Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Revealed
So much for noon–within the past few minutes, IGN has gone live with its first reveal of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
We have video of the reveal below. The more than three minute clip includes CG, in-game footage, and interviews with Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett and Gareth Wilson. You’ll note that Sonic and his transforming vehicle are the focus of the footage. We do know from the clip that BD Joe and Beat are coming back, as are Tails, Knuckles and Eggman among others. We also know from the clip that a Panzer Dragoon level will be included, as will one from Super Monkey Ball. We have the former corroborated along with word that Vyse from Skies of Arcadia is included, along with Gillius from Golden Axe, plus some new details which we’ll be sharing shortly. You should, of course, also expect a variety of Sonic levels in-game. Richard Jacques will be remixing classic Sega music for the game.
While this all may look a lot like Mario Kart 7 or Diddy Kong Racing, IGN’s Chris Schilling says there is a big difference:
In fact Transformed has the edge in one very obvious regard. In Mario Kart 7, plunging beneath the waves made little meaningful difference to how the game played; this was merely a cosmetic change. Similarly, gliding, while more involved than underwater racing, wasn’t so much about flying as falling with style. Hit the water here, however, and you’ll immediately notice tweaks to the handling – it’s closer to something like Hydro Thunder Hurricane than a land-based arcade racer. And on the occasions you zoom above the track, there’s a fully-fledged flight model, as you guide your now-winged vehicle through floating boost gates. Better still, there’s a brief pause and satisfying mechanical whirrs and clunks as your kart morphs into its new form, in a manner reminiscent of a certain Hasbro toy franchise. Robotniks in disguise, anyone?
