Sega Officially Unveils "Sonic Generations"
Let’s get you right to the trailer that IGN’s UK division unveiled below, with these accompanying details from Sega’s press release on the next Sonic.
What we know right now is that both modern and classic Sonic will be playable in-game, each with their specific style of attack methods, and each in their own separate dimension–classic in 2.5D, modern in true 3D. There will be “three defining eras” from Sonic’s 20 years of existence in-game, as well as a new principal foe–though it’s to be seen whether this will be simply Eggman retitled as Dr. Robotnik. The game will be out during the Holiday season at the end of the year, and it will only be for XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3.

SEGA America, Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd., today announced details of Sonic Generations, the highly anticipated video game title in development to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th Anniversary. Delivering the definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new, Sonic Generations sees Sonic the Hedgehog playable as both the much loved classic 1991 character, and the modern day video game hero he has become in this exciting new fast paced adventure. Sonic Generations will speed into stores for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation3 computer entertainment system for Holiday 2011.
Set across three defining eras from 20 years of Sonic the Hedgehog video game history, the instantly recognizable environments of Sonic Generations have been re-built in stunning HD and are now playable in both classic side scrolling 2D from 1991, as well as modern 3D style found in Sonic’s most recent adventures. Each incarnation of Sonic in Sonic Generations comes complete with his trademark special move, Spin Dash and Spin Attack for Classic Sonic, and the Homing Attack and Sonic Boost for Modern Sonic. An innovative new interactive menu system allows for complete immersion in Sonic’s universe with favorite characters and hidden treasures gradually being revealed throughout the game.
“Sonic Generations will certainly be a fitting celebration for Sonic’s 20th Anniversary,” commented David Corless, Global Brand Director for Sonic. “By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era. Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic’s universe in a truly unique and imaginative way.”
Sonic’s universe is thrown into chaos when a mysterious new power creates ‘time holes’ which pull him and his friends back through time. As a result, he encounters some surprises from his past history including Classic Sonic, Sonic as he was in 1991.
Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic must defeat this strange new enemy, save their friends, and find out who really is behind this diabolical deed…
And we all called it with the time travel thing!
(inb4 people complain about Classic Sonic having a voice)
Too bad it looks like no Nintendo, but I’ll forgive them if it’s good 🙂
YES.
YES.
FUCK.
YES.
I’m speechless. Holy friggin crap. Sega just blew my mind two times in a row.
Well I guess that answers my question about voice characters, seeing how classic Sonic will have the SAME voice as modern Sonic. But doesn’t the gameplay stage feels like that the developers are taking elements from Sonic Fan Remix?
Dude…..I honestly can’t remember the last time I’ve been this stoked for a Sonic game. I mean I usually look forward to them, but this is kind of on a whole other level. Needless to say, I’m really hoping the “three defining eras” will include levels from the Sonic Adventure games.
Visuals are making me believe Nintendo Wii hasn’t been left out. I’m stoked, still. Physics look … good? What?
It would be nice to see classic Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and possibly even Metal Sonic. The report does say that “favorite characters” will be involved.
I don’t think anyone’s speculated this yet, but couldn’t it be possible that Silver involved somehow since time travel is evident. Personally I believe Sega wouldn’t risk that since he doesn’t have a classic counterpart, and he is too closely affiliated with Sonic 06. It would be more satisfying if Classic Robotnik or possibly Eggman caused the holes in time, but Silver’s “quests” could still be involved
Holy shit… it mentions “him and his friends.” In other words… ITS NOT JUST SONIC!
Damnit yes. That makes me happy. I also like the time travel plot, too.
Okay, initially I was kinda: “This looks awesome… but I wish there were more characters.” Now its more of: “Damnit yes, this sounds SO FRICKIN’ AWESOME!”
I’m so getting a PS3. (‘course, I was planning on it, anyway.)
HOLY SHI-…… NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE THIS!!!!
Btw, did anyone else see Modern Sonic turn into a spinball from 46 to 49 while boosting?? 😀
classics?
can i get SA3, please?
@Master Shake
Yep, definitely noticed that. It makes the “instant boost kill” looks a little more reasonable 😀
@Master Shake
Personally I think Sonic was better without the spindash…
Naw I’m just kiddin’. It was pretty cool to see the return of the blue sphere form. 🙂
Good God… this looks pretty damn amazing! I feel a bit more trusty in SEGA now. Everyone knows the daytime Unleashed formula worked perfectly in Colours (with a few tweaks) and applying that to this game in COMPLETE 3D makes me excited. And Classic Sonic… let’s wait and see for this one, since the last time we had a classic style Sonic game, look at what we ended up with. SipiderSonic: Episode I.
