Sonic Movie Expected to Fall to 2nd in Domestic Box Office This Weekend
Save for a major surge of interest from fans and families alike, it does not appear the Sonic movie will stay on top of the domestic box office for three weeks in a row.
All major indicators – Deadline, Box Office Report, and Box Office Pro – have called for the movie to finish second to the premiere of The Invisible Man, a science fiction horror film. That film will carve out an estimated weekend of anywhere from $23 million to as much as $30 million. The lower end of that range would rival what the Sonic movie made at the top spot last weekend.
As it stands, the Sonic movie is predicted to add $13-17 million to its haul, according to estimates. Given the current worldwide tally of $218.8 million to date according to Box Office Mojo, there is a chance the combined domestic and international tally could see the film crack $250 million in ticket sales, almost ensuring a sequel will be on the way a month before a strong debut is expected in Japan.
While it is assumed the Sonic movie has made back its total budget, nobody really knows for sure, because Paramount has not released figures on how much it spent marketing the film worldwide.
