UPDATE: Nintendo’s Sonic Release Schedule Clarified
You may remember last week when we told you about a press release from Nintendo Europe that clearly stated the intent to release three Sonic themed games exclusively on Nintendo systems before the year is out, including Sonic Lost World.
Now, it appears Nintendo has backed off from that remark some. According to German website Sega Portal, a clarification has been released by Nintendo Europe that clarifies Lost World is the only 2013 Sonic release confirmed so far.
“Rather, no start date has yet been set for two of the three titles,” the statement reads translated. “What is certain is that Sonic Lost World will release in 2013 exclusively for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.”
If anyone would know about release dates given the nature of this agreement with Sega, it would be Nintendo. Furthermore, this does not necessarily mean Nintendo and Sega will sit on the next Mario and Sonic Olympic venture to time better with the actual 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The first Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games actually released in October, well before the real-life Games began. So, it’s reasonable to assume two of the three games will be out this year or close to it–now, about that third…
UPDATE: We told you so–according to IGN’s Richard George in a Tweet sent out minutes ago, that third Sonic game will not be out this year:
Been busy but just re-confirmed with SEGA that the ‘third’ Sonic game in Nintendo’s three-game deal will not arrive in 2013.

Not sure what Nintendo Germany is talking about. Mario & Sonic Olympics, Sonic Lost World both on 3DS/Wii U. 4 SKUs. So… yeah. Not sure.

It became very obvious something was wrong when one of the games clearly states 2014.
mario and sonic at the 2012 (don’t feel like writing the rest ok) came out in 2011
What SonicGo1 said, and also, since the 2014 Winter Olympics are in February 2014, it makes more sense to release it at the Holiday season before the event.
…FUCK
I have a feeling they’ll all release in 2013 anyway. maybe early 2014…
……….
Why?
Actually this makes me wonder if the Mario and Sonic was even one OF the three.
I’m going to call it now and say it isn’t.
First of all they stress the exclusivity of the next three Sonic games- but the Olympic one would have been exclusive no matter what.
Secondly they released all the Olympic games well before the actual event- so it’s probably going to be released during the Holidays.
Thirdly the game was already a partnership between Nintendo and Sega WELL before this came to be… and it sold. They have no real reason to end it.
Honestly I think it’s UNreasonable to assume that the Olympic game is even a part of this deal. It would be more likely that the 3DS version of Lost World counts as the second, and since it’s under the same title that’s highly doubtful.
So I’m going to call it now. Sonic and Mario at the Olympic games is NOT a part of the 3.
Exactly, they may have mean “financial year” which means early 2014 would qualify.
The third might release in 2014. We still don’t know what it is, but they’re certainly holding back on it. M&S 4 will definitely release this year, though.
S0L would be fired for leaking a Nintendo related project like that and he sure as hell knows that, the tweets haven’t been deleted despite everyone making a big fuss other them that screams he wasn’t being serious.
Not a big deal to me. Not really looking forward to any of these games. I do wonder what the third one is, though.
lol it’s an olympic game and racing game …does anyone actually give a damn ?
The M&S Olympics games got their very high sales numbers because it was natural fit for anyone who bought a Wii for Wii Sports. If you haven’t noticed the people who bought a Wii for Wii Sports aren’t buying Wii Us either because they don’t care about it or because Nintendo has screwed up it’s marketing beyond belief. I guess the market for this game is now just kids and people who buy all the Mario sports games, anyone who cared for the Mario vs. Sonic aspect of it is probably got fed up with the series years ago.
Mario Kart on the other hand has damn near universal appeal.
Assuming the third game doesn’t come out this year, wouldn’t that harm the credibility of your source regarding that third game? As stated in the article, it’s apparently is “being made with the idea of taking Mario Kart’s U place until it gets released, next 2014”.
It’s a fair point. I suspect all will be clearer come E3 next week.

