Iizuka: “If We Get Gameplay To Evolve To A Place Where SA3 Makes Sense, Then You Might See Adventure 3”
A new Polygon interview has gone up, featuring Takashi Iizuka. The reactions to this interview will be…interesting. Initially in the interview, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka explained that, while he’s not against Sonic Adventure 3 being made at all, he feels it would be a “step back” with the evolution that the franchise has taken over the years. At this point in time, he doesn’t want to see Sonic “repeating itself” or going backwards. Iizuka wants to see Sonic evolve in its direction, taking things one new step at a time, always moving forward.
“I hear people saying that they want Adventure 3, but the path that we’re on and … Adventure 3, what fans want that to be, might not be an advancement of the series,” Iizuka told Polygon during a pre-Tokyo Game Show interview. So I don’t want to do an Adventure 3 and step the franchise back just to give the fans what they want.”
It’s not that Iizuka isn’t on the same page, he said. It’s just that Sonic Team isn’t interested in repeating itself.
“From the developer standpoint, every Sonic game that we’re making is taking new steps and advances, furthering the game in a new direction, and that’s dictated where the Sonic series has been going,” Iizuka said.
However, that doesn’t mean that Sonic Adventure 3 will never happen. If it just so happens that the gameplay evolves to a point where an Adventure 3 “makes sense”, then “you might see one come out”.
“If we can get the gameplay to evolve and get to a place where Adventure 3 makes sense, then you might see an Adventure 3 come out,” said Iizuka. “But we don’t want to take the entire series back to where it was just make people happy. We want to advance the idea of what a Sonic game is.”

I can see them making Adventure 3 and fucking it up badly… then years later an independent team nails an Adventure engine and is tasked with making Sonic Adventure Mania.
Keep a close eye on the SA Remastered project. For me, I don’t care what the game is called. I just want a quality-made game based on the Sonic Adventure style of gameplay.
We seriously need a Team Headcannon/Pagoda West/Christian Whitehead for the Dreamcast era.
Right now, I’m currently in the process of brainstorming some ideas for Sonic Adventure 3 (as well as other Sonic titles).
Frankly, I think listening more closely instead of insisting he knows better would do Iizuka some good for once. Sonic 4 was a disaster, and Sonic Mania, which was made by the fans, for the fans, finally showed SEGA how to do 2D Sonic right for a change. Now, in 3D, the whole boost-and-rails mechanic of the Hedgehog engine is very limited in terms of exploration and freedom. Now, I understand taking it to the other extreme would be also detrimental. For example, Sonic Utopia, while expansive and easy to traverse for us lifelong Sonic fans, isn’t exactly always easy for beginners to know which way to always go. Just some adventure fields and more open acts is all we ask for to add depth and perspective to the gameplay. You can call the game whatever you want, but a true, quality-made spiritual continuation to the Sonic Adventure is warmly welcome and strongly encouraged.
I couldn’t have said it better myself.
I’m sure Forces is going to be a good game, but if they continue to push the series in that direction, I don’t think they will get anywhere. There’s only so much you can do with linear hallways, dash pads, and rails.
Like you said, it doesn’t have to be called SA3. Heck, it doesn’t even have to have Adventure in the title. But maybe going back to the ideals of the Adventure games, adding some I the new ideals from the more modern games, and evolving the series from there will dote whole series a lot of good.
I don’t even mind if they just gave us one very good Adventure-style level and the rest were Unleashed-style as they re-hone their ability to create in this style. Even get the best fans on the scene and have them help make it one powerful, unforgettable Adventure-style level that will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt they are back on their game. At this point, I am just wanting something more free and open and less of this predictable, stuck on-the-rails gameplay. Sonic Mania proved you can make great levels that you can speed run in 30 seconds but can traverse in every which way for up to 10 minutes and still not get your fill of every sight and scenery. Bring us back over a gradual evolution to many of the strong ideals of the Adventure series style that stand as the pinnacle of Sonic in 3D.
Well, if they decided to take the series in to a new direction, then i guess adventure 3 is gonna have to wait for a while. I understand that they don’t want sonic to repeat everything again from his past adventures. Now i see why the team is really having a hard time bring the series to be great again.
If a continuation of the SA style is what you want, your first port of call should be that Sonic World fangame. It takes the style of gameplay from the Adventure games + Heroes and expands upon it, even adding in the drift from the Boost games. You can even make your own level if you’re skilled enough!
If Sonic Adventure 3 is a go, include Sally Acorn in it!
I mean, that statement would make sense if they weren’t currently making a mostly 2D game with old levels being reused again, AKA, Sonic Forces.
The only this advancing the series in that game is the custom hero, which I find to be a great idea. I just don’t see how he can say that he doesn’t want to go back just to make the fans happy, when he is doing that in Sonic Force with reused level themes, mostly 2D (which is something that the series “evolved passed” with the Adventure games), and reused plot ideas.
Classic Sonic even being in Forces is a sign that Sonic Team is completely fine with retreading old ground just to appease fans. That goes for Green Hill and any other reused level we may see.
The problem with Iizuka is that everytime he answers to the fans he sort of contradict himself, first that stupidity of saying Sonic’s World is a separate one from Humans when that was never adressed in previous games, now saying they don’t wanna rehash while still clinging to Green Hill Zone and Classic Sonic like an overly protective mother (though to be fair, I’ll take that back if Forces have a good story reason, after all, Green Hill is a place in that world so I don’t mind too much, or at least I wouldn’t if he bothered to show Station Square again).
I know. Iizuka’s argument is as easily refutable as showing the official press images of Green Hill. What he is saying between the lines is let us make what we think is best for you, not what you think is best for you. I understand not every recommendation of every fan should be considered or even taken seriously. But come on: if you go to so much painstaking effort to add OC’s which wasn’t and isn’t on the top of our list, the least you can do is make at least one Adventure-style level for the game—just one. It is like they are stuck in corporate la-la-land where the company dictates what the consumer wants and feigns that it is innovation by pulling fudged statistics out of the air to try to prove it is something worthwhile.
A few years ago, I once posted the idea of making a Sonic Adventure-style game. Here is the idea again: you could play as any Sonic character and beat the game through to the end, including collecting all the Chaos Emeralds do you attain Super form and save the day. Imagine a game like this where you could pick from a roster of 20 or 30 some characters, including:
Classic Sonic
Modern Sonic
Classic Tails
Modern Tails
Classic Knuckles
Modern Knuckles
Amy
Fang/Nack
Mighty
Honey
Princess Sally
Bunny Rabbot
Rotor
Antione
Espio
Charmy
Vector
E-102 Gamma
Tikal
Big the Cat
Shadow
Rouge
E-123 Omega
Cream
Blaze
Silver
Each scene is the same except the character’s responses and interactions are customized to fit their personality. Even more of them could even be available via DLC packs with custom dialogue added for the scenes they each go through. Maybe even have the option so fans could make their own DLC packs of more obscure characters—not just generic OCes.
How about Sonic: Choose Your Own Adventure.
Listening to this man is like…

