SEGA To Focus On PC & Mobile Gaming
For 14 years, SEGA has been producing software as a third-party developer for Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft’s home consoles. They’ve had ups and downs. However it looks like the torch just got more dim.
With the developing news of SEGA’s restructuring currently unfolding suspicions have arisen that this may be related to a story we previously reported on in November that suggested that they would turn their focus to PC and mobile gaming. Now, with news reinforced by MCV UK, we can now say with certainty that this will be the case.
Although the site is off in saying that 300 jobs from SEGA are being cut (120 are in SEGA’s division and the other 180 are in SEGA Sammy’s other divisions) MCV reports that the restructure is indeed the start of SEGA’s plans to move over to PC and mobile gaming and sourced this quote from SEGA Sammy’s statement as evidence: “Local organisations managing packaged game software in Western markets will be streamlined.”
A door has been closed.

Sega Corporation,Inc is finally history.
Sega Networks,Corporation,Inc and Sega Entertainment Corporation,Ltd are its successors.
So in other words they won’t be making games for the consoles anymore… Well with the rating for the Sonic games going downhill and fast I’m not surprised by this.
You don’t even realize how much of a good thing this is.
God… damn it.
…Maybe by streamlining, they mean they’ll release just one or two games?… No…?
God damn it.
Whoever gets Sega properties when they eventually die or sell them off, please, TREAT THEM WITH RESPECT! AND KNOW WHAT THE FUCK YOU ARE DOING!! And yes, I’m talking to you, Nintendo!
…God damn it.
Nintendo doesn’t have $32 billion dollars.
Sorry but Id rather see sega property be handed off to someone else than shitendo.
exactly^
why not Nintendo? do you really see Playstation n Xbox fan treating Sonic right?
Not really any company would be a good fit. Sure, Sega has lost touch with the Sonic brand for about a decade but consider if one of these companies grabbed Sega…
Disney = no darker, Adventure-style games ever again; could even reduce the games to a scope like Star Wars where it’s just Angry Birds and Battlefront and kill off Sonic Team like they did to LucasArts
Microsoft = Rare, shelved and games delayed indefinitely
Sony = Playstation exclusives… boo!
Nintendo = childish themes like Sonic Lost World and generic, cookie cut levels
LOL @ “childish” themes. You do know Sonic is intended to played by children right?
Yes, but not to the point of being humiliating to the intelligence of even children. Children don’t like stupid stuff any more than any of us do. Juvenile but not infantile games, please!
Yes because Nintendo has never made more serious games. All their games are childish.
I guess Zelda, Star Fox, and Metroid don’t exist.
And hell, even Mario games can get dark. Ever play Luigi’s Mansion, or the Paper Mario series?
A;ways cracks me up when people call Nintendo childish. They’re creative and fun and make games kids and adults both enjoy. They would do Sonic justice tbh.
Does this mean Sonic will be PC only now…?
Here’s some Sonic music.
WUT
…
Everyone has a PC but not everyone a PS4, Xbox One or else so its a good thing
Wait, what the hell? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG?
While I’ll be happy to see more Sonic games on the PC as well as mobile devices, I’ll also be sad if Sega stops making console games altogether. I really wanted to see Sonic on the PS4 and Xbox One!
Sega better make a Sonic game for PS4/X1 cause if they don’t I’m going to do something I’m going to regret.
*Sees PC games will become a main focus*
Yay! Now for some Sonic on PC.
But the other news makes me sad about what the employees had to go through. Hopefully, cleaning up shop with this restructuring will improve things vastly for their employee environment.
Oh my God.
Man, I just hope some things will be compatible with Mac users too 🙁
Me too! Here’s hoping.
CRAP. OF COURSE, SINCE I’VE GOT A MAC.
Well, I can’t say that I’m surprised. If anything, I’m surprised everyone else is surprised.
People, Sonic has been irrelevant for the longest time. There are barely more than 3 million people supporting his games today (Generations is the peak in recent years, selling around 3 million or so) and his last couple of games (Lost World, Sonic Boom, Olympic Games) have all sold incredibly poorly.
