SEGA Restructuring: The Community Reacts
This weekend was nothing short of a whirlwind of information about SEGA’s unfortunate restructuring plans. As you might expect, the fan community had much to say about the news, and we’ve curated a few of the more thought-provoking comments here for you.
On Sonic Retro, user Dissident didn’t seem very moved by the news:
It’s hard to feel sympathy for the company as a whole when they did this shit to themselves. I hope the good people that got fired land on their feet, at least.
Also on Sonic Retro, user The Kazeblade suggested that SEGA as a whole should just call it quits:
It’s time for Sega to go quiet into that dark night. With such little backing to really push their franchises into success, they just need to sell their IP off and disappear. Sega and Sammy make plenty of money from their pachinko and whatnot, so Sammy is getting next to nothing from keeping Sega around. Sell the IP, sell Atlas, maybe sell Sonic Team as well. Maybe someone else out there will actually make use of lapsed franchises like the Shining series, Gunstar Heroes, Vectorman, Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon, Billy Hatcher, freaking Phantasy Star… Sega has so many viable franchises that they just don’t have the financial or creative backing to put out that could be a gold mine in the right hands.
Over at SEGAbits, forum admin Barry the Nomad acknowledged that the seeds for such a move may have been planted long ago:
What I find odd is how people are surprised by this. I don’t mean that in a “hur hur SEGA sucks and this was coming”, but SEGA has made numerous promises for changes over the past few years – including focusing on fewer packaged releases and shifting focus to digital and PC. Also, SEGA of America’s move makes sense given Atlus USA is in SoCal and SEGA wants to create movies, tv, and animation from classic IPs. What’s in SoCal? Hollywood.
Also, it’s not like SEGA Sammy are stepping in and ruining something that was working. SEGA of America has had problems for a while now, and perhaps these changes are a good thing.
On Sega’s official forums, user Kintor was quick to remind others that SEGA’s ability to develop and release games may not be impacted as much as some feared it would:
Honestly, it looks like for the most part Sega’s crucial operations will be unaffected. Sega of Japan will be unaffected. While the Western development teams such as Creative Assembly, Hardlight Studio and Relic Entertainment all operate as semi-autonomous organisations anyway. With most of the ‘early retirements’ being focused on the North American head office. Ultimately, while this is a significant turn of events, Sega’s capacity to create and release games remains largely undiminished.
Here on TSSZ, user AM expressed dissatisfaction with the revelation that morale at SEGA of America was poor to say the least and showed concern for the future of the company:
I am not happy with the way Sega has been conducting its business; it seems like a toxic environment to work at (and I feel sorry for folks who are being let go over this), and there is very little control over quality. With that being said though, Sega has been constantly restructuring since the end of the Dreamcast, which creates a toxic environment of uncertainty for workers, and not to mention prevents them from reaching any long-term goals (since with every restructure that seems to change). I seriously hope they choose a well thought out model and stick with it. Unfortunately, however, knowing Sega’s recent history, I doubt this will happen.
Also here on TSSZ, user LogiTeeka saw some fan reaction to Stephen Frost’s departure and had some barbed words of their own:
Judging by all the rude comments, Frost’s gratitude towards the fans feels like such a waste. This fanbase sucks.
One question remains: what do you think? We’ve seen plenty of people sound off about all of SEGA’s recent developments over the past few days, but if you haven’t yet, now’s your chance. Do you agree or disagree with any of the above remarks? Feel free to react to these comments and add your own below.
Well, I’m lost. Just hoping that I can get the job I want-making my dream Sonic trilogy.
I just want more info about what Sonic’s up to next, including Runners. Whether the next game is good or not will really say something. In other words, I think we need to just let time go by in order to see the full effect of this.
It is the best doesn’t suit them continue losing money, Sonic games now are a risky bet. Also I feel that enrealidad your company was very disorganized hope are now smart.
Ya know I could easily change the mood of this news with a little flame bait. It like having a big red self destruct button in front of me.
Seriously need to categorize the general mood of the whole forum not one person. The Sega forums were depressed not optimistic.
I once sent SEGA an email, and I got a response after two monthes, and I’ll say this Ruger got back to me within minutes after I sent them an email, so what does that tell you?
They get a lot of emails?
True, but the same thing can be said for Ruger. Riiight?
As with many, I’d have to say I’m mostly concerned about where Sonic’s going now. Are we going to be gnawing the bones of Sonic Dash from here on out? Or are we going to see Generations-quality PC games? I’d love the latter to be the case, but it looks like Sega’s going small. Sega needs to get their crap together already, this has been one of the most depressing weeks for gaming in years. Prayers going out for all who lost their jobs.
hopefully this change will filter out some of those sucky troll Sonic fans who female dog about every little thing. There are a lot of great, delightful, wonderful Sonic fans, but the stupid ones ruin it. And those horrible un-creative fan characters make the whole community look like a bigger joke.
Makes me think about what Sonic Runners will be and how big it will be (levels, features, game modes etc) for a mobile game. Weren’t we supposed to hear more in January?
Something tells me Sonic Runners is just going to be a cash grab game. I don’t know why everyone thinks it’s the next big Sonic title.