I would love Sonic Adventure 3 to happen someday, personally I feel the “evolution” of Sonic they need is to nail the physics, platforming action and level design of the Genesis games in the 3D world, after all that was the premise of the Adventure games but they couldn’t make it work properly for whatever reason and we got a lot of scripted segmens here and some bland level designs there, with today’s technology and a Sega that is willing to give more time and polish to its products they could give it another go.
“Sonic Team’s not interested in repeating itself.” Rrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. I’m sure almost everyone above me has already asked this a billion times by now, but how many Green Hill clones are we up to by this point?
Also, yeaaaaaah, sure, why would you EVER want to give fans what they actually want? That’d just be stupid, what’s the point in having a dedicated fan base if they actually want or expect things all the time, pfft, that’s just silly.
In all seriousness, if he was legit on what he was saying, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 never would have happened. Unless he’s saying all of this in hindsight and knows that it would be a foolish idea to just jump into a SA3 with little more than nostalgia alone and no actual innovation, creativity, or technical effort at all, and that doing so would pretty much muddle the idea of a “Sonic Adventure 3” for fans everywhere in the same way Sonic 4 did.
But if that really was the case, he should have just come out and said it that way, a lot of people would really understand. But nope, he’s just gotta be Iizuka and find the poorist and most awkward way of explaining away something that fans seriously care about, just like he always does. God, he can’t even make me hopeful for the mere idea of an SA3 without making me disappointed with how he explains things, why you do this Iizuka? XP
Well, if they decided to take the series in to a new direction, then i guess adventure 3 is gonna have to wait for a while. I understand that they don’t want sonic to repeat everything again from his past adventures. Now i see why the team is really having a hard time bring the series to be bring great again.
What we need now at this point more than SA3 itself is an SA1 & SA2 HD Remake and maybe even a Sonic Heroes HD Remake as well!
It would be the new DX and Battle ports for next gen consoles, but not just ported over to the current consoles…
COMPLETELY REMASTERED FROM THE GROUND UP!

Wow-zee-wow-wow. I just want a game with a style like this. It doesn’t have to be these scenes. But just something with this cool, intense style again like these fans can replicate well to some degree would make me a happy camper:
