Massive Rare Interview
Rare were once one of the most celebrated British game developers of all time, releasing a number of classic titles for the N64 back in the 90’s including Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64 and probably most famously Goldeneye 007, a game apparently so good people still cite it when talking about the best console FPS ever made.
Rare trailed off when the Gamecube came along, releasing the good but not stellar Star Fox Adventures. Other games were planned such as Diddy Kong Racing and Kameo (which also spent time as an X-Box 1 title) but Rare’s Nintendo development was halted thanks to Microsoft buying a controlling stake in the company, while Nintendo sold all theirs.
Since then Rare have been releasing a slow and steady trickle of games. Perfect Dark Zero and a beefed up Kameo were both released in time for the 360 launch. Viva Piñata has proved somewhat popular but with a 3D cartoon has failed to explode into the cultural kids phenomenon Microsoft were banking on. Now Rare are working on a number of 360 titles and designed the recently announced 360 avatars.
Despite being in a bit of a slump since their N64 heyday rare are still upbeat about their current situation.
We’re lucky being inside MGS that our remit is to kind of expand and broaden this demographic and do things that are slightly more out there. In a way we don’t have some of the commercial pressures that some other developers do. We can take a risk now and again.
Videogamer.com have recently conducted a HUGE multi part interview with the studio. It’s definitely worth a read. In it they talk about their past, the future and even the chance of Goldeneye showing up on Xbox Live…
