Sonic Underground is getting an epilogue at Archie Comics
Looks like we’re finally seeing an end to obscure DiC produced cartoon Sonic Underground.
The series will get an epilogue in Archie Comics’ Sonic Universe 50th issue, coming next March. In this single issue, Sonic Underground will finally see an end to its storyline, left 14 years ago with the series’ ill-fated end. We will see what happened once that the series ended and, for the first time, we will be able to see one of the many Sonic canon lines have a proper resolution.
It’s not the first time Sonic Underground shows its face at Archie comics. Back when the show premiered in 1999, there was a crossover with Archie Comics’ Super Special Series to promote the new coming cartoon, so this is not only resolving that cartoon series, but also the closing of a really old comic plot thread left unfinished.
The story will be written by Ian Flynn and the cover is drawn by Patrick Spaziante. You can see it down here.
Nice initiative from archie ^^
I hope that Sonic.Sonia,and Manic find their mom and put an end to Robotnik’s reign.
Um… that’s nice and all but who the hell was asking for the closure on that show.
@TLSonic – People like me. I used to run SonicUnderground.net – and trust me there ARE people who follow this series that want to see what happens in the end.
It’s things like this, going out of their way to satisfy a small amount of fans that puts a smile on my face. They could have easily ignored Sonic Underground and pretend it didn’t exist but didn’t and it shows how much the new Archie Sonic cares about the series.
I don’t really care about Sonic Underground, but its nice that Archie is going to pull something off like this. I’d love to see them do more things like this with Sonic Universe; exploring the depths of other Sonic franchises.
The only real annoyance with Sonic Universe is that it doesn’t have one straightforward story, because it keeps jumping around. But I guess that’s kind of the point; if you want them all, you can get them, otherwise you can just order the issues you want which focus on a topic you’re interested in. Although related to the main story sometimes, its not always directly related.
Of note, though, I’m pretty sure that Sonic X #50 was “The End,” wasn’t it?
I kinda saw this coming.The Main Sonic has traveled in other zones(universes) where he met other version of himself,including the Underground Zone.
@TLSonic
Believe it or not Underground does have it’s fans I’ve seen quite a few “What if there was an Underground Conclusion in Sonic Universe” topics on Bumbleking.
I actually don’t hate Underground and Flynn made Sonic X enjoyable so I’m looking forward to this.
😀
As a Sonic Underground fan, I will gleefully declare this non-canon and keep watching the actual cartoon, one that was put together by competent, caring professionals.
@ Will Pitts
Underground was competent? Meh…..
Archie didn’t HAVE to do this at all but it’s nice that they do care enough to give fans some closure but most fans would’ve like to sweep this show under an old rug.
Ojala que le den un final que guste a todos los fans de la serie :), es decir centrándose en los personajes principales y no uno en favor de otros universos de Sonic, caracteres secundarios -_- o aun peor creando otros que matan+ la historia.
Too bad it’s just a budgeted fan ending. Without the original writers, it can’t be a true proper ending. Otherwise I’d look into the issue. The lack of proper closure continues.
Will Pitts, I would have to say that Ian Flynn is a lot more competent at storytelling then most of the writers for Sonic Underground. But you are still free to your opinion that they are not, and I will not infringe on that in the slightest, because I know what it is to be a devoted fan on something and then watch it all fall to the ground in dust and ashes.
@Will Pitts:
> Sonic Underground
> “…put together by competent… writers.”
I lol’d.
Sigh what the hell
Nice to see they take their fan requests seriously, we’ve been asking for this for years now. I’m a little disappointed that it is only one issue rather than a full arc, but I guess you take what you can get right?
Sonic Remix, that was you who ran SonicUnderground.net? Man, now you’re bringing back fond memories.
@Will Pitts
PFFFFFFFFF-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! HAHAHAHA! OH! OH! A-HAHAHAHAHAHA!!
Oh… I can’t breathe… *cough cough* Oh… I needed that.