To be honest, I think the IGN tweets put your source under further scrutiny.
Eh–that’s why they’re labeled rumor!
-T
IGN has never been that good themselves either haha.
It will interesting to see if the rumors about Nintendo being hit hard by underestimating the cost and time involved in making PS3/360 level games is true, count how many games they announce coming out year this for Wii U. If it’s true then it’s no surprise that they’re latching unto a very Mario looking Sonic game.
Noooooo.
@SSJ – All of the games that come to Wii U in the summer through fall, I think, should definitely have been released earlier. I think the reason titles are coming out very slowly right now and some are being pushed back is because Nintendo is learning the ropes with high-end graphics and HD. They’ll get used to it at one point, and then they will be able to start releasing games sooner.
It’s not the first time they’re releasing a new console. I think they’re taking their time for good solid games and Nintendo is probably giving SEGA room to do that.
Well there goes the “Mario and Sonic Racing replacing MK Wii U” rumor. Which was obviously fake.
lopl: I don’t think anyone said the third game was meant to be a replacement, rather it would be more a stopgap leading to the next Mario Kart. You can have a game release in, say, March or April, and then have the next MK release for the Holidays so they don’t compete with one another.
Granted, the way Sega likes to release things, I too can’t see any third Sonic game being out in the first half of 2014–unless it’s a digital release.

Actually, console Mario Karts have usually released in the Spring, so the third Sonic game might not even be a racing game…
Not really Mario Kart Wii didn’t have to come out at holiday because the Wii was healthy and in it’s prime, Wii U on the other hand needs titles to get people to care about it and move units this holiday season.
3DS managed to pick up because of the price drop, a decent stream of games and despite having mindshare sucked away by phones/iPads it has zero competition in the handheld space the Vita is a 32X level failure at this point making the 3DS a very safe buy for anyone, Wii U doesn’t have that luxury it’s going to be eaten alive by the next gen zeitgeist unless they take drastic measures and chances. I think all the console makers are setting up the perfect environment for someone like Apple to swoop in and disrupt everything again, Nintendo might have no idea how to recapture lighting in a bottle right now but Apple sure as hell does.
@Update – That’s good to hear. I’m hoping that the third Sonic game gets enough development time. I feel like it’s going yo be Sonic Rush 3, I don’t know why. Nah, it couldn’t, because SEGA released the 3 Sonic Rushes (Colors counted) for DS at their own will.
Now I’m starting to believe that Nintendo vs. Sonic Racing game.
Double tweet post?
Cookies: Whoops–my mistake. I’ve fixed it now. -T
…………NOT SO FUCK
What keeps happening to my posts under this new posting system? Half the time they show up until a refresh, at which point they vanish.
In any case, lets try this again. While it’s a far off shot, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the next Mario Kart being a crossover with Sumo’s ASRT. Sumo’s current project is currently listed as TBA with an E rating, with no information on the platform, and Nintendo has been very silent about the new Mario Kart title save for some whispers that it will be really interesting.
I’m not saying there’s a high chance, but I am saying let’s not write it off either.
Sonic Adventure 3 = third game (for Wii U) ?
It should also be multiplatform on PS3, Vita, X360, and PC.
The key to happiness is to lower your expectations.
The 3rd Sonic title is Nintendo exclusive man, sorry. Stop being so desperate. You won’t see your precious Sonic Adventure 3 in a while.
SA3 was released on multiple platforms in 2006. It sucked.
@True Radiant Free – Sonic Adventure 3 should just stay on Nintendo, like the rest always have…besides, SEGA still needs to tune the gameplay and fix those glitches, and bringing it on multiple platforms won’t help it. Who knows what Sonic game it could be at this point.
We could end up getting a ColorsGenerations, where both were in development simultaneously but released a year apart.
…us Wii U/3DS owners could end up with another adventure Sonic game.
“Who knows what Sonic game it could be at this point.”
“…us Wii U/3DS owners could end up with another adventure Sonic game”
Guess which mindset I recommended you stick to until we know more.
It’s already been what 2 weeks? and people are already playing mental gymnastics to explain why Precious Brand Title 3 is surely going to come out.
You know, even though it won’t happen, having a Mario Kart X Sonic All-Stars Racing game would be the best thing to happen to both series, if Sonic’s game play mechanics from that game were used, and, if Nintendo handled most of the programming(No more Sonic & All-stars Glitching Transformed!).
I wonder what this 3rd game will be…
Ricardo says sa3 should be on Nintendo lie the rest have? I have SADX on my ps3 and I have the actual copy of two for my dreamcast. The adventure games are not exclusive to Nintendo. They just got a hold of then first after DC went down.
Also didn’t the SA2 on XBLA/PSN sell very well and top the charts? If SEGA were to ever make a SA3 they’d probably know the people that played it more than a decade ago probably didn’t stick to Nintendo consoles exclusively in the following years.