I came rainbows.
RAINBOWS
Thoughts?
I’m pretty much hyped on this game. However, I’m pretty distant on how they diliberately cram down our throats how different the two Sonics are.
Classic Sonic: Spin dash, (probably, but not holding my breath) proper physics, and a good emphasis on platforming and (maybe) no voice acting. All in 2D.
Modern Sonic: Homing Attacking, Boost-fest, rather linear level-design with pre-scripted loops and somewhat floaty jumping controls (which shouldn’t happen considering that Classic Sonic has proper physics. Of course, the earlier sentence is only maybe). Not to mention, voice acting and the character model itself (which I never cared for, but still). All in the “dreadful, franchise-ruining” 3D.
It’s funny how they market this game as “bridging the gap between classic and modern” when (judging from the gameplay in this trailer) this game is only making that gap much, MUCH larger.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll probably love this game. After all, I do love the classics, and I liked the Sonic Unleashed daytime stages (which was the basis for Sonic Colors, the best Sonic game on a console since 1994).
In any case, whatever they do in this game SHOULD influence whatever they do for future episodes of Sonic 4. Key word: “Should”
Two Sonics? Seriously. Yeah that’s ok I’ll pass on this one. Kinda a bog disappointment for me, but I’ll have to see more info On it to make my final judgement.
One thing that I hate is that now there’s gameplay shown and the reactions are even more negative than when it was first shown, this game is going to be a negative success just like Sonic 4 and SOnic Colors.

@RaggtimeSonic
Sonic Colors? A negative success? Riiiiight……
The side scrolling gameplay looks superb. Can’t say the same thing about the modern gameplay.
I can imagine it now: Starlight Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, Mystic Cave Zone, (that zone after Chemical Plant Zone in Sonic 2, can’t remember it’s name at the moment), Angel Island Zone, Hydrocity Zone, Casino Night Zone, Ice Cap Zone, Launch Base Zone, Flying Battery Zone, Lava Reef Zone, and Death Egg Zone (despite how much I dislike Death Egg Zone)! ALL IN HIGH DEFINITION 2D and 3D!!!
And you know what would put the cherry on top:
This as the boss music:
I suggest everyone read the IGN article that came with the reveal on the Sega Blog
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/116/1162323p1.html
Apparently they’ve played it, and they had this to say:
“…but for classic 2D Sonic it’s exactly the same – or, more accurately, it’s exactly the same as you remember it. Sonic’s movement seems much less stilted in Generations than it was in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and gaining and maintaining momentum is a much more satisfying affair.”
Now, I’m gonna wait until I have the controller in my hands to make to final judgements, but this is really good news so far.
Well I first need to start off by saying, so this game has classic physics but Sonic 4 doesn’t. Seriously does anyone else see a problem with that?
BUT THAT IS NOT THE MAIN POINT! Rather the main point is that this game looks just fucking awesome. I see nothing wrong with this game at this point. Classic Sonic looks like Classic Sonic, complete with 2D fun, physics, and holy shit I saw a red and yellow spring in there. Modern Sonic looks like it took the Unleashed gameplay I love and hopefully it’ll take it to the next level.
But 3 different eras? I honestly don’t know if I want to see the Adventure era again, but seeing classic Sonic run around something like Crazy Gadget would certainly be interesting at the very least
QUICK! SOMEBODY SPEED UP TIME SO WE CAN GET THIS! 😀 Do a time warp to the end of this year!
@krazeeKidd102
Sonic Colors not only got good reviews but also high sales, and everyone who ragged on the game got so upset of it’s success either say it’s shitty or pretend it doesn’t exist. If Sonic Generations is good I guarantee you that no one will give it respect.
Classic, Adventure and Unleashed/Colors Sonic. All with different level layouts and playstyles.
Can’t wait to hear the bitching begin.
C:
No need to debate ANYTHING today. This just rocked in everyway possible. There’s even a plot, with other characters but in a cool way. It’s HD, it’s classic, it’s old, it’s new. It’s fantastic. I love it. xD
I’m more happy about this than I was about Sonic Colors. =3
And here is my GOTY.