But don’t blame the fans for not supporting these games. Blame Sega (and BRB) for throwing mediocre to horrendous games at us and expecting us to be happy and cheerful and pay full price. This is their own fault. Had they continued with the route of Generations, or hell, had they given us Sonic Adventure 3, this wouldn’t have happened. Instead they gave us Lost World right after Generations, which no one ever asked for, and Boom, which no one ever asked for because they wanted “to please kids”.
Well, Sega, the kids ain’t pleased and neither are we fans. Now you have barely anything left.
………..It’s over……..It’s the end.
*Clap* *Clap* Well done, SoA. Well done, Iizuka. Well done, Frost. Well done, pro-comedy/nostalgia branch of the fanbase.
You managed to do what Sonic ’06 DID NOT DO, but Boom achieved to do : You KILLED SONIC. ENTIRELY.
“Focusing on PC and mobile gaming”…….A.k.a. : more shitty F2P app games like Dash, Jump and soon Runners. Say hello to a probable Skylander-like game.
This is the result of pandering to Nostalgia elitists, to pro-comedy White Knights, to “ITZ 4 TEH KIDZ” apologists, to the “professional reviewers”.
5 years based around all of these whiny minorances, who are ONLY on the Web, and flipping the bird to sensible fans.
And Boom is the final result of all of this pandering….Thanks to your half-assed PR management and even more dumb-fucking business choices.
Declining sales, declining popularity outside of the fanbase.
But then again, this is more about SoA. While Sonic belongs to Sonic Team, which is under SoJ at the moment. But these are horrible news indeed.
All I can say is : Be careful what you wish for. And, you can either die as a hero, live long enough to become the villain.
Fuck………..Now I need a confirmation from Iizuka. Or just a drink.
I believe turning to the PC and mobile market is a smart move because of the mass availability of PCs and mobile devices. Everyone owns a PC in some form, either a tablet, 2-in-1, laptop, desktop or Steam machine and everyone has at least one mobile device, principally smartphones with either Android or iOS. For example, a modern Wintel laptop has 1.5 to 2 times the graphics throughout of an Xbox 360 (Intel HD 4400, Intel Iris).
For me, it is kind of a dream come true, leading to this question I hope will be answered with a resounding “yes!” in the end: Do you think that the next main series Sonic game will have a direct or day one release on PC? I have been waiting for this sort of thing for years. I mean, if Sega plays their cards right, they could get a good portion of the pie, financially speaking anyway, especially with services such as Steam being as popular they are:

Updated with facts and figures:
I believe turning to the PC and mobile market is an extremely smart move because of the mass availability of PCs and mobile devices. Everyone owns a PC (1 billion PCs actively in use worldwide) in some form, either a tablet, 2-in-1, laptop, desktop or Steam machine and everyone has at least one mobile device, principally smartphones with either Android (over 1 billion Android devices worldwide) or iOS (800 million shipped iOS devices). For the unbelievers, just to go to show PC gaming isn’t all that bad, a modern entry-level Wintel laptop has 1.5 to 2 times the graphics throughout of an Xbox 360 (Intel HD 4400 or Intel Iris, respectively).
For me, it is kind of a dream come true, leading to this question I hope will be answered with a resounding “yes!” in the end: Will the next main series Sonic game have a direct or day one release on PC? I have been waiting for this sort of thing for years, and I do mean years. Ultimately, if Sega plays their cards right, they could get a good portion of the pie, financially speaking anyway, especially with services such as Steam being as wildly popular as they are:

Yes.
One of the main reasons Why Sega is shifting heavily towards PC is because majority of its old hardware fanbase has migrated to PC.
hahahahahahahhaha
… … … …
Oh boy…is this what my complaint gets me? Wasn’t expecting this or all that other news this fast. 😛
I’m with Ash, why would anyone surprised? You’d have to be completely ignorant to think that Sonic was still relevant and successful. While Sonic’s irrelevancy doesn’t make me happy, it’s quite amusing to see more and more confirmation that the “hateful bile” spat by 100Rings, Danidado and many more isn’t as delusional as others try to make it.
