Sega Stopping Auctions of Imports
We’ve checked the DC Tech Pages, and forumers are reacting to this move. Here’s GunneR:
Yes, Sega can legally stop the sale of its overseas software and hardware “through” eBay since they act as an “in between” or second party.
However they can not stop users from selling to one another via normal consumer trading/sale. It’s apart of your rights as a round eye!
Seth C: Sadly, this is simply going to force more people to piracy. If they can’t get import titles easily, they will make sure they get them cheaply.
Dural: I can see why SEGA is doing it, but really, is a few sales going to make that much of a difference? This has nothing to do with piracy, but protecting local markets.
I fail to see how SEGA has any legal right to do this, and why is Ebay agreeing to do this.
Another stupid move by SOA.
We’ll have continuing coverage on this as is becomes available.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: We have this just in from SegaDojo–a reader E-Mail claims that Sega could stop importers dead in their tracks:
It appears Sega and Ebay are working together to stop the sale of all imported products on the popular auction website. I recently posted two auctions to sell brand new sets of maracas controller for Samba De Amigo. I then received a message via email that said my auction was cancelled. The email said Sega is
prohibiting the sale of all software and hardware that is from the European or Japanese markets on ebay. This comes as a blow to importers in the U.S. as well as myself. If you would like to see the full email they sent to me for more details, I can arrange that easily. I am currently at work right now.
We will continue to follow this as we get new information.
