Is “Fist Bump” too chessy a name even for my Crush 40 loving self?
Well, we have had “Reach For The Stars” and “Race To Win” and “Free”… But “Fist Bump” is kinda a step beyond those. Hmm…
Agh, whatever.
I have the same feeling. It’s not that is bad but. It feels off.
Same feeling. I don’t hate it, it’s just throwing me for a little bit of a loop. Like I can’t even say it’s because I’m too used to Crush 40 because Zebrahead, Bowling For Soup, Bentley Jones, and Cash Cash have shown that it’s not the case, all of their work for Sonic has been equally solid. So what is it about this that’s got me in this grey area right now…?
Maybe I just need to get used to it a little more, give it time to sink in, hopefully by then I’ll have a better idea what I feel about this. Course, hearing the whole song will help too.
It’ll probably be better in-game you know? Just like live & learn grows into you since the start screen. But I still have my doubts about the way these lyrics were done. It feels too much like it was translated to english. I do hope they fix that in the final release. But I don’t think this opinion will ever reach them, not many people are saying that.
I am really looking forward to see how the story plays out. (Gameplay not so much. Not a fan of boosting through an entire level and clearing it in under ONE minute!) This tune really gets me pumped though!
Even without the vocal the main theme of Sonic Force sounded already “out of context” for me, not saying that the music is bad, just that for me it doesn’t “fit” with what we saw / know about the game. .
Now we have an anime like main theme, with a punk vocal, into a “dark” dystopian universe, so even more out of context IMO.
I think we’ve already been told multiple times by Nakamura that the initial impression of the game as dark and broody is actually false and that it’s a lot peppier than we originally thought it was. With an anime-style theme, the Classic Sonic graphics taking their cue from Lost World (aka being brighter and softer than actual Classic Sonic), and that whole line-up-of-legacy-rivals-versus-YOU-and-Sonic, it definitely seems like they’re shooting for the feel of an over-the-top action movie self-insert fanfic, not really a serious dystopian setting.
(Not that it isn’t a dystopia when viewed seriously, I mean more that dystopia usually carries a theme of politics and conspiracy. This on the other hand will just be backdrop for explosions and fandom power fantasy.)
@Doublexxcross
Yeah like when they said that Sonic Force is a “brand new experience” and not a “Generation 2” while in fact we will have more “remixed” level than Green Hill only and a gamaplay which IS generation, I’m rather used to the fact that the Sonic Team fully master the double speak.
And don’t worry, Sonic Force “should” have its “dark themed” moment (and probably one of the biggest of the series, hello Tails), the thing is I’m not sure it might work well when the other part of the game is full of “joyfull tone” and bad joke.
As for the dystopian thing, well… Sonic gone, a world war that Eggman is winning, no hope left until Sonic return, it quite enter into the dystopia definition, especialy from the perspective of Sonic.
Well, yeah, but some people find that out that Classic Sonic is not sonic past self because it was his dimension self that got brought in to Sonic’s dimension. So, I seen alot of people are still complaining about the aspects of the sonic formula in this game. So, yeah. This game is not very dark to me.
Also, The reason why I mentioned IGN is because they were wrong about sonic not being so great if you know what I mean.

They said the game is not very dark as it used to be. So, we have been told a few times by him. i hate to say this but some people think this title theme almost sounds like a anime style that we ever heard before. Also, i hate to say this but, we don’t think sonic was not good. Besides, IGN just admitted themselves, and later, they seen the gameplay formula of modern sonic and classic sonic, they just admit that they were wrong.
@sonicgalaxy27
And Izuka said recently that classic Sonic and modern Sonic are not part of the same universe but with a different timeline, but they are each of them instead in their own multivers, destroying his own canon set in Generation 1.
So I repeat myself, I’m rather used to the fact that the Sonic Team fully master the double speak.
And beside, why are you talking about IGN here?
What is the link with this discussion?
Does anyone else secretly desire another Live and Learn intense theme for a main Sonic title? This song is forgettable to me, unfortunately. Cool that they got a singer from Hoobastank though.
