E3 2017: Sonic Forces Trailer Up, Metal Sonic/Chaos Return, New Villain Confirmed
Sonic Forces trailer uploaded. My jaw is on the floor.
Burbank, California — June 13, 2017 — Today, SEGA® revealed Sonic Force’s exciting new key art along with the latest trailer. The trailer features an all-star cast of Sonic villains and introduces a brand-new powerful, mysterious enemy, Infinite. Infinite joins Eggman’s evil group of henchmen in Sonic Forces which includes Chaos, Metal Sonic, Shadow and Zavok who have already taken over the world and are ready to create next-level panic and disorder.
While more about Infinite will be revealed in the future, other villains making an appearance in today’s trailer include:
Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik: The original Mad Genius Doctor, and Sonic’s nemesis. After countless failed attempts, his plan to take over the world seems to finally be succeeding.
Chaos: An ancient power thought to have been quelled after the events of Sonic Adventure. His return is a mystery.
Shadow: Once called “The Ultimate Life Form,” Shadow fights for his own reasons. He appeared in Sonic Adventure 2.
Metal Sonic: One of the evil doctor’s most powerful creations, Metal Sonic first appeared in Sonic CD, and has returned at a few key moments since.
Zavok: The leader of a group known as The Zeti, Zavok is a powerful warrior who was first seen in Sonic Lost World.
The official Sonic Forces villains trailer can be found here. The key art as well as a new Sonic Forces concept art can be found here.
From June 13-15, E3 attendees can stop by either the SEGA/Atlus booth at West Hall #4312 or Sega of Europe booth at West Hall #4300 for hands-on opportunities to check out new content from both Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania.
Sonic Forces will be available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this Holiday.

MEPHILES IS BACK
OOOOOH
This about to get real. Maybe that’s why they call it sonic forces. Forces of good vs the forces of evil.
This new villain has Metal Sonic, Chaos, Zavok AND Shadow by his side?! Must have been brainwashing in Shadow’s case.
Nope. SEGA PR says he fights “for his own reasons”.
I mean, his own reason may be he is brainwashed, never know.
At least I hope so, because at this point I’d rather keep Shadow on as the edgy good guy instead of having him regress into the super edgy anti-hero/villain role again, at least because Sonic Boom’s attempt to do so kind of left a bad taste in my mouth.
Or at the very least, they better have a really REALLY damn good reason for making him an antagonist again, otherwise I’m pretty done with Iizuka, he’s been nothing but a retcon machine so far. 😛
The new bad guy promised he could revive Maria if Shadow joined him.
@ Soyummy69: …you know what, that’s actually a pretty decent and reasonable idea, I’d buy that. I mean, it would still kind of go against the idea that Shadow has decidedly moved on from that tragedy, but the tricky thing with loved ones is that the prospect of bringing them back is always a little too tempting, so it could probably still work. Better that than something stupidly 2-dimensional like “This was I’ll finally beat you Sonic!” or something uninspired like that.
My hunch is that Sonic never stopped any of the plans involving these guys — or the Death Egg, for that matter (hence the Death Egg Robots).
Because he’s netrual. That’s why.
I canNOT wait for this game! This trailer has won E3 for me by a landslide. Not even remotely exaggerating or joking about that. I watched it on loop since it came out and…wow!
Can’t wait. At all.
What if this is a timeline in which Shadow beat Sonic in Shadow the Hedgehog? With Sonic out of commission Eggman could’ve easily taken over the world. I swear if Sega ends up doing that it would make sense but at the same mean we would actually have to acknowledge the other multiple ending possibilities from that game.
My jaw is in the floor as well, this looks amazing, its hitting all the right notes to me, if anything I’m a little wary of Zavok’s inclusion but to be fair he was the best written character in Lost World, also I was thinking it is a little strange that Blaze hasn’t showed up but hopefully she appears further down the story.
Now I really want to know what are Shadow’s intentions of helping “Eggman Forces”.
