Full “Sonic 3D in 2D” Fan Game Released
The long running joke in the Sonic community is that fan games never get finished. So when a fan game is seen through to completion–which happens more often than you think–it’s a true testament to the developer’s dedication.
It’s especially unique when those complete works are different takes on classic Sonic staples, and Sotaknuck’s Sonic 3D in 2D, which reimagines Sonic’s first 3D foray as a proper 2D platformer, is no different. The fan game was released earlier this week, and version 1.01 with several bug fixes went live on Thursday.
Many of the original game’s gimmicks have been faithfully represented throughout all of the game’s detailed stages, and there are plenty of additional surprises in store for players. You won’t be collecting Flickies, but you will be navigating through some clever stage design and strong visuals. And it’s controller compatible.
Were we in the heart of SAGE season, Sonic 3D in 2D would be in the running for best in show. It absolutely should be on your must-play list, setting a high standard for other community-created classic remakes currently in the pipeline.

Better than I could ever do. All I can think is “who asked for this?” but it does look like a lot of thought went into recreating some of the key elements.
