New Video: Sonic Confirmed for Next Super Smash Bros
Back in May, our reporter Andrea Gil published here a series of credible pieces of information pertaining to Sonic’s role in the then just announced Nintendo-Sega partnership. Today, a key piece of that report has come to fruition.
In a Nintendo Direct held online this morning, the company confirmed Sonic would return to the next Super Smash Brothers title on Wii U and 3DS. A trailer below shows off Sonic, his trademark spin dash, and his assumed stage for the game: Windy Hill from Sonic Lost World.
Not clear at this point is whether this counts as the third game under Sega’s Sonic exclusivity deal for Nintendo.
Screenshots of Sonic in Smash will follow shortly. Be sure to follow our coverage of the blue blur’s return to Nintendo’s fighting flagship as we follow it to launch next year.

I REALLY doubt this is going to be the 3rd exclusive sonic game. REALLY doubt it.
That’s what Skai and Tim were saying. Quit being an ass, and cool it with the caps lock.
That’s exactly what they were saying dumbass.
Owned. Hard.

Win.
Heck yeah! I am so excited for this now! Go Sonic!
I wish they could have other Sonic characters in the game, too, but then again, maybe I really wish there was a Sega Smash game instead.
Well, this is a Nintendo-themed fighting game, not a Nintendo VS. Sega fighting game (as kick-ass as that would be).
I’d love to see Tails or Knuckles join in the fight too, but considering third-party guest brawlers are a rarity as it is, I’m fine with having Sonic as the only rep for the series.
Agreed, we need a Sonic and All-Stars fighting game, or perhaps even a Sonic VS Megaman game like the comic, it could totaly happen since Capcom loves crossover fighting games.
I’d be down for it, on the condition Capcom doesn’t pull that nickle-and-dime bullshit like they tried to do with Street Fighter X Tekken, or re-release like with Ultimate Marvel 3 and Super (now ULTRA -__-) Street Fighter IV.
Lol dude, I’m guessing you don’t get the supply and demand thing in the FGC to understand.
man his model looks fantastic. We’ve come so far from that ugly brawl one. Wasn’t that one based off of his 06 model??
His model looks better than any of the official 3d Sonic models SEGA has made recently…At least it doesn’t look like he is going to barf.
Best announcement ever in the history of the universe.
Besides Pajama Jeans.
And Pizza Forks.
Oh my God you’re right.
The third Sonic game is might be MarioXSonic kart crossover game in next year I guess like Mario & Sonic Kart Speed Rush (SEGA & Nintendo) for Wii U and 3DS.
I am really happy that Sonic is returning for Super Smash Bros., although I am not surprised that he is back, considering the close ties SEGA has to Nintendo nowadays. I kinda wish that they upgraded his move set so that people would stop complaining that he is cheap, but I am happy just to see him return. Do you think Solid Snake will return too? Also, do you know what this means? The Sonic/Mega Man crossover that Archie Comics made can continue in Smash Bros. Huzzah!!
HELL YES
BLUE BOMBER VS BLUR BLUR….AGAIN
I’m ready, this Smash will be awesome
I had just woke up this morning, so I went to ign to read up on what happened on the Nintendo Direct. Half asleep, I saw an article stating Sonic is coming back to ssb. I instantly became wide awake, So glad to see he’s back!
That song all but confirms Nintendo’s current obsession with the Gamecube era makes it even more shocking that we dodged the Seaside Hill bullet here.
Technically it’s been known since the games announcement when the producer said every character from Brawl would be back. But its nice to see his new model. Three way battles with Mario, Mega Man and Sonic will be awesome 😀
I thought the quote was that the roster would be around the same size as Brawl’s, not necessarily that every newcomer from Brawl would return.
He was quoted as saying that “no characters from previous games will be cut from the roster, but at the same time under the time constraints we may not end up finishing them all, so apologies in advance if your favorite character doesn’t make it”, which is why I said they were all pretty much confirmed to be in but at the same time its a relief to see Sonic make it, that means he’s not running the odds of being not done in time.
Sakurai is really confusing with his quotes and interviews tho. Sometimes he says they won’t be able to do something or promise something, then he will say the oposite in another interview. I’m most miffed about the lack of a story mode. That was the best part of Brawl besides the obvious multiplayer mayhem. Loved the cutscenes too. Tho Mega Man walking platform style towards the Yellow Devil at the end of his trailer seemed to imply there would be a story or at least mission mode. Seems conflicting yet again
Did he? Huh. Sakurai’s mind is indeed an enigma.
