Sonic #291 Listed As Cancelled, Email Going To Subscribers About Sonic Comics Later In April
Looks like Archie’s finally getting ready to talk. We have learned that PreviewsWorld has now listed as “Cancelled” by Archie.
However, the bigger news comes from the link given, which acknowledges information from a call with an Archie representative named Lisa. She seemed “very knowledgable about the Sonic situation” according to the forum moderator who relayed the news. According to what they learned, Archie is planning to email all subscribers by the end of April (yes, April was specifically said) that will let them know what is going on with both Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic Universe. She also said that, if the comics get cancelled, Archie will offer store credit or a refund for the subscription. What is rather interesting is that she acknowledged directly that Sonic readers “wouldn’t probably be interested in Archie”.
There was also some not-as-recent news that came from Ian Flynn via a tweet. He mentioned that multitasking Jughead and Sonic The Hedgehog isn’t a problem for him. He builds his case with the acknowledgement that he used to write 4 books at once.

Now we’ve set a date for the official cancellation. All we have to do is wait.
If I’m cynical and think the worse, it’ll hurt less if it happens.
F*** SEGA and F*** Archie!
They need to bring over some of the comic characters to the video games! Don’t let these character die with the comic.
This news really hurts me personally as I’m a huge fan of the comics and the work put into each issue… But seriously… right before the milestones.. COME ON! I really really REALLY hope that the comics live on with another publisher or something, especially since I’m one of the few who better liked the comic AFTER the reboot. All I can say as of now is that this comic’s run has been a BLAST. I’ve always loved reading each issue, learning more about the characters and world lore, seeing the beautiful artwork in each issue, and reading through the entertaining dialogue and stories from Flynn and the rest of the team.. it was an absolute treat. These comics were an experience that the games would never give us. It was a fantastic run from start to finish, through the ups and downs. Please for the love of all things, SEGA PLEASE do not let the comics or the spirit of the comics die.
I make your words mine… hoping for the best
Everything that has a beginning has an end.
But to not even get to 300 is a fucking joke
What if Sega cancelled the comic as some sort of legal move to get all the characters and the third Sonic Forces character actually IS Antoine?
It would be dumb, that’s what. Also, I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t work like that.
Sad times all around at any rate.
Well, I do think it would be a stupid move, however, sometimes things have to be sacrificed that we don’t understand why. Also, notice what the report says regard what Lisa said: ”if the comics get cancelled”. So the comics aren’t confirmed to be cancelled. But, if they are, and the Freedom Fighters are in Sonic Forces, and the comics are cancelled, then just remember what I said earlier.
Or, well just complain on DeviantArt all day and start useless petitions….Here’s to looking at you Save-Archie-Sonic 😛
Tbh, it’d be dumbest decision to have an Archie character playable before any of the actual main cast. And Antoine? I’d rather play Black Knight again if I wanted Sonic swordplay.
but we do understand why Sonic comics are being sacrificed when its good now.
– archie fucked up legally
– sega is tired of their crap
– archie wants to focus on that crap riverdale
if penders was still involved in the comic’s creation these legal issues wouldn’t exist but sonic characters wouldn’t look like themselves anymore by this point, we would have some crap story like marvel’s current pandering bs.
I’d actually be fine with that. As long as they keep certain aspects from the comic intact. (i.e. Antoine and Bunnie married.)
I’m 100% sure SEGA owns the rights to all the characters that were in the SAT AM cartoon show. Sally Acorn/Antoine/Bunnie/Rotor/ Nicole so it would be pointless to do that.
Yep they do, and every single character that appears on the comic (post-SGW)
They won’t touch those characters with a ten foot pole they’re damaged goods and legal liabilities, it was unlikely back when this idea first popped up in the Dreamcast days and look at it now in this environment. If the comic ends up getting cancelled and SEGA starts a new one with say IDW they will wipe those characters from the face of this Earth rather than let 20+ years of baggage from that cartoon and comic bite them in the ass again.
The Ken Penders lawsuit thing seemed more personal than… well. Penders insulted Archie, the stories, and the Quality of the script.
I am not sure if it was about giving Ken Penders money, but more so about… “I won’t lose to you!”
Can’t say I’m too surprised by this. Was a fun ride, may use that store credit to buy some Mega Man comics or something.
UGH, this just gets worse and worse. All this tells me is that they MIGHT be canceling the series officially by late April and even if they weren’t, the problems going on don’t have anything to do with the fact that Ian is currently the head of three comic series right now.
