PS2 Problems Persist in Europe
Johnny Wallbank of STJR sent me this observation on promotion of the PlayStation 2 and the Dreamcast late today:
Basically, there’s some additional tax that Sony will have to pay if their console is officially classed as ‘a console’, so Sony are combatting this by calling it a computer and chucking in a BASIC-based programming language in the launch consoles. Now, I think this is either an immensely funny or cheeky move on Sony’s part.
That is, if it happens at all. So far I’ve seen NO advertising for the PS2, other than TV shows covering the PS2 / X-Box (the Dreamcast and Gamecube are presumably ‘too inferior’ to be shown on TV), and there are only 135,000 units being shipped in England with some people not expecting consoles until Christmas or AFTER the New Year!
Sega has a promising lineup for Christmas, however, they stopped advertising on the (Terrestrial) TV last Christmas. That’s not good, however, I believe Sega have surpassed the number of TV adverts they released for the Saturn in England – around 3, so I guess SoE deserves SOME credit.
