Ulala to Become Sega’s Leading Lady
Webmaster of our sister site Shadow of Light Neon Chaos, who also reports news on the Sonic Scene, has sent me part of an article from the Chicago Sun-Times, explaining that Ulala, the main character of Space Channel 5, will become the main spokeswoman for Sega:
Move over Lara Croft. Ulala (pronounced ooh-la-la), the 22-year-old, pink-haired budding newscaster, wants the spotlight. Touted as the next cyber icon, she will star in Sega’s huge multimillion-dollar marketing campaign, which starts this summer in the United States.
Ulala, designed by Sega’s veteran games creator, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, is meant to be a fledgling newscaster who moonlights as a dancer strutting her funky stuff to his vision of “retro-futuristic” 1960s-style club hits. No more adult-rated, gun-toting zombie bashing–the aim of the game is for Ulala to out dance alien “funksters,” free their captives and, of course, save the universe. She also will be appearing across the world on billboards, TV advertising campaigns and print media in all her orange and pink glory. Charles Bellfield from Sega U.S. says: “Ulala will be a spokesperson for the company.” The fantasy woman’s voice will be provided by the American pop star Apollo Smile, described as a cross between Britney Spears and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or a cheerleader on a caffeine high.