And yeah, the lack of an adventure mode along the lines of Subspace is kind of disappointing, as I was personally hoping it would’ve been significantly improved upon, but alas…
Hopefully, the Adventure Mode of Melee will take its place instead of being cut altogether.
Where did you hear that?
Since Sonic has been put in the game earlier in the production cycle, does this mean we’ll get original remixes of Sonic music for Smash Bros. 4?
(Pretty neat we get a Windy Hill stage too…but wouldn’t it be similar to the inevitable Mairo Galaxy stage?)
I just hope his moveset is buffed drastically in comparison to his Brawl counterpart.
I loved using Sonic in Brawl, but his punches lacked “oomph”. It took forever to KO with the guy.
This. Actually really sad to see his moveset remaining the same. A buff would be nice, but Sonic really could have used a revamp.
I’m happy for Sonic to come back for the party. Sega and Nintendo must growing good to each other since 2007/2008.
Glad to see him back!!! I was affraid he wouldn’t make it, and I hope they give him a new special move, Sonic was one of my best 3 characters in Brawl and I think one spin dash is enough for him, I hope they use his other special move slot for a tornado attack or a boost dash.
On the website, it looks like they went back to SA artwork
My thoughts in a nutshell.
Well now i infinitely ko with sonic on my 3ds
No, he said that it would be stupid to think that Sonic’s inclusion in Smash 4 counts as the third exclusive game, which it’s not. Smash Bros. is its own series, it doesn’t count towards any of the franchises represented in the games.
And I didn’t call you a dumbass, I called you an ass because you didn’t read Skai’s comment properly (and I can tell you didn’t read my post properly either) and not only repeated what he said, but you then preceded to insult him afterward.
Moral of the story: Read clearly before you post.
I’m happy to see Sonic back in this game (and with an awesome new character model to boot).
BRING ON SHADOW, SEGA AND NINTENDO!
No, seriously, Shadow needs to be included in this game. There are so many fan hacks of him in Brawl it’s essentially a no-brainer. If not, hopefully he’ll reappear as an Assist Trophy like the last game.
No. Please no. For the love of all that is good, just no. NO.
@Chaotic Fox And why not?
I could see him as an assist trophy or a cameo but no a playable character.
Now Bayonetta please and I will forever be in ecstasy <3
(She /was/ part of the leak back in May too :3)
I hope their will be a story mode for this game! Maybe this time they can give Sonic a bigger part
@Mattrex45
You didn’t know!? Shadow the Hedgehog is ChaoticFox’s ALL TIME favorite character in any form of media EVAR!!
@ChaoticFox: Yeah… I was hoping for a redone move pool, maybe swap out some moves with his techniques in Battle, or use Elemental Shields, anything. Hell, Sakurai could’ve ripped Sonic’s skill set from Project M, and I would’ve been happy. But if we can’t have that, then Sonic needs buffing.
@Mattrex: CF just doesn’t like Shadow. 😛 Though, I agree that I’d rather not have him as a second series rep. Shadow has more than enough of a presence in the series as it is, and the last thing we need for Smash 4 is essentially a clone of Sonic. In all honesty, if we were to have a second character, I’d go with either Tails or Knuckles, preferably Tails, since you can do more with them seeing as they’ve got a bunch of skills throughout the history of the series.
Also, hey ChaoticFox… what’d you think of the music in that trailer, huh? Pretty funky tune, eh? 😛
You mean the Sonic Heroes theme? Or did you mean the new Lost World trailer?
Heroes theme.
I dig. Anything but Live and Learn, lol!
@Amuro Oh, alright. FYI I’m new here. Still, I think another Sonic character should be added to the roster.
Also, this trailer feels rather underwhelming compared to one for Sonic’s debut in Brawl.
sakurai stated that all movesets shown for new characters are not final, they’re simply porting the characters from brawl, and tweaking them later on once theyre done with getting all the characters they want to bring back
This is great and all but…
WHERE ARE THE NEWCOMERS??!!!
Rant over
We have three already. The others will be revealed in due time, chill.
Shadow is not a playable character in this game and neither will Bayonetta be
I’m hoping Tails appears as an assist trophy instead of Shadow this time. He’s much more deserving of it than Shadow. He could stand in the background of the stage and use his Lost World gadgets to help the player, or he could be a badass and tail whip some enemies, or he could use the tornado to shoot and fly into enemies, OR… Well you get the idea. Needless to say, I’m very glad Sonic’s back!
