James Marsden Will Star In The Sonic Movie
The last 24 hours have been crazy for Sonic movie news. And now, Variety has confirmed who will be the star of the Sonic movie:
“Westworld’s” James Marsden will star in Paramount’s live-action/animation hybrid movie “Sonic the Hedgehog,” an adaptation of the classic video game, sources tell Variety.

“James Marsden? Who’s this again?” *Googles* *Sees Picture of Hop 2011* “OHhh NOOooo.. OHHH NNOOOO!” “No please! Don’t let history repeat itself!”
LMAO! That movie is on Netflix, I saw some chunks of it, I think it perfectly represents what they SHOULDN’T do with the Sonic movie XD
Hey he was also the 2nd voice of Chester McBadbat
No, that’s actually Jason Marsden. James is best known for portraying Cyclops in the X-Men film series.
It’s a pretty common mistake. Either way, I don’t know much about the guy to really form an opinion. The only thing that’s kind of bugging me is the idea that Sonic has to be taped to a celebrity name in order for them to even think up a plot. Even as a Paramount movie it’s still sounding like a lot of Sony movies, so I’m still fairly concerned about this film’s final quality.
I’ll admit after seeing the last Smurfs film from Sony, I wasn’t all that worried about what they would do with Sonic. They are actually fantastic animator’s and BFX artists so I believed that with Marza Animation planet’s assistance they might have a winner on their hands. There was also the involvement of Tim Miller who heads up Blur studio who we know nowadays for epic game trailers like Assassin’s Creed, the Division and the like but amongst the Sonic community would be known for the CG cutscenes and trailers for Shadow the Hedgehog and 06… I was pretty excited in that regard.
Now we have Paramount working on the film, it is objectively speaking in better hands but I was pretty worried as soon as the live action angle was announced. Truth be told I’ve found some enjoyment in each of the five Transformers films so far but I know that critically speaking they’re not very well received. Now that said, they’ve been involved with other live action films such as Charlotte’s Web and more recently Monster Trucks but again, very mixed reception.
Now, I haven’t the remotest idea where they’re going with this film but I’m hoping it will be somewhat decent.
This fan base is resilient but only to an extent, I don’t think it will make it through a major crash in any form of media this time.
I’m effectively counting on the animation and VFX team to do their level best with this film, Marza planet is still involved as far as I’m aware and they may possibly have the aid of Western studios with this project. The likes of Blur Studios, Industrial Light and Magic, The Mill, Moving Picture Company, Weta Digital or even ImageWorks could provide assistance if it’s a big enough project, but we’ll see.
Aside from that, I’m counting on the director and writers to deliver a good story. I know we have our debates in and amongst each other on whether or not Sonic requires or even deserves a story for his games; a simple story vs a deep one, comedy vs seriousness and so on but this is a film so the audience does need something to be attached to. A large sense of character is often a part of that. With the general bias against anything CGI these days they need something that will hold their attention and not get them to nitpick on visuals.
Additionally, it would be much appreciated if the good people at SEGA and Sonic Team had a hand in the production of the film. Not stiflingly so, just enough that the core aspects of Sonic we’ve come to appreciate shine through in the film. Wishful thinking at this stage I know but I’m a hopeful kind of guy.
Anyway that’s just my two cents on the matter, I don’t at all mind James Marsden, I’ll just have to see how he adapts to whatever tone the film has. There’s only two things I’m somewhat curious about now; how they’ll adapt the Sonic/Sonic cast design to fit a real world setting and the film’s musical score.
The former I’m interested in because of how Adventure 1, 2, 06 and to a lesser extent, Sonic X did this, and how ill received they were due to it. I think films like Peter Rabbit and other live action films with human and unreal character interaction just never disconnected me from the experience, regardless of the clear distinction in art style, it was made clear that this was normal in their world, which was the same vibe I got from Sonic games with human characters. I know Unleashed got less flack because of the unified art style and that the Eggman argument doesn’t work for the same reason,
but again, I think it’s something to think about.
In regards to the music I’m curious as to how they’ll balance it. We’ve had various styles of music in the games over the years and big screen films usually have studio recorded acoustically produced soundtracks with a range of subtle to bombastic moments, so the prospect of how they’ll adapt scores designed to be looped into flowing transitional pieces is very interesting to me.
Again, just something I’m intrigued by. I’m both optimistic and easy to please, so if film’s half decent, I’ll be okay. Of course, that’s just one guys opinion, I’d love to know what everyone else thinks.
