Sonic Re-Modeled by Fan in Unofficial Movie Trailer
When director Jeff Fowler announced a delay of the Sonic movie to February, it was not only to address concerns with Sonic’s design as seen in the now infamous trailer, but to allow necessary time for the movie’s VFX team to make those changes while minimizing concerns of “crunch time,” which can lead to exhaustively long hours and long days.
Standards have been set high for Sonic’s second act, with any number of professional and aspiring artists weighing in on their own vision. But few come as close to painting a complete picture as this:
This total re-work of a more familiar Sonic into the trailer is the product of Artur Baranov, an aspiring animator who has also produced 2D and 3D proof-of-concepts, largely from the Disney universe. With now more than 300,000 views as of the time of this article’s publication since being released Monday, Baranov may well be on the road to the next step in his professional career.
“Yeah, I know that it’s a little rough, I was trying to make it good enough before they actually remake him for their next trailer,” Baranov said of the work.
Rough or not, the turnaround time on Baranov’s part is staggering, as the official trailer will, as of tomorrow, have been in the wild for only a month.
For better or worse, these are the standards by which Paramount and the movie team will be judged on when it’s time to re-reveal Sonic for mass audiences–whenever that may be.
