“Sonic Classic Collection” rated by BBFC
Retro game compilations are Sega’s bread and butter, these days. It began with Sonic Compilation on the Sega Genesis, Sonic Jam (pictured to your left) on the Sega Saturn, Jam Pak for the PC and Dreamcast, Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Mega Collection+, Sonic Gems Collection, Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, nevermind the individual re-releases on the Gameboy Advance, iPhone, Virtual Console, Xbox Live arcade, and PlayStation Network. If, for some reason, you don’t already own the classic Sonic games, get ready for another chance – the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has given a rating to something called “Sonic Classic Collection”.
Back in September, we reported on a leaked Sega memo referencing the potential existence of a new Sonic collection, purported to be exclusive to the PlayStation 3 – a “Best of Sonic”, containing “all of the old Sonic games” on a single Blu-ray for the steep asking price of nearly $100. It is unclear if this is the collection they were referencing to, but considering the BBFC conveniently lists everything present in this collection, putting all of this on to a Blu-ray disc seems like a waste of space:
n/a SONIC CLASSIC COLLECTION
n/a SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (GAME)
n/a SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 (GAME)
n/a SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 (GAME)
n/a SONIC & KNUCKLES (GAME)
n/a KNUCKLES IN SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 (GAME)
n/a KNUCKLES IN SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 (GAME)

In my own, personal opinion, given the low-game count and the presence of a trailer for Sonic Chronicles (but no trailers for any other individual games), I would not be surprised to see this instead announced for the Nintendo DS – a portable Sonic collection would make a whole lot more sense than re-re-releasing the classic Sonic games on a console yet again.
We’ll probably get an official announcement within the coming week – stay tuned.
Hmm… The presence of the Sonic Chronicles trailer highly suggests this will be on the DS.
If it is on DS then SEGA is very clever. By reintroducing classic Sonic to the mass market of the Nintendo DS, one could say that when Project Needlemouse comes out (if it is a true retro title as the trailer suggests), it will sell much better than if it came right after Unleashed, a more adventure-styled Sonic.
Anyone else agree with my super sonic hypothesis?
@Sonikku Master: What? You didn’t write anything about Super Sonic…. 🙁
I didn’t mean Super Sonic the character. Before Sonic 2 they used to call Sonic ‘Super’ Sonic.
Also if you read the instruction manuals you’ll know that they call him a super sonic hedgehog.
@Sonikku Master: Haha! Like Super Mario? 😀
If it does come to DS, I’ll definitely get it.
No Blue Sphere?
No Sonic CD?
No Knuckles’ Chaotix?
Sega, you have failed me once again. Why do they keep on making such collections?
This looks like the Wii owners version of Project Needlemouse to me LMAO
its totally a dick move that SEGA would pull.
Blueballs, Blue Sphere was on Mega Collection +, while Sonic CD was on Gems Collection. Do we really need another re-release of them?
Do we really need a re-release of the main Mega Drive games, though?
@Werehog: Yeah, kinda =D
They should put Knuckles Chaotix in a collection, they’ve never done it before. That’s why they should have it in a new collection. It’s easy to get for an emu. But there is other people out there who dosen’t even heard the word “Emulator/Emu” before. So it’s good for them. But IMO they should stop making these stupid colletions.
@Epiccenter712
Don’t forget about Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days. If that was accomplished on a DS cart, then they shoud easily be able to put more games on there.
Or they could release other games like Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix on the Dsiware.
Hey! Wouldn’t it be cool if this S Chronicles trailer would be for the 2nd one. Because they did cofirm BEFORE release that they were writing a 2nd game. It would be pointless to show a trailer of a game already out. DUH!
Ugh, NO MORE MEGA DRIVE RE-RELEASES ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!! Why not port Sonic CD & Knuckles’ Chaotix on the Virtual Console, and/or even better, add SATURN and DREAMCAST games on the PSN.
A Sonic DS Compilation that contains absolute win titles?
I better find that little prick that stole my DS and get back to looking forward to games, starting with this one. Now all it’s missing is Sonic CD. Get that on there, and I will certainly have a fit, getting over to my local game store and purchasing this work.
And since when was it Knuckles in Sonic 3? I thought it was Sonic 3 & Knuckles which is practically two games combined. And why not make Knuckles a selectable character in Sonic 2 by himself instead of putting another separate title in there that is practically the same game? Make space for another great title, SEGA. CoughSonicCDcough.
Classic Sonic on DS?
Fuck yes.
The Sonic CD BIN/ISO would easily fit but they would have to compress the external music I would assume. (Doesn’t it depend on how large the internal micro SD card is?)
Sonic CD would not fit on a DS cartridge unless they heavily compressed the digital music (or replaced the soundtrack entirely). Largest DS cartridges available now hold about 128 megabytes of data. With the music in MP3 format, Sonic CD comes out to about 180mb. Even heavily compressed, Sonic CD would be better suited to it’s own separate cartridge as there’s no way it could fit along side of four other games.
@ Ryan Bloom
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days is 256mb
What now?
Where’s CD?
@Mike:
Hm. Well, I assume the 256mb cartridges are expensive, considering you don’t see them very often. Collections are intended to be cheap ways to make a profit, so that still plants it firmly in the realm of “unlikely”.
