Sonic Writer Flynn in Den of Geek’s 101 Creators to Watch
For all intents and purposes, it has not been a great year for Ian Flynn. Having to again reinvent the wheel of Sonic canon in the wake of Archie’s settlement with Ken Penders has not gone over well with some fans. So it is a bit of a relief to know that Flynn has been named in Den of Geek Comics’s 101 Creators to Watch in 2014.
Coming in at #93, the website raved more about his role at Archie than anything else, citing last year’s Worlds Collide arc as a major reason:
While it’s easy to admire Ian Flynn’s writing, it’s even easier to envy his current role at Archie Comics. He’s a man who gets to play with his toys on a major level as the writer for Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man. When brought on to take over for the Sonic franchise, Flynn was considered a breath of fresh air who slowly but surely brought the series back to greatness. Mega Man is a series he’s been with from the very beginning and has been able to make it one of the more exciting and fun comics on the rack. He’s also written a 12-issue crossover between the two video game heroes, a script I can only imagine has been sitting in his sock drawer since he was ten. It isn’t just that he’s able to have access to these characters, but he’s also able to write some great comics with them, which will continue on in 2014 as he continues to live the dream.
We congratulate Flynn on the mention.
“a script I can only imagine has been sitting in his sock drawer since he was ten.”
Huh, no wonder I thought Worlds Collide was written by a 10 year old’s lame ideas for a cross-over.
Ha ha
kiss my butt, flynn is the best!
Just ignore him my friend. This is my advice to every one who sees comments like this. Its just a formula for trouble.
Actually I thought it was pretty good, plus he had some really good Ideas that got shot down, for example, IICR he had a plan of fusing Bass and metal sonic together, but that unfortunately never came to be, a shame really, since it would have been really cool to see how Sonic and Megaman would’ve destroyed it.
Its great to see Ian Flynn getting the recognition he deserves.
Agreed. While there are people who will bitch over every little thing he does, it’s good to see there are those who appreciate his work, though I think he may have gotten this recognition from that crossover if anything, but hey, him getting credit at all is good, more then what Sonic Team can say right now, especially the current writers.
Amen to that. Idk what’s up with the current sonic team writers. Idk if it’s sega not giving them the creative freedom or what but ever since comic colors the stories just became lazier and more of a backseat thing. I know in the games there the least important thing after gameplay but at least make the cutscence something to look forward to. I end up skipping them half the time.
*Sonic *Stories
I agree. I’ll be honest: I don’t read the comics very much, but after seeing Flynn at NYCC this year, it’s obvious that he’s passionate and he loves what he does. The community really seems to love what he does as well, so I’m glad his work is getting some more attention.
Congratulations to Ian Flynn, that’s very well deserved, he really nails the characters and is a true and passionate fan of both franchises.
If only Sega would let him write the story and dialogs for at least one Sonic game I would die a happy man.
Totally agreed, he should write every new Sonic game, specially if Sonic Team include more characters in future games because as you said Flynn kills it when it comes to character interactions.
A well deserved recognition indeed; Anyone who could take the mess Penders left behind and make it a comprehensive storyline again deserves a freaking medal. That and he lived every (decent) fanfiction/fancomic writers dream; he got to put some of his original ideas/designs in there (Silver Saga, in case you missed it) which turned out great. 🙂
Congrats Ian! Here’s hoping you’re with us for a long long LONG time!
Bah, Ian is at worst a sheer rip off writer whose greatest achievement is wrecking a great comic, boldly lying in people’s faces and acting like a total douchebag acting like his sick fan ideas are the real deal and at best a lackluster who can’t produce snything but average comics stuffed full of sues, plotholes and characters written by the plot rather then vice versa.
Megaman is great simply because capcom won’t let him deviate from the games, and when he finally does it becomes some utter shit about terrorists and robots with emotions.
So yeah, he’s worth looking out for so you can avoid his poorly written comics.
shhh, We know you’re mad ok? Just get your bottle and go back to sleep.