One of them even seems happy about it.
Happy that they’ll drop this failing direction and break through the delusions other’s have kept about it being successful most likely. I’d feel the same.
They have no one but themselves to blame for this catastrophe. They made this mess, so they need to get themselves out of it. Maybe if quit putting out shit Sonic games and neglecting their other franchises, they wouldn’t be in this situation. If It does come to Sega IP being sold off though, Nintendo would be nice fit for Sonic, Super Monkey Ball, and Bayonetta, no clue where any other franchise would go to though. Sonic would finally be in the hands of actually competant developers, that don’t rush out games. Fanboys can get angry at that suggestion all they want. Also, LMAO @ the “Sonic is supposed to be dark!” people, always whining about something as irrelevant as Sonic’s always mediocre story.
“Also, LMAO @ the “Sonic is supposed to be dark!” people, always whining about something as irrelevant as Sonic’s always mediocre story.”
Because why listen to the demands of fans, right? Sonic’s story is a problem, but an even larger problem is the lack of appeal in general. The stories of the recent games are childish,, but so is the entire image of those games. The cool, badass action packed appeal of the games has been replaced by wackiness nearly completely and it’s been proven that kids aren’t buying that crap.
“Nintendo would be nice fit for Sonic”
And with the information stated above, shipping Sonic off to Nintendo is a terrible idea. Oh but I seem to be forgetting that “gameplay matters most” and that appeal/story have no baring on anything aren’t I? LOL
Do you think kids or most people are buying Sonic for story? Pfthahaha you people crack me the fuck. Kids aren’t buying Sonic because he is no longer relevant, his games are shit and a whole other mess of problems that Sega themselves caused. And gameplay doesn’t matter most? LMAOOOOO. Yes it does, objectively and factually. Are you telling me a story about a cartoon blue hedgehog should take precedence over the actual gameplay and quality? Get out of here with that shit. You do know Sonic always has and always will be, marketed to children, do you not? Whether you like it or not, that is his main audience, and that hasn’t changed since the very beginning of the franchise. You can keep whining all you want about Sonic being (“kiddy” LOL you Sonic fanboys) I’d rather Sonic be with an actual quality developer such as Nintendo or Sony rather than fuckups who don’t know how to dobanything other mediocrity like Sonic Team. Want your “dark and edgy” storylines? Go play Sonic 06 or Rise of Lyric. Those seem right up your alley.
Do honestly think kids or people are buying Sonic for story? Pfthahaha. Kids aren’t buying Sonic because he is no longer relevant, his games are shit and a whole other mess of problems that Sega caused. And gameplay doesn’t matter most? Yes it does, objectively and factually. Are you telling me a story about a cartoon blue hedgehog should take precedence over the actual gameplay and quality? Get out of here with that shit. Want your “dark and edgy” storylines? Go play Sonic 06 or Rise of Lyric. Those seem right up your alley. Sonic is a laughing stock for a reason.
“Do honestly think kids or people are buying Sonic for story?”
Did you completely ignore what I said about being cool and appealing?
Kids aren’t buying Sonic because his games look lame. You think kids care about that much gameplay mechanics? Colors gameplay wasn’t broken and it sold poorly, Lost World’s gameplay wasn’t broken either and it didn’t even make 1 million. How wouldd people even get to experience the gameplay if they weren’t interested enough in the game to pick it up? Relevant video game icons don’t sell this terribly man.
“Are you telling me a story about a cartoon blue hedgehog should take precedence over the actual gameplay and quality?”
No, it should receive as much care and quality as everything else in the game. Where do people like you get the idea I ‘d like terrible gameplay and great story over great gameplay and great story? Sonic’s music has always been great, but when the gameplay’s bad you don’t see people saying “Less focus on music, we need to perfect gameplay!”.
Also that blue hedgehog argument is invalid, so you can stop trying to reiterate what every other Sonic reviewer on the internet said. Ratchet and Clank games, they tell great stories, with the right balance in tone, good writing, and they’re about a talking space cat and his tiny robot. Lion King’s story is about talking lions and yet there’s still effort put into the story,
I could go on and on, but the point is that this argument is just another desperate attempt to eliminate story when it’s not even a problem. Other games can pull of a great story just fine, Sonic being a blue hedgehog shouldn’t be an excuse for laziness in writing.