Actually, I’m really happy because Some Horrible sega community managers are fired (YAY!!!!!!)
They ban someone without the reason like Space colony bark (of course I’m banned too without a reason.)
Plus, They ignores our contact. It means that they hates me because of personal things.
So. I’m really happy because Some Sega employee will be fired!
YAY!
Amazed no one has talked about the impressive work of people who those sprite shows starring sonic shadow silver and OCs
Final thoughts, huh? Well, so much for the series being saved with the Colors Era. It took Sonic “back to his roots” and “gave new hope for the franchise” and all that other bloated praise and this is where we’re at. Boom might have been the worst of it, but it’s not like this problem started with it.
Wow, you’re awfully negative. I thought Colors was great, so was Generations, hell even Unleashed ignoring the annoying Werehog levels.
Ohhhh, boohoo…….The negativity iz sooooo baaaaaad.
Well, I hated the hell out of Colors and Generations, to the point I nearly left Sonic. They were lazily made, excessively kiddy and just plain unappealing.
Unleashed has a good presentation, but it still lacks on many departments.
But in the end, no, nothing worthy came out of these 5-6 years of kiddyness and nostalgic rehash. And who cares if it’s your opinion ? If they really were that “great”, this Whole mess wouldn’t have happened in the first place.
And what does your opinion on the games quality have to do with how they didn’t save Sonic from irrelevancy? You liking it has nothing to do with if its successful or not.
While you make a valid point, I don’t think Sonic is “irrelevant”, he may have gone down in popularity in the recent years quite a bit, but I see kids wearing Sonics shirts everywhere where I’m from. Sorry if I caused a fight or anything, didn’t mean to be a jerk.
Sonic Boom and Lost World couldn’t even sell one million copies, but Sonic is relevant because you see some random kids wearing T-shirts in your area? Really? These small occurrences can’t make up for such monumental failure.
I believe Sonic is still strong, despite his setbacks, and I am sure there are still a good amount of fans out there who still have faith in him. Plus, I believe things would be somewhat, partly better if it were not for that exclusivity deal Sega made with Nintendo. Note that I said somewhat and partly, not completely. I am still sure Sonic can make good games again, and will be better over time. If you are not happy with how the series is doing, then no one is forcing you to stay and act negative when there are better things to do out there. Sure, you may say you are a fan of Sonic, but staying with the series and just torturing yourself by not liking how the series is is rather unhealthy mental behavior, and can cause some more harm to you than good. If you don’t like how Sonic is nowadays, there is no need to stick around and wait for a game that WILL please you. Just move on, and let others like the series, even if what they like is what you hate.
I’m not acting negative, for 2 games to not even reach a million copies sold and for the amount of lay-offs happening you can’t just say “oh yeah, Sonic fine”. What I said was a statement of fact, the Colors era didn’t save Sonic from being irrelevant off the internet, regardless of my or anyone else’s opinion of the games’ quality. If you’re gonna respond, please pay attention to what I’m saying.
At least you were no jack*** while responding to me. Heh heh.
Anyhow, while Sonic Colors may not have done much to change how people view Sonic, it still got some good scores. I can say that while the game may not have been the greatest there was, I don’t believe everyone is too hateful for Sonic, except some people like GameInformer, who are not really trustworthy to me (not just because of how they view Sonic games, mind you, for there are other things as well. But, even if a good amount of people don’t treat Sonic kindly, if EVERYONE did not treat Sonic kindly, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations would have gotten much lower scores, and based on what I remember, I can say that those games did get some good scores. Plus, the gaming review industry is not really that credible, and not just in Sonic. I have seen that most people who review games are not so credible and professional, if you know what I mean. It is a shame we still have them regardless, but I still don’t believe they should be trusted.
And just so you know, even if I did say “you” many times, the being negative thing was not entirely directed at you, but some other, certain people around here. I realize that it seems I was talking to YOU, but in spite of that, that is not entirely the case. Please don’t take it the wrong way.
Not to mention, we don’t know what the future holds. Maybe Sonic could get some good games now, maybe not, but we’ll see.
The Frost guy is such an arrogant fool. He shows completely no humility, no acknowledgments of his responsibilities, no accountability… He is like a real politician:
“I take credit for all the successes that happened during my reign. And all the mistakes that happened were somebody else’s fault.”
He didn’t listen to people when they criticized his product, and in the end, his product failed Exactly because the things there were criticized were never addressed. He had TONS of opportunities to address the issues, yet he chose to say only the obligatory: “Just wait and see.”
This whole project was MEANT to replace the fanbase for entire new audience, because some higher ups probably thought that “Sonic fanbase is the worst fanbase there is!”
Yet what they have achieved by ignoring people? Only the very people that make the fanbase bad sticked with it and all normal folks left, seeing how terrible the development process was and how terrible the feedback was.
If they think that normal people are somehow defined by not ever complaining, not even about glaring omissions… they must be delusional.
They cared more about their own image rather than talent. All criticism was taken personally and we were made to think that we are “hurting those nice hard working people” by saying anything bad about them. The entire campaign to promote Sonic Boom was one big fraudulent trick. Most of the stuff they said was a lie. You just can’t expect to put this off and hear praise and appreciation. This behavior didn’t deserve appreciation even before the game was released. It was obvious that it would end up this way.
