Gears of War Sells 3 Million Copies

In just 10 weeks, the futuristic Xbox 360 shooter has topped 3 million units sold since its release in early November. As amazing as that is, what is most surprising is that Gears of War was the third best selling game of 2006 behind Madden NFL 07 (August release) for the Sony PlayStation 2 and New Super Mario Bros. (May release) for the Nintendo DS handheld.

Two new downloadable multiplayer maps were made available two weeks ago for free and have been already downloaded by 750,000 people.

“Like blockbuster titles from Microsoft’s Halo franchise and the Grand Theft Auto and Zelda franchises, Gears of War is tracking to be one of the best-selling video games of all time and has established itself as the most successful new IP of the next generation,” said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing, Interactive Entertainment Business Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft Corp.

Epic Games’ Gears of War is rated M for mature and only available for the Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console.
