Sonic Movie Debuts at #1 On iTunes, Amazon Prime
The Sonic movie had another number one debut when it topped the digital release charts on two major distribution platforms last week.
According to IndieWire, the film held the number one sales spot on release day, March 31st, and the day after, April 1st, on both Amazon Prime and iTunes, among the top digital distribution outlets in the world. On a third platform, FandangoNOW, it ranked second in sales, behind the new Bad Boys movie, which also saw release in the same week.
How that translates into hard sales figures is unknown at the moment, as digital revenue is more difficult to track than traditional box office dollars.
Before theaters around the world were closed in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Sonic movie earned over $306 million. A home release, originally intended for May, had been accelerated as part of movie studios’ response to the pandemic. The physical copy of the Sonic movie is still slated for release then.
