IDW Sonic: Year Two To Have “More Villains, More Adventures, & A New Threat”
We have gotten our first information on what the second year of the IDW Sonic era will have.
IDW announced at NYCC that Sonic The Hedgehog #13 will be an extra-length issue to bring readers up to speed leading into their second year of publishing. “Year two is going to be huge for Sonic,” says editor David Mariotte. “We are upping the stakes with more villains, more adventures, and a new threat that’ll loom over the whole 2019 calendar!”
To start, Sonic takes a break after the momentous Battle of Angel Island. When Tails receives a mysterious tip that a friend has disappeared, he and Sonic race off into a brand-new adventure that’ll put them face-to-face and nose-to-nose with some old foes!
We don’t know what that “new threat” will be.

As a fanbase let’s be honest for a moment; IDW Sonic has overall been a major disappointment in its first year. I have never seen an officially recognized part of Sonic comic content be so vanilla, boring and predictable in how its storytelling has been constructed.
And yet considering who’s in charge writing, editing, inking and coloring, IDW Sonic will get praised no matter what. That’s the Sonic fanbase hivemind way of thinking for you.
It mirrors the modern games really, the whole thing is constrained in being like that bland nothing that it’s no way that it’s like that way. The Archie comic could fall back using whatever elements of it’s lore that weren’t retconned away along with the classics including stuff like the AOSTH cartoon and game gear and arcade games. The tone very much seems stuck in being like those short tie in comics they’ve always been doing which simply isn’t compelling enough.
The IDW series might have a bit of a weak introduction, but nearly every series starts out on a bit of an awkward note since the writer is trying to get a handle on things. The new comic is entirely different from the previous series so Ian has to find a new method of representing the narrative. But give it enough time and the series will eventually find its footing.
Plus, even at his weakest, I’d still take Ian’s writing over whoever SEGA seems to hire for their games.
I’m really looking forward to what these new villains will be.
Im wondering who this “friend” is that is missing.
The “new threat” could be anything. Hmm.