“You do know Sonic always has and always will be, marketed to children, do you not? ”
Sonic was never marketed to only children, like he is now. Remember back then Sonic was cool and badass, that was the intended appeal of his games and it appealed to everyone, not just little kids, and now, he’s abandoned that cool image to run around fighting wacky nickelodeon rejects and like I’ve stated before, sales (read: interest and demand) have plummeted. This kids only approach only started in 2010 with Colors and wouldn’t you know? That’s just when the decline started. If being “LOLOL KIDDY!!” is so great, why aren’t copies being moved?
“go play Sonic 06 or Rise of Lyric.”
LOL RoL isn’t dark/edgy, what are you talking about? Well, you can continue to whine about how Sonic shouldn’t have an interesting plot alongside good gameplay all you like, I and many others will continue to ask for quality in all aspects of a game.
Maybe one day, you’ll realize that Sonic’s current state of irrelevancy is largely to blame for listening to nearly every excuse you churned out. “Blue hedgehog! He was always for kids! Gameplay matters and everything else can be shit!” The people saying this got what they wanted and in return, this is the outcome.
“Did you completely ignore what I said about being cool and appealing?
Kids aren’t buying Sonic because his games look lame.”
Do you have actual marketing statistics or evidence or anything of any worth to prove this statement? Oh, what’s that? You don’t? Okay. Moving on.
“You think kids care about that much gameplay mechanics? Colors gameplay wasn’t broken and it sold poorly, Lost World’s gameplay wasn’t broken either and it didn’t even make 1 million. How wouldd people even get to experience the gameplay if they weren’t interested enough in the game to pick it up? Relevant video game icons don’t sell this terribly man.”
Lies and absolute nonsense. Sonic Colors had sold well over 2 million copies by march of 2011, Generations was a million seller as well. If you’re going to come on here with a counterargument, you better have some actual accurate facts to back your whining up with.
“No, it should receive as much care and quality as everything else in the game. Where do people like you get the idea I ‘d like terrible gameplay and great story over great gameplay and great story? Sonic’s music has always been great, but when the gameplay’s bad you don’t see people saying “Less focus on music, we need to perfect gameplay!”.
Not of that opinion, sorry to upset you. I’m of the mindset great, well done, POLISHED gameplay should come before everything else. Want a compelling story, nice graphics and all that jazz? Fine, those are definitely great things to have but I want something that’s actually polished and fun to play before all that.
“Also that blue hedgehog argument is invalid, so you can stop trying to reiterate what every other Sonic reviewer on the internet said.”
Lol. I love when people go “YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID BECAUSE I SAY SO!!!”
Nah, I’ll keep using that argument, thank you very much. I don’t give a rat’s ass if it upsets you as it obviously does.
Sonic is an incredibly silly premise, when all’s said and done.
“Ratchet and Clank games, they tell great stories, with the right balance in tone, good writing, and they’re about a talking space cat and his tiny robot. Lion King’s story is about talking lions and yet there’s still effort put into the story”
Same as above. Great franchises though. Bringing up other works in order to somehow “validate” your whining is hilarious though.
“I could go on and on, but the point is that this argument is just another desperate attempt to eliminate story when it’s not even a problem. Other games can pull of a great story just fine, Sonic being a blue hedgehog shouldn’t be an excuse for laziness in writing.”
Lol. Sonic fans, always with the false accusations. I don’t care about story in Sonic at all. I’m not attempting to defend Sega or Sonic Team for that matter. I just wanna go fast in well designed levels with decent controls that don’t make me wanna drown puppies.
“Sonic was never marketed to only children, like he is now. If being “LOLOL KIDDY!!” is so great, why aren’t copies being moved?”
Sonic is marketed only toward children you say? Hmm. That’s funny. I recall a certain retro throwback that was made for classic fans, wait two actually. Hmm ever heard of Sonic The Hedgehog 4 or Sonic Generations? And would you look at that, they were in that same decline era you mentione, and they both sold very well.
