Vegas Licensing Expo Newsletter Speaks of Sonic 25th Anniversary Celebrations
Although the Vegas Licensing Expo has long concluded we’re still getting news from it.
A daily newsletter that was posted, one that showcases the various booths that are at the expo with news and photos, had a portion of which SEGA was discussed In it they speak of Sonic’s 25th anniversary in that SEGA is “building momentum” for it with “new licensing programs launching this year”. Apparently SEGA is planning to go big with merchandising for the anniversary.
It closes with the following:
SEGA is also planning to showcase the heritage of the classic “Sonic” franchise as part of its anniversary celebrations
It is to be expected for anniversary celebrations with, at the very least, merchandising. However with how unpredictable SEGA is there’s no telling what else may be in store. Whatever may be the case the countdown to Sonic’s 25th is not far from getting underway.
We’ll keep you up to date on any further developments.

“SEGA is also planning to showcase the heritage of the classic “Sonic” franchise as part of its anniversary celebrations”
That worries me a bit, but BAH. It could mean anything.
Given the context I think is safe to say that by “classic” they’re talking about the main Sonic series and they’re only using the phrase ‘classic franchise´ to differentiate it from Boom.
As for heritage I hope they’re refering to the franchise cast and mythos and that they will expand it rather than keeping relying on nostalgia to sell.
I would like to hope too, but I know better than that.
So far it seems that SEGA didn’t quite own up to their promises of higher quality (the mobile phone games)… or any promises in general.
Best Case Scenario: A re-take of Sonic Generations that offers more expansive, involved and dynamic gameplay and features, using what they’ve learned to offer a LOT more content and activities and possibly more playable characters.
Worst Case Scenario: Sonic Mega Gems Classic Collection Plus….which isn’t that bad when you think about it.
I’m not sure about another Generations. Iizuka said that they don’t plan on ever making another one. But then again, who knows? Plans change. They made Sonic 4, who’s to say that Sonic Generations 2 wouldn’t ever happen? If it ever were the case, then I would certainly hope that they would take what they’ve (hopefully) learned and apply it to what they’ve already gotten right in Generations and make it a million times better, with longer levels (Unleashed length), more stages and acts, more cool features, and a more agreeable gameplay style. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the Unleashed style again, although I found that to be my favorite, but it should be something that works largely in the same way instead of like how Lost World and Boom tried to compromise on Sonic’s various styles. Also, it would be nice to have an artist or band actually perform a theme for the game like they used to, it’s been so long since I’ve heard Crush 40, Bentley Jones, Cash Cash, or anybody really perform any song for a Sonic game, this is a trend that needs to return.
Or Sonic Adventure 3, but I’m getting ahead of myself. I just want something great akin to when I jumped on board the series during the Hedgehog engine era. Albeit, I did start off with Shadow and 2006, but if Sonic Boom is any marker of a new cycle, then I can only guess that history might repeat itself and give us something amazing again. Only time will tell.
Iizuka said that they don’t pln on ever making another Generations?
I didn’t know that.
But like you say… it may mean nothing. They are changing their mind constantly.
I wish they are actually going to make the same as Puyo Puyo anniversaries. On that franchise, Sonic Team released a 15th anniversary and 20th anniversary games, getting the best of the series into a game, which actually made old and new fans love them.
In other words: Some kind of Generations 2, mixing classic with modern.
Oh dear…
This raises a ton of red flags.
Sonic Generations 2?
I think they’d probably be saving that one for the 30th anniversary, if anything. Just my thoughts though, it’s always a possibility.
Please let there be a “Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 3”.
As unlikely as it may be, I am with you on this one, sonic3Dblast!
Oh great. Sounds like another attempt to glorify the series’ past and rely on nostalgia yet again. Raising tons of red flags here. I hope this is just for a special anniversary convention and not for the 25th Anniversary title, assuming there is one.
Usual PR talk resorting to classic Sonic as a promise of quality.
Nothing new here.

Happy 25º anniversary!
sadly.
itd be cool if it was generations 2 but who knows
Please, please, PLEASE don’t release another Generations, stop shoving motobugs and other badniks into your games as a “nostalgic” cover-up to excuse your lack of ideas, stop the McNosehair, stop the stupid jokes and leash your Boom already!
Seriously though if Sega/Sonic Team can’t do anything other than aimlessly pondering in the past, give the rights of developing games to Platinum Games.
I’m more than excited to see what a Sonic game made by them would look like.
A fresh new adventure with a fast paced gameplay where skills do matter again while the storyline also has it’s importance and depth again, the characters are real characters, not just shallow cardboard cutouts and NO kindergarten jokes!
The characters of the 1991-2009 Sonic franchise, some decent band to perform a main theme and/or some part of the OST like Crush 40, Zebrahead and Rumblebee did in the older games (all of them were awesome) all of this topped with some over the top fast paced action and Bam! Dream Sonic game achieved!
But for this to come true, you need to crush and burn the shackles of “Eggbreath” and gather some more venture, Sega! A New Venture!
While I agree with the need to ditch motobugs, crabmeat, caterkillersm and buzz bombers specifically, new badnik designs (or at leas old ones that haven’t been used a lot) would be nice to see I think. Mixed in with the newer bots for good measure of course.
Other than that, this has all of my yes.
Why Platinum though?
Because of Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, a game I played as a Sonic game surrogate.
It’s got the decent action packed storytelling, the one-liners, kickass soundtrack and gameplay, so it’s probably the best Sonic game made since 2009.
All in all, it’s a great example of what a Sonic game COULD be, if Sega wouldn’t be so focused on making Sonic super toddler friendly nowadays.
I hope they finally sell some good looking Sonic shirts, there have never been any really good ones. Why have I never seen a Got Ring? shirt anyway?
I just want something fresh and fun… Just something good.
The 25th anniversary Sonic game should include all three generations of Sonic. Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic, and Sonic Boom Sonic. Please SEGA release a Sonic Generations 2 game featuring all three generations of Sonic, and release this Sonic 25th anniversary game on Xbox One, Playstation 4, Nintendo Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS.
Well, I did not.
Classic Sonic being full 2D and modern Sonic being half 2D.
Can’t they please make at least one fully 3D Sonic game per decade? That’s not too much to ask!
Please no Sonic Generations 2. And NO Sonic Generations 2 Boom. That would be the ultimate proof that Boom absorbed Sonic. I would much rather live in hope that it will not happen, even false one maybe…
Or on the other hand… nah, I would much rather know the truth.
And the truth looks rather grim when they are talking so lengthly about Boom when the topic is the Sonic’s anniversary. “Hurray, let’s celebrate the 25 years of Sonic franchise by this new franchise that was solely created to target all other people BUT fans of Sonic franchise!” Makes so much sense.