Just look at it from the NORMAL consumer perspective:
What does even non-Sonic fan (a kind of person this was supposedly targeting) know about that game? They made sure to repeat over and over that it’s it’s own universe so they are allowed to differ. Yet, the normal consumer never had any way of knowing that. It doesn’t say so in the commercials, it was only said in the dedicated interviews from behind the scenes that only super invested Sonic fans watch… tons of info on dedicated Sonic events only Sonic fans attend… Normal person without any knowledge about Sonic never had a chance to know about this game – and to know that it is supposed to be something new, “better”, or something standalone that makes you get quickly invested.
The game starts in the middle of untold story. The beginning doesn’t even get explained. No characters ever introduced. When a person that is new to Sonic watches this, this person must think to him/herself: “Yeah, this is some Sonic shtick I don’t know about alright!”
You can see how catastrophic the sales were. And all of the people who defend this game already WERE Sonic fans before. The same people BRB and Frost wanted to get rid of! And those ended up being their ONLY audience! They were so out of touch with the normal consumer that of course this needed to happen.
And somebody is blaming FANS for that?! Man, Frost and his team DESIGNED this game to be for those people you wanna blame!
Although I have been trying to play nice and cool with fans that like the Colors era I must admit deep inside me I believe the same thing you said.
Colors is a good video game, if you look at it from that standpoint. Its fun to play, has good music and has some liitle nods to old sonic stuff here and there. Its an interesting little answer to mario galaxy of a game. Yes the story and comedy is unappealing to traditional sonic fans. I would have been ok with that if it was a one time thing, but the generations and boom continued it and it isn’t doing the franchise any favors now. I think the writing team needs to get rid of this preconceived idea of “target audience”. 1. Focus on a tone in the story that compliments this series. Modern cocky american teenage hipster joker sonic dosn’t really have anything to do with 90’s Sonic’s personality and attitude. Being a douche is not “cool”. 2. Sonic dosn’t have to be this polar opposite of one thing or another. He CAN make jokes, just not every 5 seconds in every cutscene. On the other hand, he can be serious just not emo teenage, shoot faces with guns serious. It’s definitely a balancing act that sonic team has to figure out. The classics had no issue with balancing the tone and they did that without ever determining a “target audience”. Their target audience should be anyone who likes good games set in an odd universe where theres a disporportioned egg shaped mad scientist who captures woodland creatures and puts them in animal shaped robot and he is chased and stopped by a blue hedgehog that can run really fast. Theres enough run for fun silliness and seriousness.
“Colors is a good video game, if you look at it from that standpoint.”
From a solely technical standpoint, it is functional. That’s it
“Its fun to play, has good music and has some liitle nods to old sonic stuff here and there. Its an interesting little answer to mario galaxy of a game.”
Playing through blocky 2D mazes that are designed more like Mario or Megaman is not that fun. Especially when they are so dragged over and they outnumber the 3D sections. Speaking of which, those few 3D sections are either emptier and shorter corridors than Unleashed, on-rail running or scripted sequences. And while some easter eggs are acceptable once in a while, since this game they did NOTHING but nods or outright rehashes of old games, which makes it even more unstomachable.
An interesting answer to Mario Galaxy ? As in a try-hard wannabe, before Lost World came along and outright copied Mario ? And the Wisps ? What point do they have to be ? They are Mario power-ups thingies, either as nerfed characters abilities (Drill and Frenzy = Knuckles, Hover = Tails, Spikes = Spindash) or plain useless gimmicks.
But I’m glad you’re discussing about the writing team. You see, Pontac and Graff were cheap for Sega, they didn’t have experience, nor talent, just wanted to do things their way with little to no knowledge (they watched just a bunch of cutscenes and read from Wikipedia). The worst part is also that they kept them throughout these 4 years and half, so, it wouldn’t have been a one time error, and many childish elements were started, in a way, since Unleashed (although, it was a Japanese writer back then).
And yes, the “target audience” argument is such a stupid strawman argument to cover up the lazyness (from SEGA) and the sub-par tastes and insufferance of cool contents (the fans of this direction. Well said.
“Their target audience should be anyone who likes good games set in an odd universe where theres a disporportioned egg shaped mad scientist who captures woodland creatures and puts them in animal shaped robot and he is chased and stopped by a blue hedgehog that can run really fast. Theres enough run for fun silliness and seriousness.”
Yes, EMBRACE the sillyness of the universe ! Like DBZ or any other anime ! Take things seriously, have the characters proactive to the story and acting like fully fledged personas ! Have a balance between light and dark !
Not make it an awkward, detached, sarcastic Internet parody, where everyone is either bored, or Sonic is an undefeatable, crappy Deadpool-tryhard, or an outright bored grumpy old man, where everything boils down to ENDLESS dialogues about bullshit (I.E. : food jokes, Sonic’s bloated brags about measly achievements, pointing out how mundane and stupid their life and world are).
At least, I hope this is what you meant, right ?
