I’m happy to see Cream and Cheese again. I thought they were banned from being used in the comic. I’m surprised to see Gmerl on a cover again. I guess he’s going to actually be used this time.
Yes thank you thank you thank you thank you IDW comic for adding Cream and Cheese and Gemerl in the Sonic comic I love you
Ugh, these comics used to be more mature. But, now it feels like a Saturday morning cartoon now.
I miss the politics, romance, the story not solely focusing on Sonic–but the characters around him without his involvement all the time. Maybe Ian was just good at fixing Pender’s story this whole time, cause his original stories aren’t doing it for me.
Sonic? Mature? LOL
The Sonic comics were at their worst when they tried to get “mature”. The shoddy romance, laughable political drama and focus on weird Echidnas or characters who doesn’t even feel like real Sonic characters… Those were the Archie Sonic comics at their worst.
Holy shit, we have complete opposite views…
Also, the comic was financially at it’s worst ironically after the reboot. Nearly every issue there was a decline in sales. So, no. Post-reboot wasn’t the worst since it had the hugest crowd the comic had.
I also miss the political drama that were in the older Archie comics. It added an interesting complexity to the narrative.
By “at its worst” I meant creatively, rather than financially. The older comics selling more copies has a lot more to do with how the interest on comics as a medium in general declined a lot due to multiple factors than quality.
It’s not uncommon for good, contemporary comic book issue to sell worse than a subpar issue from decades ago.
The final issues on Ken Penders’ tenure almost felt like a weird, bastardized SatAM sequel that almost feels ashamed of Sega’s Sonic, where awkward politics, stolen Superman and Star Trek plot points and romantic relationships drama aren’t a thing.
That being said, I dislike Sega’s draconian mandates which gained strength after the reboots. They severely cripples the storytelling potential and effectively prevents “canon” characters’ development from really going forward.
That’s incredibly subjective. If you personally think the comics are good now, good on you.
I think they’re basic. Predictable. And lacking the interesting complex narrative it used to have.
I didn’t care for Pender’s run. But, Ian taking over was the best the comic got for me.
And. Technically. The height of its popularity. And no, people did actually quit the comic after the reboot. I’ve seen multiple videos like on SonicComicWorld explaining why they were dropping the comic.
It was just because comics were dropping as a whole (though it played a role).
Still no Sally Acorn…