I can’t do this alone
Even though I am strong
Need something more than me
Someone to push me to victory
Let’s see what we can do
Together, me and you
Can’t be afraid to try
Kiss your fears goodbye
No looking back
You and I, we’re on the attack
Full speed ahead
Running to the sunset
Such a different feeling
Both of us believing
We can make it better
Together, we can show the world what we can do
You are next to me and I’m next to you
Push me on through until the battle’s won
No one’s gonna get to us
Into each other we put our trust
Standing united, after the fight
All alone, we will never be
The two of us are holding the key
We see today, a world we couldn’t see
Before I say goodbye to you, one more last fist bump
0.6/10 too much cheese not enough Crush 40.
While it’s not going to top the rest of the vocal themes thru the years, I have to say this isn’t half bad. I wish the name was something more fitting tho.
And tbh, after the absolutely BORING music from Lost World and Boom, this is at least a few good steps in the right direction.
Now what would have been cool is if “One of Those Days”, one of Crush 40’s more recent song, was the main theme.
Not a big fan. The voice just doesn’t fit the song. Don’t know why they decided to go with a band that haven’t put out a song in 5 years now.
Crush 40, or at least Johnny would have killed this song. Really curious to why SEGA has been ignoring them for the past few years. Sure they came back for Generations, but besides that, they’ve really only been giving Jun attention, and not the amount he deserves.
This has to be one of the most conflicting main themes of a Sonic game for me. On one hand, the more I listen to it the more I sort of like it, but on the other hand, I feel no satisfaction for how the lyrics overall turned out… it’s really weird. And it’s not because Crush 40 isn’t doing the main theme, because Reach for the Stars and Free’s lyrics are very satisfying and fit the style of Sonic and the games they represent. Fist Bump’s lyrics really do feel very anime and especially cheesy. I’m very much conflicted, I don’t hate it but I don’t love it either..
The music is good but softcore. Sounds like a blend of SA2 (Believe In Myself), Heroes (Seasise Hill) and Sonic Lost World (Not sure which stage but maybe a couple in style)
Then the lyrics sound cool over it, definitely and improvement. But can’t help but feel like it makes me think of fan lyrics over a jingle with no vocals. Something about repeating “Pull through together because I’ll never back down” kinda generic vibe I guess. It’ll grow on me, but it just made me think of my own original Sonic theme song, United As One , for my own stuff where I like how it came out but I don’t find it impressive on the same standard as any of the Sonic main themes by far.
I read the song title as “First Bump” originally and was like “how creative. Like first bump in the road? First mistake or failure? Sounds plot related”. Then realized it said “Fist Bump” 2 seconds later and was like “oh…… Well that’s okay. I guess.” XD
Screw that. I liked it.
Super cheesy yeah. But imo, has much more feels than Endless Possibility and Reach for the Stars.
How crazy, I was just listening to Hoobastank an hour ago, before running into this!
Not a fan tbh. The vocals sound super tacked on. Like the song was composed first as a completed piece and then handed over to a vocalist to give it lyrics. Unlike a number of the other vocal themes where the vocals take the role of their own instrument inside the composition. I honestly prefer the vocal-less version which is pretty sad. I hope there are a few more character vocal themes or a vocal credits them or something. Cause this is just massively disappointing to me.
Sounds good, better than I expected, but the name is a turn off.
Also this game feels more ‘japanese’ than the preview ones, I like it.
Hoobastank?
Hooba…. Dooba!
Sonic Team is the man in this
The card is whatever you want them to do
Dude, I seriously feel like this guy has just started to record himself singing the song and just upload it to give us a preview. Like seriously this guy wasn’t giving it his all! Hopefully by the time SDCC 2017 comes along we’ll get to hear him sing it at his best on the new trailer…if we get a new trailer that is.
This game is literally Sonic Satam the video game but without the original characters from that and more from Archie Sonic’s version
Imo, so far at least, this is the only Forces vocal song that actually sounds good.
So it seems everybody else is just as divided on this song as I am. Rats.
