Sonic Boom Shattered Crystal Demo Now Available, Japanese Trailer Released
A new Nintendo Direct was shown worldwide today. Sort of. As with every Nintendo Direct that airs worldwide it can vary depending on the region. This is no exception as the Nintendo Direct shown in Japan had a segment reserved for Sonic Boom, or Sonic Toon as it is called there, to show off new cutscene and gameplay footage. You can check out the video from the Direct below.
That doesn’t mean other regions didn’t acknowledge Sonic Boom however. It was revealed that after the Direct concluded that the demo to Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal would come out on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. Keeping to their word that is exactly what happened. It was also announced that Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric on Wii U would receive a demo on December 4th, one month from now.
The cartoon premieres in just a few days and the game releases in North America in less than a week. I’ll be reviewing the cartoon’s premiere episode and Ryan will be reviewing the games.
I will be holding a Q&A all day on November 8th to answer any questions or concerns you may have on Sonic Boom as a whole the best I can. You do not need an account to do so. Stay tuned.

WOW… ok seriously, i have no idea why this game gets so much hate. 🙂
I kind of blame SEGA for a decent amount of the hate these games have garnished. I’m specifically talking about the hate from non-Sonic fans, the general gaming community.
I honestly believe that, even though SEGA has explicitly stated otherwise numerous times, the gaming community believes this is the next MAIN SERIES entry, and not a spin-off. If this is true, I guarantee you this is a result of the hype SEGA’s been trying to get out of fans by releasing trailers and talking so positively about it right around the time it was first revealed.
I could be wrong, so if anyone reading this has any proof this is (or is not) the case, I’d actually love to see your arguments. I’m in the mood for a nerdy discussion.
It wasn’t helped by Sega not being clear back in February about how Boom sits within the whole franchise. It took them a week or two to actually start being explicit about it, and even then there were mixed messages. Even now, I’m still not 100% sure Sega know what they’re doing.
Hey! Don’t forget that an official Sonic Boom 3DS theme is confirmed. I don’t believe a date was given for when this theme will be available on the theme shop, but it was confirmed nonetheless. 😉
11 November confirmed: http://blogs.sega.com/2014/11/05/sonic-boom-november/
Cool! Thank you. 😉
Wii U demo on December 4th? Ummm….That’s nice and all, but you do realize most of the people would’ve bought the game by the time the demo gets released, SEGA?
Also, how come the japanese version of the Direct got to show off new footage of the games and the european and US versions just got “Oh, yeah! Sonic Boom! That’s….coming out too. By the way, you can download the demo for the 3DS version after the Direct”.
Played through the whole 3DS demo last night.
I think my Twitter chain sums it up well enough:

I feel the same way. It’s not terrible, but as a Sonic game, it just feels… like a generic platformer with no substance. Hell, none of the characters play any differently outside of one move. Tails can’t fly- he only glides over fans and stuff, Knuckles can’t climb/glide- he just digs like the Drill Color Power from previous games, and Sticks’ Boomerang gimmick controls like ass, and brakes the flow of the game. The game is also REALLY automated at times- even more so than the Boost games. It feels like the only parts of the game where Sonic goes fast in the 2D levels are actually “hidden loading screens” like the big Mario Galaxy-ish springs in Lost World. Everyone’s pretty damn stiff, too. The Music is pretty forgettable and doesn’t really “catch” me either. The 3D Running sections feel more like a endless runner mobile game with hardly any challenge (though it is the first Zone in the game, so I digress).
As for the positive side of things, the graphics are decent for a 3DS game, the character models are expressive up close, and I like the World Map screen. The 3D sections are the only time where you feel you’re running fast.
All in all, I don’t recommend this game at full price. Wait for a discount or for it to hit the bargain bin or something. Again, it’s not a terrible game; it’s average at best, and it’s just not worth the $40 price tag.
What is your opinion of this game, compared to Lost World 3DS?
Boom has better graphics, and a nicer World map than Lost World 3DS. Boom is also a lot easier and MUCH more forgiving. However, if you ignore the 3D level, I’d say Lost World 3DS was faster and had more flow to it. You can plays as 4 characters in Boom, but only Sonic in LW, but LW has much more variety when it comes to level design and power ups. Honestly, playing as characters other than Sonic is superficial at best in Boom; they’re just re-skins with literally only one move or two being different. They all run the same speed, they all have the same jump height, they all homing attack, they all have the enerbeam, etc. It really doesn’t feel much different to having the Wisps, except the character exclusive abilities are a bit more flow breaking than the Wisps; especially Sticks’ boomerang thing. When using a character ability in Boom, you have to kind of stop and watch them do their move for a few seconds, rather than fully controlling them. Also LW has Super Sonic as an unlockable, who’s super fast, while Boom doesn’t have Super Sonic nor the Chaos Emeralds in its Universe… soo… yeah. Another thing, Boom is surprisingly MUCH more automated than LW 3DS (ironic, since LW 3DS was made by Dimps). You can literally put down the 3DS and just watch Sonic or whoever just run through loops and stuff for a good 5 or 10 seconds or so. Not even the boost games or SONIC 4 were this bad in that regard, I don’t think. And Finally, the music in Boom 3DS, while not bad, it’s pretty damn bland. I think Richard Jacques phoned it in with this one. Windy Hill’s music gets me pumped up, while Seaside Beach’s music makes me feel, well… nothing.
TL;DR: LW 3DS will probably end up being the better product, and this is coming from a guy who kinda hates LW 3DS.
I played the demo last night, and I found it really enjoyable! The controls were smooth, the level was fun and I love the idea of switching characters whenever you fancy rather stopping at a check point or something. I’m so getting this game when it comes out 😀
I played the demo and holy crap. This game is pretty bad. But fanboys will enjoy it.
Demo wasn’t too shabby. Had to get used to the controls a bit, but the game was certainly a fun ride.
my opinion, a podtaku line:……IT’S SHIT!
Soooo…I won’t be buying this game…as predicted. People are entitled to their own opinions, but I honestly think that the only people who could possibly like this demo are A. Fanboys. Or B. People jumping fresh in that know NOTHING about Sonic games. This is not remotely a Sonic game. This is a game with Sonic’s face slapped on it to sell the cartoon. I’ll pass. Highly disappointed in Sega for allowing their mascot to be handled in such poor fashion the last few years. Sega has one last shot with me
What happened to my comment?
A wormhole opened up and sent your comment down into the lair of Cthulhu 😛
That gameplay!!! A sonic game like this is far overdue