I’d say f u but I can see when I’m dealing with a narrow minded fool willing to put up with everything Archie pushes out the door so long as it has your fave character in it. Sorry, but I expect a certain level of quality which Ian sadly haven’t delivered once.
Sure he is better then the last batch of writers but that is like saying it’s better to be kicked in the face then in the balls.
Ketchup, why are you here.
To see what’s going on in the Sonic franchise like every other Sonic fan.
Wow, so this is an example of the “butt-hurt” Sonic fan? Fascinating. Next time make a YouTube video and scream your rant-y assumptions about someone you don’t know into the camera; instant fame!
As for Ian, congrats, I may not completely enjoy Nu252 ( and alas I’m too mature/old to write something akin to what Ketchep said to express myself) but you definitely deserve the recognition.
Wow, just wow!
So not liking Ian’s junk writing makes me an underaged fan brat. Guess that makes you an old fan brat willing to bend over for everything that has Sonic on it instead of demanding that there is a level of quality and conduct to be followed by the sole writer present at Archie.
Instead we have a writer who openly says he hates characters and likes writing them to be as stupid and worthless as possible. We have a writer who openly lies about the supposed mandates and broken promises.
In short, Ian is a step up from the last batch of writers but he sure isn’t that much of an improvement.
“makes me an underaged fan brat”
Well, those are your words, not mine. But calling someone you’ve never met or talked to directly a douchebag using only his internet text and conjecture is pretty fanbratish and immature. Hate his work all you like, it’s out there to love or hate, but personal attacks and attacks on character through the net is where I draw the line on that subject.
As for the “makes you an old fan brat willing to bend over for everything that has Sonic” remark, well the comment you replied to has me comment that I don’t care for the new direction of the book so I’m not sure where that stance came from or maybe you were just trying to be facetious. Like I said, it’s hard to tell context with internet speech/text.
Finally, someone who doesn’t just blindly praise Ian.
But instead, blindly bashes him, but to you, that makes him so much better. lawl
@Trez
“but personal attacks and attacks on character through the net is where I draw the line on that subject.”
Get down from that soap box and pull out that oversized sitck you got logged up your bum or have you already forgotten how willing you were to insult me in your first post through the net without knowing me.
I have had contect with Ian through Bumbleking and everytime it has been nothing but utter BS he responded with. Nothing but pure lies, frabrications or plain out silence came to everything single questionm even on he message board he’d openly lie to cover his own ass.
Not once has he been willing to accept the blame when his abuse of the comics mandates, lies about storyline and OOCs from characters due to the demand of the plot.
Not once.
I’ll get off my soapbox when you get off yours my friend, and the fact that you responded to my little joke means I was out of bounds correct, but of course you weren’t out of bounds in your mind I’m sure. I have no qualms with your opinion on Ian’s stories but don’t act like what you spout off about is fact. All you say is conjecture through what Ian says on his site which anyone can do but that has no input to his character and it seems you formed a persona for him to match why you don’t like his work. But perhaps Carlos is right, I don’t feel like arguing on an article where there is nothing worthwhile or even semi-intelligent to argue about.
@Trez my friend did you not heed my warning up above. It starts with a very outrage-like commenter who seems to have a grudge against the subject at hand. Then some one points it out and try to show pretty solid evidence on how. Then they flip out. He might even respond to this as well to get what many angry internet commenters do as a “last say”. As in he might respond show how he is dead right, explain that it’s his opinion, even though there’s many times he likes to force it on other or speak for everyone, and if I were to respond to his childish antics the whole thing starts all over again. So please Trez I’ve seen you around the site and I can only give advice, when you see comments like this any where be the better person… ignore. Oh and since he may ask later to get his “last say” and I don’t want to respond. The reason there are childish antics is because, first off, your attitude in your writing comes off as a child not receiving what he wanted so he must make any excuse to complain. Oh and finally most children say “Fine!” when they feel emasculated by there parents, the “last say” is just the way to deal with it on internet.
