Sonic OVA Recreated in “Sonic Rebuilt”
Before there was a Sonic movie…there was a Sonic movie.
It, like the current, was known as just Sonic the Hedgehog, but this one was a hour long OVA, with a VHS and DVD release by now defunct ADV films in 1999 and 2004, respectively.
But just because the film’s out of print doesn’t mean you can’t experience it. You’ll just have to in a different way, thanks to the team at 3GI.
In 2018, 3GI commissioned over 200 artists for a shot-by-shot reimagining of Shrek, which has been seen over four million times on Youtube. On Friday, the team released its vision for the Sonic OVA, under the same terms, known as Sonic Rebuilt.
Some community names, mainly from Sonic Retro, do appear in the work, which is available to watch in full above. Don’t be deceived or driven away by some of the production values – the crude mix of hand-drawn 2D, complex 3D, and live action is intentional, and part of the series’ charm.
