RUMOR: No NiGHTS, BR Sequels in the Near Future?
The Dreamcast Tech Pages has found an article from MSNBC. This excerpt is what you all should find very interesting:
Yuji Naka, who started with Sega in 1984, is Sega’s best-known consumer game creator. Though his first projects were Master System translations of Suzuki arcade hits, Naka’s first original title, “Phantasy Star” is generally considered the best game ever to appear on the system.
Naka is an interesting study. He is a perfectionist who prefers direct involvement in all facets of making. He has been both designer and lead programmer on most of his games.
“I did not do programming on Sonic Adventure,” says Naka. “The last game on which I was the main programmer was “NiGHTS.” I did some programming on Sonic Jam as well, but I kept to producing since then. If I weren’t so busy, I’d like to do more programming. I like doing that. I’d prefer to have somebody else producing so I could program.”
Naka’s library of hits includes “Ghouls ‘n Ghosts,” one of the first great games for Genesis, “Sonic The Hedgehog,” “NiGHTS” and Burning Rangers. With “Sonic Adventure,” his first game for Dreamcast, Naka demonstrated that he knows how to tap into the power of a 128-bit processor.
The next question is, “Now that he has successfully brought “Sonic” to Dreamcast, what about “Burning Rangers” and “NiGHTS?”
Naka has no plans for “Burning Rangers.” He was thoroughly disappointed with the sales of the original game for Saturn, and believes that would need even more power than Dreamcast to do the game properly. “NiGHTS” is another matter.
“The first “NiGHTS” was a difficult game to make. If the world that the game is in or the characters are missing one important element in the Dreamcast version, the game will be a complete failure and everybody’s going to look at it and say, ‘This is disappointment.’ That’s a lot of pressure,” says Naka.
“NiGHTS’s”’ success makes it even more difficult to match the expectations of people. It’s like Spielberg’s decision not to make another “E.T.” movie. Being able to match those expectations and actually exceed them for the fans is extremely difficult, almost an impossibly difficult task.”
When I pointed out that George Lucas made another “Star Wars,” Naka simply smiled and said, “After 20 years. Maybe I’ll do another ‘NiGHTS’ in 20 years, too.”
There you have it, friends. But here’s the interesting part…this is from last August! That’s right, something everybody looked over! That said, do these statements still hold true in February 2000? Stay tuned.
