New Sonic Synergy (Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric prototype) trailer arises
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric had one of the most convulsed development processes in recent Sonic history. We know part of it, but there is still many secrets to be found. Now we know a little more about it’s trip to development hell.
Thanks to Spanish site Sonic Paradise we got hold of a previously undiscovered trailer of Sonic Synergy, the game that was later renamed as Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.
A member of the Spanish community, MotoBadnik, found a long-lost trailer where we can see several concept arts for the game when it was still on its Synergy phase, along with many lost levels, animation and images, and even a 4 player mode. The game was already set on Wii U, but we can see scenes from a more detailed version of the game running on a higher spec system, like the reveal trailer had. There is also a few unused Eggman redesigns.

The trailer was used for a sales presentation, and was published at Michael Horwitz, a professional trailer editor who has worked on several other AAA games trailers like The Last of Us, Uncharted 3, Battlefield Hardline and many others. Sonic Synergy trailer was embed at his portfolio site along with many of his other works, for 2 years completely unknown to the community until now, but thanks to MotoBadnik and Sonic Paradise we can finally take a look at this piece of Sonic history.
It still looks like a crappy PS2 title, but that’s beside the point.
Just like 06…. the only thing we should do is forget about it and move on!
Or you know, we could actually learn from it. You’re not supposed to pretend your failures never happened, you’re supposed to improve from them. I’d much rather Sonic Team and Sega do that rather than barely acknowledge this thing’s existence like they did with 2006. Otherwise this will just keep repeating itself every few years.
They don’t have to lie that it was a huge success or anything, just need to not shy away from admitting fault and having a laugh at their own expense every now and then. I mean the PR team has been pretty comfortable with 2006 jokes lately, I’d like to see more of that being done with RoL just to make it clear we’re in the moving-on phase.
It certainly does just like the final game. I don’t think it and the other “brilliant” game of that deal should be forgotten anytime soon, it and Boom were supposed to energise the brand instead of killing the momentum they were gaining since Colors. Sega forgets and they’re bound to repeat it, look at Forces if Sega were smart they’d avoid debuting it with something that looks like 06 yet here we are! I’d be like if the first trailer for Force Awakens was a bunch of stale acting in a senate, Disney wanted to avoid that kinda shit so bad that the only reference to a senate in that film was them getting blown up.
People sometimes say the worst thing a game can be is wasted potential, but this is lost potential right here. If the game hadn’t been stuck as a Wii U exclusive/BRB been informed earlier and not had to remodel the game it could’ve been so much better, probably still not amazing but at the least it wouldn’t have been as negatively received as the original release was. Real shame.
Exactly. I honestly still get a shot of excitement when I watch this trailer, probably because there was a decent game in there at one point.
Gotta love those bland uncreative and barely descriptive buzzwords they use to sell the game’s features.
“Adventure” “Discovery””Speed””Collaberative”
Could you BE more bare bones trying to describe your game?
Par for the course considering it’s called Synergy which I’d bet is referring to Boom being a multimedia brand where the cartoon sells toys sells games sells cartoon sells games sells toys.
I like that Robotnik design the head reminds me of the OVA but of course that had to go because all the designs had to look like the modern ones but with clothing and color changes or in Knuckles case jacked on ‘roids.
Eggman looks like he should be the baton thrower standing at the front of a rock-band-turned-marching-band called… the Eggles.
Looks just as bad as Rise of Lyric.