@Paul-Agnew – Yea, that was me, a looong time ago. I feel old, ha. Ironically, I was JUST putting the SU site back online at underground.sonickingdom.net when all this went down. (The site is back dated to June of 99, that’s how old it is)
@Will Pitts @serpex
You could try waiting until March and actually read the thing before Nerd Raging about how it’s not a “true ending”.
@BlueRanger
It doesn’t matter how good it is. What’s different from me writing a fan ending and Archie making one? Experience and money, that’s it. It’s not a real ending because it’s not from the original writers. Look at what happened with Sonic 4. It’s not a true sequel to Sonic 3, at all.
@serpx
No but Archie does have leisan’s at SEGA so it’s official enough. Plus it’s all your gonna get realistically.
What does SEGA have to do with anything? They didn’t write the story to Sonic Underground.
Anyways, all I’m saying is that it’s not the real ending. I know that won’t ever exist, and it’s cool that Archie is making how they think the series would’ve ended.
No but they own Sonic.
@Will Pitts
Don’t you think that you should read it before condeming it?
While I’m not a big SU fan (the show had it’s moments, I admit) it’s kinda cool to see an older Sonic show come back, and to see a different Sonic canon in the comics. I might check it out.
Y’know, I don’t care if it’s not done by the show’s original writers, and such.
Most of which for SU weren’t even that good honestly, and Ben Hurst one of the few decent ones, actually didn’t like that show a whole lot, he prefered working on Sonic SatAM.)
Even the show had many different freelance writers (ones who don’t even work exclusively for DiC) for it, in nearly every episode, so why does it matter who writes it, or what company makes it? Both the SU cartoon, and Archie Sonic comic are licensed by Sega, and in the end are Sega properties.
It doesn’t matter if it’s “canon,” or not, it’s for fun, and Archie is doing it, because SOME other SU fans wanted an SU story, and been requesting it for YEARS. Just because it’s not done by DiC doesn’t mean it’s a “fan-story.” In the end both Sonic Underground & the Sonic comics are licensed by Sega, so in the end Sega is the majority owner of the entire Sonic franchise. They have more say-so over Sonic then DiC, Archie, or anyone.
If some SU fans don’t like it, they don’t have to read it, or don’t have to consider it “canon.” It’s just for fun.
Also, it’s not like SU is that much better then the comic. Take out Sonic, Robotnik, Knuckles, and the chaos emeralds out of the show, and it’s pretty much not even a “Sonic” show anymore.
Y’know, SU did use one element borrowed from the Archie canon, Athair.
(Though, he’s different in look, and personality-wise from the comic version.) So it is a bit funny that Archie is now doing an “ending” for it.
Damn, I was hoping it was going to be a 4-issue arc too, but I’ll take one issue over no issue. 8)
Y’know, I love the entire Sonic franchise, but I hate the fans. I hate them all, because all I ever see is bickering back and forth “Why are they doing this?” or “Sonic should sound like this!” or “Sally Acorn is a Mary Sue” or “U must liek Sonamy or I kill u!” …..It never ends! Why can’t the fans just be happy Sonic is still continuing to exist one way or another? Think about all of the other shows or games that have pretty much been ended and aren’t going to see the light of day again except in fanfiction and fanart? Like Danny Phantom, it’s over, we aren’t going to get anymore barring minor cameo/playable roles in Nicktoons games. How about Harry Potter? The series is over, the movies are done, there won’t be anymore new-ness (don’t bring up Pottermore, I can’t get it to work on my computer!) and not everyone can make it to Florida to go to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (okay, so I’m a bit biased on that since I live here, and have already scoped out the entire place while working there >.< ) but think about it! The fans of those shows (and several others) have to suffice with the episodes/books/movies that already exist and go along knowing there won't be anymore new adventures to look forward to. 8(
Sonic is still going, we still get new games, new comics (with new stories) and new merchandise. Instead of bitching everytime something happens, can't you just be happy?
I am extremely excited for this issue, I always wanted an ending to Sonic Underground, and this is as official as I can get, so I'm taking it.
Two cents, I gave them.