@Ryan, just a small correction, the largest card for the DS holds(will hold) 4gb(512MB) data thanks to the upcoming Level -5/Studio Ghibli game The Another World. You are right that Sega wouldn’t bother using the more expensive cards, though for a collection.
Anyway, hurrah for yet another unnecessary collection, but this time it’s for that critical 1% who still haven’t played a Sonic game! :p 10 bucks say this will be a lousy port job courtesy of Backbone!
I wonder how they would look on the DS. Each screen size is smaller than that of an NES!
I think a handheld Sonic collection would be a good idea plus I`m tired of seeing the classic sonics on consoles I love to see classic sonic games on DS especially Sonic CD it would work as a DS game & the art gallery would be a great thing to see on DS since you can`t put your own images from your computer the DSi
If it’s for the DS I’ll get it, but if it’s for the console I’ll only get it if it has Chaotix and or Sonic World (Sonic Jam) missions.
Would’nt it be awsome if they remade Sonics 1-3 and CD with CG CUTSCENES!!!100% non-voice acted with the smae classic gameplay, bosses, and zones.
An example would be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfm1TUCsqFA
Show of hands to who would want this.
If this was on DS, I’d buy it in a second!
@ edwin shy
no the only pictures you can get on DSi are those from the camera. The PSP does what your thinking of(and you can buy a camera for it.).
I like how everyone lists off the collections and forgets to mention Sonic & Knuckles Collection for the PC which had sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Knuckles in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles(sonic 3 complete edition, whatever you want to call it.)
Well all ranting aside. This will be an instant buy for me if its on PSP. Because really, Sega’s whored themselves out to the Nintendo DS for way too long. They can put Tennis and Racing on the DS but what? not on PSP? arent both games on PS2? and doesnt the PSP have the same power of the PS2? but seriously. I hope its on PSP. I mean, Sega could put it on both…
And I think that this is an incomplete list. Because, seriously…. this is NOT enough for a collection on a console by todays standards.
@ edwin shy
Sorry I thought your comment said “since can’t you put images from your computer on DSi”
Where is everyone getting the idea that this is coming out for DS?
Still, I love classic compiliations, so I’ll consider this.
@Kits’Okami: It’s the dark brotherhood you know. 😉
While I do feel that another collection is getting to be a little too much, if this IS for the portable systems, mainly the DS, then I can see myself getting it. I’ve always wanted to play Genesis Sonic games on the go.
For 100 bucks? No.
Yeah, $100 would be a bit much for a compilation, especially when Gems Collection, was like, $30.
meh..totally not worth it
I doubt this is coming to anything but the DS. There’s no way the features list would be so bare and then have a trailer for Chronicles if it came out for any other console.
@ edge: Sega Genesis Collection.
Does anyone have a feeling that this could be “project needlemouse”. I know it sounds weird but it could just be a sonic collection game in hd. But what in the trailer they say a new story in the first few seconds of the trailer.
Proj needlemouse wasnt even in the leak in sony and sega doc
edge : Yes, I wish the DSi could show images like the PSP can but oh well but I argee with you that their should of been PSP versions of Tennis & Racing but maybe next Sega Superstars Game we`ll see a PSP version…
If they do make a collection for the PS3 it better have the Adventure games. There’s no excuse.
Sonicman: What? Im pretty sure this isnt. You also forget the Speed returns part.
Oh and the rest of it: in an all new game built from the ground up.
True. Thanks to remind me that.
But dont you think its weird that they didn’t show any info about proj needlemouse except that trailer that revealed the existence of the game ironically the same day SA was released and Dreamcast came out.
And they accidently reveal info on sonic classic collection on that sega sony doc, and nothing on proj needlemouse in the doc?
If this was on DS it would be super special amazing.
HOWEVER, BBFC doesn’t have the rights to rate games anymore. Doesn’t anyone else think that’s a bit iffy? :/
please put comics sega on the game like sonic universe and sonic the hedgehog.
@TheOGB
Sega Genesis Collection had Sonic 1 and 2.
Look at how many Sonic games were on the DS
Mario and Sonic 1(technically a mario game and a sonic game)
Mario and Sonic 2(technically a mario game and a sonic game)
Sonic Rush
Sonic Rush Adventure
Sonic Chronicles
Sega Superstars Tennis
Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing
lets look at the PSP sonic games
Sonic Rivals
Sonic Rivals 2…
2 games.
and no one give me that crap that “the superstars series is a sega game NOT A SONIC GAME” Look at how many sonic characters there are compared to other Sega characters. I dont see how the heck(thats right. I said heck) thats NOT a sonic game. Just look at smash bros. there are an even number of mario, zelda, pokemon and almost starfox. then theres also usually several characters from other series. theres only a few series that have only one representative character. thats why I can safetly call SSB a NINTENDO GAME and not a mario game. Sega just takes a ton of sonic characters, throws in one character from like 5 or 6 other sega games and labels it a sega game.
Sega Genesis collection IS a sega game because they have 2 Sonic games, 2 vectorman games, 2 Shinobi games, 3 phantasy star games, 3 Ecco games, 3 golden axe games and 18 other games
Well all ranting aside
OFLC confirms it’s for DS.
