IGN's Sonic Unleashed Blog Talks Werehog
Thanks to a heap of News Tips bringing this to our attention but the fastest of the fast was this time was reader Crazee. IGN’s insightful Sonic Unleashed blog was updated this week once again by Yoshihisa Hashimoto, the director of Sonic Unleashed. This time he wanted to explain more about the Werehog.
Ever since the first leaked images of the creature the general feeling is that the Werehog sections of the game will be a waste of time and detract from the awesome looking Sonic action stages. Yoshihisa Hashimoto tries to explain how he wants the Werehog to be an integral part of the gameplay to draw in new people to the Sonic franchise.
What our goal was, then, was to find a way to get people unfamiliar with Sonic to become familiar with Sonic, to see what made him so fun, and to get to experience that particular style of action game that’s so indicative of “Sonic.”
Of course, in the process of making Sonic appealing to people who weren’t familiar with him, we also wanted to be careful that we didn’t alienate people who were familiar with Sonic, by turning him into something completely unrecognizable with “Sonic the Werehog.”
To it’s credit the Werehog concept adds a new style of gameplay to the series while keeping Sonic the focus. The last thing we needed was another throwaway playable character with a new gameplay style. Indeed in the blog Yoshihisa Hashimoto talks about trying to get more quality out of fewer characters which is something the series really needs to address.
Finally the blog update includes an 11 part guide to the Werehogs abilities, collectibles and enemies.
…we like to think that we’ve created a fun experience for both children and adults, for beginners and for hardcore gamers alike. We really hope that we’ve made a game that will satisfy both long-time Sonic devotees, as well as people who are getting to know Sonic for the very first time.
Check out the blog entry here and let us know what you think in the comments below.
Ummm didn’t I send this, like, 2 days ago? lol
I sent it ….as soon as it was posted up.lol And to show how stupid I was, I send the tip in before reading the blog. So I saw the title”Night of the werehog”…and sent a tip saying the blog was ABOUT the “Night of the Werehog” presuming it might be news about the movie.
Either way, there’s nothing new there really. Watching the recent videos…you can see how important precise platforming performance(alliteration!) is needed. And I miss that in Sonic games. I think the levels will be fun.
