Flynn Seeks Input for “Lost Hedgehog Tales”
With a whirlwind past two years in the Sonic comic universe now mostly behind, current principal writer Ian Flynn now wants to do something special for loyal readers.
On December 19th, Flynn revealed his intention to showcase Lost Hedgehog Tales, a write-up of ideas he had considered for 2012 and 2013 before Archie Comics’s lawsuit against former writer Ken Penders changed everything.
According to Flynn on the Bumbleking forums, Lost Hedgehog Tales will be a perusal of what could have been:
(The project is) an informal overview of storylines I pitched or was planning to pitch before things got all… dramatic. There will not be any manuscript material, nor any original documents sent to Archie. Think of it as me pulling a box out of the attic, going through its contents, and telling you about each thing. Those “things” will include:
– the original ending to the King Naugus Arc
– Mecha Sally’s fate
– both versions of “Endangered Species”
– the aforementioned plans that would’ve taken us through STH#300
– Hershey’s role
– …and more!
The project will likely be released around Summertime, at no cost, and nothing included in the work will impact the current official canon in the published comics. Flynn considered and then ruled out taking donations toward the effort.
As to whether his superiors at Archie knows of the project:
I don’t know – I haven’t asked. This is all me. Since this material isn’t being used by them, and a fair bit of it was never shown to them, they’re not really involved. This is just me doing something for the fans. An informal, unlicensed, non-profit, unofficial thing for fun.
Your help is needed to jog Ian’s memory on what to include in Lost Hedgehog Tales; you can head here to offer your two cents.
Intriguing, and not for profit to boot… Wish I could help, but I’m pretty sure other fans have it all covered by now. My best wishes to Mr. Flynn, and the best hopes for this project.
And a note to Mr. Flynn from me: Don’t worry Ian, I understand that things were out of your hands, and you’ve done a bang up job with what you had to work with so far. Keep up the good work.
I must say that’s extremely nice of him, and a lot of people may see some closure even in just seeing what he had planned for the old universe. I haven’t exactly been sold on the new direction (it just hasn’t grabbed or wowed me yet, but hopefully that’ll change before my sub runs out) so this is good news for someone like me.
Man if someone did a fan made comic of these tales online and continued after 300 with original stories, like sonic the comic, that would be amazing. As is I’m totally interested reading these and giving feedback. What web site will it be on?
Now this is how you treat loyal fans and people who pay your bills, and it’s not for profit too. Unlike Penders, where everything he ever considers has to be for cash and at the expense of his past fan base. Ian will go places that are well out of Penders reach that’s for sure. A little courtesy and reciprocated respect from creator to fan goes a long, long way and ends up with equal if not more being sent right back from fan to creator and keeps the money for their paid projects flowing.
I fucking love Ian Flynn
^This.

Thank you my good man
Now this is interesting, I’ll keep my eye on this.
Thats super awesome. But pleas pleas pleas dont get yourself fired over this ian. Last thing we need is more drama.
Ehh, and how will this be made available if it gets done at all as he still hasn’t asked his superiors at Archie if it’s okay.
Um….it will be available on his personal forum/site bumbleking. I thought that was obvious. And Ian and the article says that it should be ok as Archie is not gonna print any of this stuff so it’s the equivalent of fan fiction or a “what if” from the writer himself. Believe it or not Ian is not the first creative to spill the beans on lost storylines the companies are not paying for to have printed.
Name one other writer who has done it. Also, the whole thing depends on what Archie says about it since it involves their copyrighted stuff.
As for those who have given insight into storylines that have not gone originally intended, former editor/writer Glenn Greenberg of Spider-man’s Clone Saga fame is a pretty big one. Difference here though is Ian still works for Archie. Hell, Ian has done similar behind the scenes goodies like entire scripts be revealed and those were actually used in the books. But it will be up to Ian if he thinks he is not crossing any hairs, and if he is Archie will kindly just tell him he can’t do it, more or less. At this point he is going forward with it so I’m not complaining.
Good old Flynn! ^^