Guys, I have to say this since no one else seems to. If the worse really does come to happen and this series ends now before it can even reach a proper conclusion, it’s up to us (as in the fan base, broadly speaking) help it reach that point. Fleetway’s Sonic the Comic met a similar fate and look at the turnout it’s fan-continuation got.
I’d say it’s reasonable enough that enough like-minded fans would be able to get together to collaborate on a definitive conclusion to the arcs the series would leave behind, or maybe even an on-going continuation that would allow us to address issues the recent legal struggles have given the comics. More characters could get their memories of their previous lives back, Knuckles could finally reclaim the family and friends he lost, Jeffery St. John could finally get that redemption arc that was loosely being hinted at, Silver can take care of the last of the Genesis portals, Lost World’s story could be handled by much more capable writers, etc. As many possibilities as this would close, it could also open up much much more.
I’m not saying I’m organizing such a huge thing like that (lord knows I lack the managerial skills for that), I just wanted to get the idea out there so that maybe the right people can be inspired by something similar that happened about more than a decade ago. Whether it’s canceled or not, as long as it’s up to us, let’s not let Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog die.
Well, at least I’ll be getting a refund, so that’s something. I think I still had two years worth of comics after Mega Man got cancelled.
If Sega were to use any of the comic characters for gameplay purposes I’d rather have it be Bunnie than Antoine. Everyone else well unfortunately I’d have to say just put them in the background and use them to replace any humans as citizens in Sonics world. Sure you can try and make SOME of the Comic characters as part of the story or playable but we spread have a bunch of Sonics friends at the sidelines who haven’t been playable for a while now. We’d just be adding to that long list.
I’ve been a day one reader since issue 1/4 and gave up after the reboot.
20 years of progress gone replaced with new stories, characters and places we would have to spend another 20 years getting to know.
Will seek out remaining issues despite losing a lot of love for the hedgehog over recent times
As expected, no Sonic comics in Archie’s July solicits: http://archiecomics.com/july2017solicits/
I still blame Ken Penders for this!!!
Damn Right, I’m an old school Sonic comic fan, been with the thing since the very, very beginning. and like the old school fans that dropped off after 252,#thaknsKen, He really did play a major part in shaping what Archie Sonic Pre-SGW used to mean and helped create its demise at 252. If Archie cans Sonic, then yes good riddance, because to me and many old school fans that fueled the stories up until 252, It’s been dead to us old true fans.
If the Freedom Fighters appear in Sonic Forces I will be ALL for it. I just hope these characters don’t die off. Some may say they are legal baggage but Sega can find a way if there is enough support.
Wow. I knew the reboot was gonna die quick, but I didn’t think it’d be this fast.
Good riddance. Should’ve ended at 247 anyway.
I would like to remind everyone that the comics have NOT been confirmed to be cancelled. If you read the article, notice this: ”She also said that, –>if<– the comics get cancelled, Archie will offer store credit or a refund for the subscription.'' So, don't go around saying it's done. Wait for the email and see what it says. And if it is cancelled, I'll just sit back and watch the fanbase do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_il7O3EzLt8
Why would we blow up at SEGA? Archie would be making the decision to pull the plug.
i don’t think Ian can do both. Isn’t he like the editor? Why would he juggle Jug Head with Sonic. If he screws up Jug Head I wouldn’t imagine Archies comics being too friendly considering River dale’s success. If worst case scenario happens and a new editor is placed for sonic, they’ll probably screw up badly. Archies does have a habit of hiring fans who screw up for a long time before making almost decent content. They all told bad stories nobody cared about and the characters they wrote for or create were uninteresting. Perhaps Ian got in over his head and is now fully concerned with Jug Head for the time being.
Oh well, I’m just speculating.
I need to start hearing some good news for Sonic. While Sonic Mania looks very promising, as does Sonic Forces, I really can’t take to hear the comics may be gone for good. Please let them continue.
Personally, I’m just annoyed that this is happening just as I feel the comic was starting to improve. Finally a mostly proper adaption of the series and even was bringing back unused characters and making new ones that WEREN’T horribly written recolors *cough*fuckScourge*cough*
But then again, Megaman’s comic got canned before they could even REACH anything after Megaman 4 or even properly adapt the X series. Oh, but sure they got all the hap-hazardly done crossovers sure, but when it comes to actually going thru and finishing their stories they have, that’s when to can it.
Eh, the comic series was done for me at 100. Endgame was Endgame with the parade of Pender’s OC’s setting up Sally’s ‘death’. It was a long time coming, even if the comics did improve after Ian came on board.
