Hatsune Miku On TIME’s 15 Most Influential Fictional Characters Of 2014

Hatsune Miku has had a big year. Between new exhibits, touring with Lady Gaga, and an appearance on Letterman the vocaloid has a lot to be happy for. TIME Magazine has listed Hatsune Miku as #8 on their  list of the 15 Most Influential Fictional Characters of 2014. Her position on the list is higher than Hello Kitty and even Thor.

It’s been a year full of building momentum for Miku and 2015 will be interesting to see if it continues.

While the Sonic franchise rises from the ashes of this year’s failures, it may be wise for Sega to let Hatsune Miku and Yakuza keep their public impression positive through 2015 so the Sonic franchise can be geared up and ready for a strong 25th anniversary debut. I have already seen too many failures and letdowns with the Sonic franchise the last few years that I think it is time for Sonic to take things slow and easy and let the other Sega IPs pick up the financial slack while he’s on a brief hiatus.

        1. I regret having seen the list myself. It’s just another reason why I gave up on Time as a trustable news source a while ago. I agree with maybe four or five but the rest were clearly contrived.

  5. This makes me happy… But one thing.
    As much as i love miku, it’s wayyyyy to colorful for me, like, I think it can cause seizures.
    I love colorful games but has anyone gotten headaches from Project Diva F2nd?

    1. Nope. (Not in answer to the game itself, but watching online videos of the game.) Then again, I can turn up practically any screen to full brightness and use it for the entire day without any detectable eye strain. I have heard of people with sensitive eyes using sunglasses to help make it less intense on their eyes. You might want to look into that. Plus, sunglasses look classy and snazzy anyway! 🙂

  9. I’m also not sure how Miku is any more influential this year than she’s ever been in the past. The reason they cite in the article is the same conversation that’s been going on with ALL Volcaloids since pretty much their inception, she’s just (more) popular in the states now.

    Really, I’m not sure how half these people are on the list, most of them are only “influential” because of the current social climate and would be replaced by any other character if they were two seconds later to the limelight. One of them is also Kim Kardashian.

  10. There should be a more accurate list. Some of the characters’ descriptions on Time don’t describe why they’re “influential” at all-only talk about how successful at making money they were. Someone should make an ACTUAL list, describing characters who actually ARE infuential, instead of just making alot of money.

    1. Keyword: money. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was sponsorship and advertisement money that played in as a factor in the final determination of this line-up.

  11. Why is Kim K. on the list if she’s a real person? It says FICTIONAL characters. Hmph. Kim Possible would be a much better candidate except she isn’t relevant anymore. 🙁

    1. Kim K game…. That was actually a thing…I even played the game to see what the big deal was and it wasn’t. Kim K aka Booty queen aka Ms butt aka (anything that relates to the rear ends size.)