“go play Sonic 06 or Rise of Lyric.”
“LOL RoL isn’t dark/edgy, what are you talking about? Well, you can continue to whine about how Sonic shouldn’t have an interesting plot alongside good gameplay all you like, I and many others will continue to ask for quality in all aspects of a game.”
LOL i love how you left out Sonic 06 because you know its true. ROL was trying to be dark but it utterly failed in that regard. Again with these hilariously pathetic accusations. I’m asking for quality above all, but I want quality in every aspect of a game. Take your nonsensical fanboy bitchfit elsewhere.
Maybe one day, you’ll realize that Sonic’s current state of irrelevancy is largely to blame for listening to nearly every excuse you churned out.
What’s that sound I hear? Sounded like…hmm fanboy bitching, with no evidence or marketing research to boot.
“Blue hedgehog! He was always for kids! Gameplay matters and everything else can be shit!” The people saying this got what they wanted and in return, this is the outcome.”
Trying to simplify someone’s argument into something else entirely. Classic fanboy spin. Something something Sonic fan base is a laughing stock, etc.
Continue to whine with your vocal minority. Nothing makes me happier than seeing Sonic fanboys bitch and moan about everything.
Hey pal, remember when you said Sonic games are marketed for kids? Hate to break to you, but kids don’t give a shit about “Good, polished gameplay.”. That’s why so many kids are buying Fifa and CoD nowadays. Story is important for the same reason music and graphics are important. They’re the flashy overcoat that helps sell the game while the gameplay acts as the under engine. People like Sonic for his universe. They like him for his personality. Story intertwines both of these.
Believe it or not, tons of people really like Sonic for his story. Don’t believe me? Visit a fanfiction site, or take a look at the comics.
Well, fuck.
There goes most every chance of me playing whatever Sonic games come out next on PC.
Sure, most everyone has a computer, but not everyone has them gaming accesible. Heck, my laptop can BARELY play Generations on the standard settings, and I don’t have any iOS devices since I really don’t care for them.
Guess that’s it then. I sure as hell don’t know how PC gaming works and I doubt my laptop can handle anything they put out anyway. I doubt its hit me fully yet.
“Sonic is suppose to be dark! ”
“Sonic is suppose to be for kids!”
How about sonic be good for once and stop pandering to the minority extremist that say this all the time. These fans just straight out sucks, Good ridden.
Notice how little anyone says “Sonic’s supposed to be dark only!”. The people screaming Sonic is for kids (which they literally say) often generalize other people’s views and desires like this.
Sux it,
It always fans like you that always think they know what everyone want and act all superior. When sonic dies I pray these fans don’t follow where ever my internet travels take me.
I’m acting superior by looking at the heavily declining sales of the games and coming to the conclusion that not enough people are buying them? Sorry, I’m not going to “sux it” for looking at factual numbers.
Sonic is intended for children, but many demographics play them. Well, they used to anyway.

This, ladies and gentleman, is what the Sonic Colors era has led to. Childish stories, dumbed down stories, and a lack of appealing content has caused Sega to nearly crash and burn. Is anyone going to defend the “Comedy” direction of the series now? How can anyone possibly defend it at this point? You can’t. Sure some may prefer it, but now it has PROVEN to have nearly destroyed not only Sonic, but Sega as a whole.
This article on the Sonic Adventure 3 Facebook page (which is NOT my page) spells it out very clearly:
“The Colors era is OVER Guys! did you expect Boom’s extreme failure to go unpunished? Hell no! Here’s what I think. After SLW’s failure SoA probably made the bet that Sonic would be successful if West developers were in charge of the franchise. Sonic Boom was an ultimatum project for SoA and their vision of Sonic failed miserably. All that comedy BS was actually SoA’s contribution. SoJ actually hated SoA’s comedy; they rewrote SLW’s dialogues almost entirely! SoA, the way they are now, had nothing to do with the old SoA. Most of the deciding heads didn’t know anything about Sonic! Their PRs didn’t know their own mascot’s lore. There’s even a video of Sonic Generation with a guy from SoA giving commentary, having no clue what the GUN truck was! Am I sad for SoA? TBH, not really! SoJ now has to deal with their sick love for Nintendo-cute things and after that we can start to talk about recovery!”

Now remember guys, Sonic still has a movie in the making, and I’m sure Sega will want a console game to be released alongside it. Its not over yet. Well, it IS over for Sonic Colors/Boom style comedy!
The fact that you think story is the reason why Sonic dwindle is funny. No one gives a damn about story in Sonic game other than deluded Adventure fanboys.
Its not just about story. The content as a whole is unappealing to both longtime fans and the mainstream audience. That includes story, tone, and the general look and feel of the game.
“No one gives a damn about story in Sonic game other than deluded Adventure fanboys.”
All the evidence says otherwise:
-Since the stories of the games have been stripped down, the games have been selling less with every iteration. Generations sold well, but could have, and should have done better. Lost World flopped. Boom had a story that was all over the place, and we saw how that turned out.
-The Archie Sonic comic has lasted over 20 years and is still going. What does a comic rely on? Characters and story.
-Chances are, the Sonic movie will likely do decent business when it hits theaters. What will the movie rely on? Action, characters, and…you guessed it…story.
Story is more important to Sonic than you might think. The stories of the Adventure series drew people in to its universe, and hooked players in to continue following the series. Even if you personally don’t care for stories in Sonic games, I hope you can at least see how they might appeal to some people.
“The stories of the Adventure series drew people in to its universe, and hooked players in to continue following the series.”
Case in point, Adventure fanboys.
@AfroWarrior,
“Case in point, Adventure fanboys.”
…Is that seriously the best response you could come up with? Geez, no wonder everyone hates this fanbase so much…
I find it ever interesting that people get upset over others wanting a good story in Sonic. Asking for good gameplay’s completely fine, but story’s just poisonous for whatever reason. But whatever, it’s not like anyone can ever make up a half decent excuse as to why stories shouldn’t matter.
Because in the end of the day story isn’t something that will help the series, no one truly cares about story when it comes to Sonic. And it’s not like writing was a selling point to Sonic anyways.
@Gnat1
Is that the best you can come up with to my response? What I said is true, and if it wasn’t you didn’t do a single thing to invalidate it.
Calling the fan base horrible is just crutch you’re using because you lack any valid points.
@AfroWarrior,
Liking the Adventure games for their story doesn’t make someone a “deluded Adventure fanboy”, it just means they like the story. Nothing more. There are definitely Adventure fanboys out there, but I wouldn’t be so quick as to slap the fanboy tag on them just for liking Adventure’s story aspects. While Sonic might not need it as much as other game characters, a game’s story still posseses some importance when it comes to the overall outcome of the game. You may not fully believe it, but there’s plenty of people out there who like the stories in Sonic games, even if they’re complete crap.
don’t wory SONY will take care of that franchise, they might put him the next game

Just as clarification to everyone here wondering about the Stephen Frost petition:
https://www.change.org/p/sega-keep-stephen-frost-at-sega-of-america
We are making a statement here: we, as their own customers, care for their own employees more than SEGA themselves. That is just to openly go out and prove how very insensitive and out of touch (the non-politically correct term others would use is “evil”) of a corporation SEGA truly is.
Yes, we are helping Steven Frost out which is the primary focus here, but the overall theme or lesson to be learned is that this should not be happening to begin with. To be quite frank, the more publicity and signatures this petition gets, the more greedy, racist and heartless we make SEGA out to be.
Accomplishing either goal is a win-win in my opinion. Besides, employees knowing we really do care for them in spite of their employer’s lack of competence makes those employees realize we are in it for more than a game alone–we value them and their hard work. In the end, we will earn their mutual friendship and trust as a result.
Oh shit.
OH SHIT.
Well, this is it guys. It’s been a swell last couple of years hanging out here with you all.
My inner child just died.
Is that the best you can come up with to my response? What I said is true, and if it wasn’t you didn’t do a single thing to invalidate it.
