchise Dumpster fire is out.
Now hopefully whatever new comic (and there will be a new one) doesn’t fuck up like this one did.
i dunno, I kinda liked SatAM and the comics, rather than TAoSTH and to a lesser extent (of what I have seen) sonic boom. Character development, having characters deal with more personal issues while still trying to save the world was more relatable than “ooh look, gurls, hur hur hur, and chili dogs!”
but that’s just me
As for more “personal issues” bah. Spider-man had that, the Sonic comic had ugly Knuckles worship, softcore furry porn, and terrible art.
Granted, the Pendering reboot fixed a lot of this but that was dumb since they should have just restarted at #1 and killed the original canon because low and behold, another lawsuit over characters.
It’s funny cause this was supposed to be a licensed comic about the SaTam cartoon. Really, it should have ending when the TV show did but at that point i wasn’t a dumpster fire.
For the record, I blame Archie for this snafu ending to the comics.
Four lawsuits in less than a decade over material produced by Archie that they said SEGA owned yet actually failed to get on writing.
Repeated violations of contract and mandates, writers who kept portraying Sonic in a negative light for cheap drama.
There’s a limit to everything and I think SEGA reached theirs if Archie demanded their own characters should stay despite being the cause of so many negative issues.
I just wish they could of at least waited to issue 300
Me too.
Did you bother reading the comic after Penders left? Cus that furry drama was all him or writers like him. Flynn made efforts to avoid that kinda thing… Not sayin’ he got it right 100% of the time..
My suggestion is that since they are ending the series, they should first finish at issue 300 for the main series, and issue 100 for Sonic Universe.
Well, I think we all see this coming, it’s good to finally have some closure and being a big fan of the comics myself I’m glad this came around the time Sonic Forces and Mania are coming out to soften the blow, if this happened last year or in 2015 I probably wouln’t be a fan anymore.
Also I’m glad this not necessarily means the end of Sonic in comics, sure we might face another reboot and we will probably lose the satam exclusive cast but hopefully thy can retain Ian and co as writers and build a new world as big as the previous one.
Good point. If this came in 2015 – 2016, it would have been devastating.
Whatever that direction is if it doesn’t mean a simple transfer of current storyline + all post-1streboot characters + creative team (ian, evan, abt, etc) then I don’t give a fuck what new sonic comic comes out. I’m not accepting the loss of another bright spot in my life and embracing change again because of corporate bullshit.
All i have to say is:
FUCK KEN PENDERS AND EVERY LAST JUDGE AND WRITER COAXED TO HIS SIDE!
Now would be a good time for this site to get the show on the road:

But what am I supposed to do for Sonic Archives?
I feared this would happen. Shit.
What’s going to happen to the sonic comic app. It’s no longer being supported and it says it won’t work with future iPad updates. Does this mean soon we will no longer be able read our downloaded sonic comics that we spent our hard earned money on?
Good question. Someone please answer.