I hate the Zeti. I felt like all they did was talk big game but at least Zavok talked big game well. I never expected him to be a recurring character and was even surprised to see him and party games. Though I guess that way you can see just how much he’s physically similar to Bowser. I’m sure he’ll seem cooler along side shadow, metal and chaos since they were big deals in their own games. I doubt he’ll be treated quite the same as in their own games but even if this is a colors/lost world style story writing I think the concept is at least interesting.
Sorry, I mean surprised to see Zavok in party games as well, and that I don’t think Metal, Chaos and Shadow will be treated quite the same as before.
Why does this remind me of Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans?
They’re just keeping in line with the “OC Do Not Steal” mentality.
Needless to say, I’m more excited for this game now than I have been before, and I was still being cautiously optimistic for a while too. I still got concerns and all that, but so far what I’ve seen has been, at worst, pretty serviceable as a Modern Sonic title goes. It’s not a “pro-fest” like Generations was (despite all of the claims that they are taking the best from that title…just seems a tiny bit watered down if you ask me…) but it still works for having a more diverse range of experiences in this game.
And more importantly (at least, for me anyway), it feels like they might FINALLY be getting the story nailed down with this one. Still too soon to say, but between the vibes each level has, the dialogue bits between characters in each zone, and the trailer implications so far, it feels like they are starting to get a better handle on how to portray Sonic, at least a slightly more serious story anyway. I still need to see cutscenes to make a definite conclusion that they have finally fixed the one consistently crippling issue of the Iizuka Era, the lack of a cohesive and well-developed or thought-out story, but so far it’s been giving off the right kind of signs. In fact, I’m starting to get Archie Comics vibes from this trailer alone, that’s pretty encouraging in my book (ha, book).
Then again, I remember Lost World’s trailers giving me similar feelings too, so you never can know what you’re getting, positive or negative, until you actually play the game yourself in full. So as always, I’m back to preaching my same old shtick, final judgments should be reserved for the final release and all that. It is looking fairly promising so far and at this point I only want to see more and more to show that I really am going to be getting my money’s worth with this title. Mania is of course looking to be a much more encouraging and safely-assured success at this point, but as far as this game goes, I’d say it’s starting to get fairly close to Generations-levels of promising for me. Like, not exactly 1st place, but it’s getting pretty close to 2nd as long as it keeps this up.
Don’t muck this up guys. PLEASE.
Hey, you just gonna enjoy the modern sonic games. You don’t know whats gonna happen once you beat the whole game.
Um, I never said I wouldn’t be enjoying the classic Sonic games either. I literally said Mania is pretty much a guaranteed success, lol. And no, I don’t know how the game is going to be until I beat the whole thing, that’s the whole point of what I’ve been saying. I literally need to play the whole game before I give a final assessment. Sonic Generations looked pretty fun, and I couldn’t know I was right to think so until I played the game myself. Likewise, Sonic Lost World looked…interesting, but I didn’t get to feel disappointed by it until I actually played it the whole way through. Whether I like the game or not, I believe in actually experiencing the thing and giving it a chance, even if it’s a classic game too.
Can I just say this though? Putting aside any opinions of what the overall quality of this title will actually be like, CHAOS LOOKS FREAKING AWESOME IN THE HEDGEHOG ENGINE 2! Like, he looked great as Perfect Chaos in Generations, so it’s really nice to see his other iconic form looking just as great in a modern Sonic game. I really hope we get to see some interesting things done with him in this game, like transformations and all that, I REALLY want to see how cool all of that looks with this model and graphics and all that.
Omg…. I really hope we get Chaos boss fights like in SA1! Like with his weird stretching and energy attacks! It can be new. Each boss of him in SA1 was different so they can make something new. And Metal Sonic… oh boy the possibilities. As for Shadow… makes me wonder which side Rouge is on.
I feel like she could side with with. Kinda makes me think of Black Widow and Captain America: Civil War.