The Classic 2D Sonic levels look amazing and really interesting….the modern ones though…look like they came straight from Unleashed….just different areas…which is ok…but not as interesting as the Classic 2D Sonic Levels…
Its official: Sonic’s next gen systems has a trilogy!! DONT COUNT SONIC 2006 lol! 1st Sonic Unleashed then Soinc Colors and now Sonic Generations!! and usually with movies n games the sequel arent as good as the ones before it but this case just keeps getting better!! This game can rival Sonic 1-3 and Sonic Adventure 1-2! 🙂
and even though sega didnt say so, this is obviously the hedgehog engine being used! its obvious cuz the graphics look jus like unleashed!! SEGA plz make the game 60FPS!! i havent seen that ina main series game since Sonic 2006! and its not far that unleashed ran 60 on ps3 the xbox is capable of that too! PLEASE SEGA!! 🙂
OH MY MOTHERF**** GODDDD
SEEEEGGGGAAAA YOU ARE GOD!!! You get this one right up from I don’t lknow magic!!!
Hell yhe sega 😀
Awesomeness…confirmed.
It’s offical now my childhood is epic
If this mysterious enemy is Metal Sonic, this game will officially be as good as Unleashed, and if Amy and the Chaotix are in it, it will be better….
This is REFREAKINDICULOUS!!! OMG THIS IS GONNA BE EPIC BABY LETS DO IT!!!
GHZ Generations reminds me of the first world of DKC:R.
@serpx
Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, Zangeki no Reginleiv, Last Story and Xenoblade disagree with you.
Okay plot is more relax, which is great for a celebration game.
2 Sonic’s is great.
The physics seem similar but not exactly the same. 2D Sonic seems to stop when you want him to (on a dime) and his platforming looks more…like platforming. He moves fast in fast sections but if you do something that is anti-speed it’ll slow him down (hitting badniks did not magically make him go at the same speed)
3D Sonic uses what is unanimously the funnest 3D Sonic (in years). I hope he has that “stop on a dime” thing too so he can more-properly echo stages (the likes of which I personally hope include City Escape and maybe just 1 Shadow the Hedgehog stage).
This game beats the crap out of the Fan Remix one. And WHEN will that one be finished, HMMMMMM???
That was so cool. that made my day 😀
Official!
-Sonic Unleashed
-Sonic Colors
-Sonic Generations
The Jewels of Future :3 !!
I remember when everybody dreamed with this game, after Unleashed
NOW…is a Reality :D!!!!
OMG!!!! O_O
I was psyched by that teaser trailer, but this….
THIS IS JUST TOO AWESOME FOR WORDS! It even looks like they actually gotten the physics right for a change. I’m having a good feeling about this! 😀
Hey, the way M.Sonic did that is the same as Sonic Unleashed! I love that Werehog game! Hope the gameplay of it will be better!
so it’s either classic sonic gameplay or “press x to win” gameplay of sonic unleashed.
but i want to actually be able to control him in 3d.
honestley. i miss sonic adventure 2’s gameplay mechanics so much.
Mighty….Mighty could be in this…. 😀
So it´s based on Unleashed after all. That´s good for modern Sonic (it will be fun), but I expect more than 2D parts from Unleashed for classic Sonic. As always, the gameplay seems more focused on speed than any kind of platforming, and badniks seems to act like Unleashed ones, not like classic ones…
I love more characters being in, though.
Ummm is the hedgehog engine being used for this?
I wonder how the story will work out. Seems like a strange concept to me.
@krazeeKidd102: Say, aren’t you the one who made that pettition? Ya’know, the one that called Sega out on their crap with Sonic 4? Well, it looks like you and the rest of us are FINALLY getting what we wanted. These classic Sonic stages are EVERYTHING Sonic 4 SHOULD have been, and they even LOOK more beautiful.
@hsvelocity
Meh, there’s a few physics hiccups here and there (the most notable being classic Sonic looking like he slows down when he’s rolling), although just from looking, it’s hell of a lot better than what we got in Sonic 4. I just have to play the game to see. Or better yet, they need to release a demo for all of us to play.
…yeah, this comment is very late…
What has happened? The true 3D gameplay was last seen in Sonic Heroes, where Sonic games actually had a purpose to move backwards and platform. Ever since Unleashed, SEGA has been using the same model and on-rails gameplay. It is fun, but it lacks variety.
@DippedFudgeMonkey28 WAIT. You enjoy going backwards? In a Sonic game? Specifically Sonic Heroes? Weird.
@DippedFudgeMonkey28
+1.
[spam]YES I’m getting a PS3 to replace my broken, used Xbox so I can play this game in HD! :D[/spam]
