Sonic Movie Delayed

When news came that Sonic’s design was being tweaked for Paramount’s upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, there were many questions and concerns. There was more at stake here than just the way Sonic looked — obviously merchandising was already in the pipeline, given the leak, and who knows how much of the film would have to be reworked to fit whatever changes were to be made.

And there wasn’t a lot of time. The film’s projected release date was November of this year, leaving only a few months to make the changes. Could significant tweaks be made in that time frame? How many late nights and long hours would someone have to slave over making an ugly blue gremlin look passable?

Today, some of that has been answered by Jeff Fowler announcing a delay for Sonic the Hedgehog.

Pushing from November to February (Valentines Day, in fact) will give VFX artists an additional three months to revise and implement a new Sonic design. The question still remains for how much is going to be possible in such a short amount of time, given CG-heavy movies are known for taking years of development. Also remaining is the question of what’s going to happen to any potential merchandise that may have already entered production. I’m sure three extra months is welcome, but it’s still comparatively little time.

All of these questions and more will be answered eventually. For now, all we can do is speculate what’s going on behind those scenes. To be a fly on the wall, eh?
