SEGA Europe Were “A Little Bit Opportunistic” But That Wasn’t “Necessarily Very Good”
SEGA Europe’s Jurgen Post took part in an interview with MCV, where he talked about SEGA as a whole. Among the topics was admitting, yet again, about SEGA’s pas.
“We were a little bit opportunistic, signing a lot of titles and doing things that were not necessarily very good,” acknowledges SEGA’s European boss Jurgen Post.
“There was a time when you could sell a lot of products, for example on Wii, but that market has gone. Today if you want to survive, you need to focus on quality. We want to create games that are very good and have a long tail.
“We scaled down to the very bare minimum. For us to restart, we needed to set-up a new strategy, and that is now paying off. So we can start to add more pillars to the structure.”

So are they admitting they used to just release shit games on the Wii that they knew people would buy anyway? LOL.
Also from the interview:
“Next year also marks Sonic’s return in the console space – following a period as a Nintendo exclusive.”
After all of those Sega’s ridiculous “Sonic sells better on Nintendo” excuses is very nice to see them excited for Sonic being multi-platform again.
Combine that Sonic Mania CE being on Amazon’s best seller list for all three platforms and you hopefully get Sega to commit to the reality that Sonic is mutltiplatorm and Classic Sonic sells more than just merchandise.
You know are the cool kid on the block when you have been a Sonic fan all this time and now everyone is realizing how incredibly awesome of video game character he truly is. B) Sonic Mania is Sonic’s best return to form since the Adventure series based on mere sales data alone and is well on its way to becoming one of the best, if not the best, paid title in the entire series. What an exciting time to be a Sonic fan and take part in this return to the glory days!
They are all top 10 best sellers currently! Now, I wonder just how many sales they will rack up a year from now…
Depends on how long they can maintain momentum with reveals, if the other new zones are as good as Studiopolis the hype train won’t be derailed. Mania is coming out at a time when the demand for true Classic 2D Sonic is piping hot and that’s being reflected in sales and word of mouth will be interesting to see how this all plays out when the game is finally out, I think it will play out similar to how the first two New Super Mario Bros.games blew up in sales and dwarfed those of the 3D Marios.
I just ran some very rough estimates using the NBA 2K series as a benchmark. Last year, the NBA 2K series (NBA 2K16) sold 4 million copies up through the first week of release. It went on to sell, per VGChartz, nearly 8 million copies to date. As of today, Sonic Mania is outselling NBA 2K17 on both consoles as of today. If it continues to outsell NBA 2K17 and NBA 2K17 sells as well as its predecessor, Sonic Mania might easily sell 10 million copies or more. This would mean two records for Mania: it would be crowned the best selling Sonic game in 20 years and it would also be second best selling 2D Sonic game of all-time. (For reference, Sonic 1 and 2 have sold 15 million and 6 million copies, respectively.) At any rate, the current trajectory (if hit or even missed by half) can only mean a mega influx of cash flow for the franchise, to be put to good use in funding Sonic Project ’17 and beyond!

If all this is true that would be indeed one for the record books. I’d love to see pre-order stats for Mania CE cause it sounds like pre-orders are entirely off the charts.
Oh hi, “more bullshit pandering about quality while awkwardly acknowledging the past as a never ending streak of failures crap monologue”! Long time no see! Include an overused Sonic meme as an attachment while you’re at it.
I’m sure that the people who invested money and spent dozens of hours appreciating the art design, overall challenge, storytelling, tone and atmosphere of those “bad bad, very bad Wii games” like the Wii port of Unleashed, the Storybook and Olympic games will take no offense. 😀
Guess what, Sega? You should totally re-release those regardless of the “Wiiyfied” motion controls (Unleashed has GC alternatives anyway)!
Stop beating yourself with the pointy stick already while saying “I’ve been bad” every second week and pull yourself together with creating something fresh and ambitious, damnit. These statements are worth nothing, but pity from the consumer side. SO? IT WAS A FRIGGIN DECADE AGO! GET OVER IT AND PROCEED TO THE FUTURE (without Classic Sonic if possible)!
Seriously, what should I expect from a company that only wishes to live in the ’90s non stop and considers all of it’s post 2001 work as “bad”? Why are we celebrating the 25th again? xD
This here is why i dont trust SEGA. I dont like them at all. They have this lazy ass, non commital, toolish way of looking at things. They are overly greedy for a company, looking to make a quick buck and milk the shit they make dry. They just said it here! They never cared for a whole decade at the quality of their products! The only reason they do now is cause they literally NEED it! And this shows in their narrow mentality. They are still playing safe. They have no touch in how to make Sonic a good game and just as well they dont have any confidence in themselves to do it. They dont deserve the franchise. What a horrid company
