Gamespot: 3.5/10 for Unleashed 360

This week isn’t really going too well for Sonic Unleashed with critic reception. Maybe you thought the worst has already came. For those who thought that… I’m sorry.

Gamespot’s review of the 360 edition of Unleashed is scored as the second worst Sonic game next to Sonic Genesis. To the people who started the petition for IGN to re-review Sonic Unleashed, you just might want to start another because the game was scored with a very poor, 3.5/10.

Unlike other critics, Gamespot actually didn’t find Sonic’s stages that good:

The Sonic levels don’t fare any better than the lousy werehog parts. Your goal is to run as quickly as possible to the finish line, but the camera is rarely able to give you an optimal view and the controls are far too loose to provide the pinpoint accuracy you’ll need. These technical problems mean you’ll have to memorize stages before you can breeze through them. The game is not responsive enough to allow you to consistently avoid obstacles the first time you encounter them, so you’ll find yourself repeatedly plowing headfirst into spikes and falling down countless bottomless pits before you finally know where each obstacle lays ahead of time.

And if you were expecting them to enjoy the Werehog stages, think again:

The werehog levels are extremely tedious. The levels are evenly divided between platforming and fighting, but both elements offer more frustration than excitement.

The Good:

  • Looks good.

The Bad:

  • Monotonous combat
  • Imprecise platforming
  • Inept camera restricts your view
  • Tons of control issues
  • Horrendous level design

  10. Hmmm…this review. The contents of that review are such that you don’t have any real reason to call it biased. It is not biased.

    Rather, it is ridiculously and abnormally stupid!

    But hey, I still love the game. I will just laugh at Gamespot like I did with IGN.

Hmm, I have to kind of agree with SOME of the points they made, you really have to know the levels before you can really have fun with them, but they seem a lot more sore about it than they should be. Skyscraper Scamper in particular. Or it’s possible that they somehow didn’t figure out that the Act 2/3’s are supposed to that hard.

    It basically seems to me that if you go into Unleashed trying to like it, you’ll have a legitimately better experience than if you’re expecting it to be terrible. If you’re expecting to hate the Werehog, you’re going to try to run through those levels as fast as you can and you’ll constantly not have enough medals.

    It’s the whole “rating this worse than Sonic 2006” thing. The minute you’re harsher on Sonic Unleashed than that game is the minute I stop trusting your review.

  20. This is getting really…really stupid…what’s up with America and hating sonic games?! This is why SEGA barely puts any effort into sonic games because what they get? The worst of the worst comments for their games that took over 3 years to design and program. They have no right to bash the game like that. I do agree they must view the good and the bads of the game but it has gone too far. No wonder why SEGA doesnt want us to have some of their exclusive japan only games…
    Plus, with these “wondeful” comments, they are not motivating SEGA to make better games. =/
    What’s up with these people now? Sonic doesnt deserve a lower than 7 on any game. *sighs*

  27. What I think the problem is now is that reviewers are all opinions, opinions, opinions. We don’t want their god damn opinions, we want FACTS! Does the camera work? Yes! Does it have tons of control issues? No!
    For pete’s sake, a five year old could do a better review than these sites.

  30. This start to look like competition to see who can give the lowest rating. so if there are any other reviews i expect that they give it a 2.5 mainly because they may win a keyring

  32. You know what? I completely agree, and here’s why:

    It’s so difficult to review this particular game because you’re dealing with terrible werehog stages, and relatively great by comparison daytime stages.

    However, the more I play these daytime levels, the more I realize how uninteresting and uninspired they are. You aren’t actually playing the game, with all the dash pads, half the time it’s playing itself. This is not how a sonic game is supposed to play. It’s not about speed, it’s about using momentum to get over the next loop or half pipe and being rewarded with better routes, etc. The daytime levels had NONE of that.

    The werehog stages get an F, and the still mediocre daytime stages get a D, which averages, in my opinion, somewhere around a 3.5. If everyone continued to let Sonic Team off the hook with 7.0s, they’d never make a great game.

  33. And for the record, good camera and controls should be a standard, a game shouldn’t be considered average because it has those, since they are to be expected. Just because the last few Sonic games were horrific and overrated doesn’t mean this still isn’t a bad game in general.

  35. What makes me laugh about this is the fact they put other sites review scores next to it & all of them (except IGN’s) are good to great, so who plays like c**p now gamespot lol

  37. In short, that review sucked. Not because it gave the game a low score, but because of lies and blowing things out of proportion. GameSpot lost what little respect I had for them.

    Actually, it IS about speed. Not so much the momentum part.

I am really surprised…i though GameSpot had brain meet in their brains,but it looks like they have cocoNUTS in their brain…IGN gave a low score and GameSpot give a low score so they don’t get behind.Seriously,does GameSpot honestly think that by following IGN’s opinion they will be a “true rating site”?GameSpot should have their OWN opinion of the game.THAT score is absolutely equal to giving Sonic Adventure 2 ,a 4.0 out of 10,which is just a foolish move…I wonder what is GameSpot’s next move,or should i say IGN’s next move…

    how……how dare you say the day levels are bad…..OMG…i haven’t had a problem with the dame camera yet….plus i beat it so practically..THERE ARE NO DAMN CAMERA PROBLEMS

    the only real bad thing i actually accoutered was the triple amount of time you play as the werehog than sonic..

    Gamespot and IGN need to fire who they got and get some POSITIVE reviews…

    GOD. CALM DOWN. Just because Gamestop didn’t enjoy it, doesn’t mean you guys can’t :\ So go ahead and do so.
    They had the right idea, though, the daytime stages could use a lot of work, the nighttime stages are actually pretty fun, even the the werehog is a bit laggy between attacks. And the controls could use some work…
