Tails Voted One Of The 20 “Most Annoying Video Game Characters”

Fans of the Foxboy might want to grab the flaming torches now, as you won’t like this – your favourite fox has been put, and put quite highly, in a list of the “Most Annoying” videogame characters.

You might be thinking at this moment that it’s probably IGN, or Destructoid or someone like that who has decided to get your back up but – oh no – it’s that bastion of gaming journalism, MSN. Yes, MSN – I’m as surprised as you are.  I didn’t think they did stories like this, preferring instead to highlight how footballers buy cars and tell us what Katie “My Life Is A PR Exercise” Price is doing this exact second.

The list, written by gaming and technology journalist Tom Perkins who apparently has “seen more novelty USB keyrings than any person should ever wish for” puts poor Tails as high as (apparently) fifth, higher apparently than the Mario Kart Blue Shell. (That’s a character now?)  Perkins cited his inclusion as follows:

“What can you have against Tails?” I hear you shout. “He was the cutest, cuddliest sidekick ever!” No. He was a moron. Impossible to control in co-op; a permanent safety hazard in single player – if ever there was a game character who would look better crumpled under the wheels of a family hatchback, it was Tails.

Apparently Perkins hasn’t played a Sonic game since 1992 then.  The full list is as follows :

  3. *Warning – long-ish post from a Tails and Nintendo fan*

    Wait – Peach is the second most annoying character in computer games? And Luigi? I smell a conspiracy…That or I’ve played games that show these characters as anything but (Super Mario Bros 2 instantly springs to mind, and more as time elapsed, including the Mario RPG series). Unless they’re counting first appreances only in which case…It still makes no sense as Street Fighter II is on there…

    It seems like they focus on one game solely and forget the others. As said for Tails, he actually has come a long way from Sonic 2, becoming a highly popular character who is (I think, don’t quote me on this) third most liked in the fanbase after Sonic and Shadow. Luigi, although being second banana to Mario, is his own star and in some cases even more useful and enjoyable than Mario (see the Mario RPG games). Hell, even Raiden became elevated from his Scrappy position in MGS4 (though I actually didn’t mind him at all – go figure…). But then, these are my views and not to be taken as the be-all-and-end-all.

    However, a decent (but subjective) list of annoying video game characters can be found here; some similar, others vastly different (be wary – this links to TV Tropes, which can ruin your life…) :

    Mind you, totally agree with Navi, Farah and those Blue Shells. Though I’m surprised that “damn” fourth Chaos Emerald isn’t on there *shot*. But at the end of the day, it’s opinions. It’s nothing to get hung up over. Everyone has their own views as to whether a character is good or bad – So long as you like it, that’s the main thing.

  4. I’m surprised Navi is on place 7. As far as I know any gamer would call Navi the most annoying game character.

  5. Why’s Pikachu (completely optional to have except in one game, intended only for defence and attack, doesn’t speak to you unless you instigate, and also is a pretty damn good electric type) on the list at all? And for God’s sake NO ONE is going to agree to Cortana being there.

    And why Tails instead of EVERY OTHER SONIC CHARACTER THAT’S NOT SONIC OR EGGMAN? Damn, it really IS noticeable that he’s never played a Sonic game since 1992!

  6. MOST ANNOYING? WTF? I’ll say this much…Tails to me would be like a little brother…still wishing I had his IQ. I’d be alot more useful in this world. Get ahold of The Emerald Coast Now. We need lord vger on this right away! GO ‘VGER’!

  10. I can’t see anything from the source that suggests the 20 are supposed to be in any particular order. (There’s no numbered list, or any ranks next to the title of each game.)
    Still, there are other Sonic characters who would seem more likely candidates than Tails, who can be disabled in Sonic 2 anyway.

  14. Aww, I like tails! But I have to agree with most of them EXCEPT, the beggars in Assassins Creed should have been 1st! Now THEY are annoying.

    But I must agmit Tails can be very dorkey at times, I mean c’mon an 8 year old that’s as smart as Eggy with Eggy’s his “400 IQ”? Yeeeah…

    But seriously, Tails is smart, but lets not forget him constantly saying: “Sonic! Sonic! Oh no! Sonic!” In Sonic Rush Boss battles and that my friends is how I began to not like him anymore.
    I’m sorry; I can handle Charmy and Jet, but Tails is just one of those characters in a series I grew to not like. Plus in Sonic Adventure, that dude follows you in the shower…’nuff said >_<

    What is Luigi doing on the list? He rules but not as much as Knux.

    I’m afraid that I agree with Tails being really annoying.

    1. His voice is too squeaky
    2. He is far too enthusiastic
    3. The way he follows me around in Sonic 2 and 3 and steals my power ups.

    Peach is annoying but not as annoying as Tails.

    Tails (and a number of other characters on that list) can’t possibly be THIS annoying.

    Except Tails is explicitly on the list for his part in Sonic 2.

    I don’t know if he’s played Sonic 2 since 1992, but I don’t think it will have changed much.

    What a stupid comment. Learn to read.

    1. The point was that Perkins was indeed ONLY talking about Tails from Sonic 2 and was ignoring 19 years of games (at the time) since then which seemed a bit odd.

      Reading is good. Which is why I’m sure you know you were getting bent out of shape about an article from 5 years ago.
