Hatsune Miku to Open Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP Tour
It would appear Sega has snagged another celebrity tie-in, though this won’t be for Sonic. Instead, the vocaloid pop idol Hatsune Miku will be going on tour with pop icon Lady Gaga.
Gaga herself announced the news to her Little Monsters on Facebook yesterday:
ARTPOP actually starts May 4th and includes cities such as Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Vancouver, Seattle, San Diego, Boston, Montreal, Chicago, several venues in Texas, Los Angeles, and more. A full list of cities along with tickets for purchase can be found at this link.
As strange as this may sound, and as strange as Gaga can get, this could be an important breakthrough for the Miku franchise in the West and for Sega. Gaga is still a top tier celebrity, more than Danica Patrick or Wreck-it Ralph ever can be. Miku’s appearance can drive sales of Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F and perhaps plant the seed for the upcoming Project Diva F 2nd in the Fall. If done correctly, Miku can potentially take some burden off Sonic as Sega’s moneymaker in the West.
We’ve put in for comment to Sega to find out if this is an official arrangement. We will let you know if we hear back.