That WOULD be interesting, but it really depends on how much of the legacy and history of the series the writers actually care about. 2006 did show that Rouge had an unwavering sense of loyalty and friendship towards Shadow, but on the other hand that story was retconned and Iizuka and the writers would be more likely to completely ignore that fact. It really depends on how they handle it from this point on. But if they really did go in the direction of Rouge’s loyalty being thrown into question, that would make for an interesting and compelling character arc, even if it did ultimately result in her just trying to bring him back to his senses anyway.
And yeah, I’d love to see all of that stuff done with Chaos, there’s just so many cool possibilities you could do with him now that he’s a thing again. If he does get other forms again, I’d love to see if they kind of handled him similar to Super Buu’s transformations in DBZ, where each form he takes makes him look progressively closer and closer to his Perfect form. Like he’d start getting more and more of that blue scaley “skin” and glowy green spikes and all of that with each form and would have other more monstrous details as well. And yeah, having better effects in this engine will make him look that much cooler as well. They’ve opened up a great toy chest here, they just need to use the toys they have properly and in a creative way.
Well this is sorta implied by their character placements. Rouge is always Shadow’s partner unless he does something actually evil, and I think part of that is that they know each other the best. Especially after the amnesia. I think Rouge mY side with evil but only to an extent, or side with good the whole way through. She’s a double agent but she’s ultimately a protagonist. Shadow is as well. So there’s definitely a reason he’s there. And Chaos, who is also a protagonist. I bet Tikal’s spirit is wondering what the hell happened. lol last I inferred, Chaos was helping guard the master emerald, which is what I ASSUMED was why Knuckles had more freedom onward.
But even then, Graff may write the script, but the structure of the game as a whole obviously include elements that many people were involved with making the decision on. I don’t Graff can just add Chaos and Metal Sonic if he doesn’t even know who they are. So he must know and how they’re implemented must have some sort of guide. That said…. at least one Chaos boss fight would be sweeeeeeeet! XD
Sonic Forces: Civil War.
Shadow or Sonic?
Jacob. Always Team Jacob. He should have gotten Amy. Lol. X)
I’d like to point out that all of these villans except Infinite turned on Eggman in the past, if that means anything.
I mean at this point, if Bowser and Dr. Wiley are allowed to get free passes for making the same mistakes over and over again, I think we can let Eggman slide with this, right? X)”
And Eggman turned on Knuckles. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?!?!
Not excited. Once again we get to fight metal sonic, chaos and shadow but now with zavok who I never wanted to see again and instead of eggman taking over because of using the big guns early its another supernatural force that will betray him.
Hey look, another supernatural being that will eventually revolt against Eggman because God knows how many times this plot has been used.
First things first, why is Zavok and Chaos here? It’s making me worry more about this game’s story, especially since Iizuka’s being Iizuka again and Graff is writing the story. The gameplay shown in the past couple of days is decent. Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic still play the same and the level design is decent compared to what we were shown earlier (A lot better than that god forsaken Classic Green Hill Zone.). The only thing I don’t like is how the OC plays like. It doesn’t really stick out much as they play like a Modern Sonic with weapons. However, Forces is looking better than it was pre-E3.
actually, it was confirmed that, despite his tweet, the Script was written in japan and Graff is only adapting it. (which means there’s hope).
I was personally excited for this game before, but now I am even more excited for this game now. I cannot wait to play the game when it comes out now! It’s gonna be a while before release. I liked seeing those four guys, Chaos 0, Shadow, my boy, Metal Sonic and even Zavok back to battle Sonic. The new villain, Infinite looks interesting as well.
I don’t see what’s to be excited about this all star villain. I mean, with the exception of Zavok, Shadow, Metal Sonic and Chaos has already been a villain in the same game before, namely Sonic Generations.
Trust me, if Lost World came out before Generations, Zavok would be in it as well.
I would argue Generations had even more villain, Silver and Biolizard.
Heck, just add all of the godly villain in Forces if they could. Dark Gaia, Time Eater, Mephiles, Ifrit, Eggman Nega, Nega Wisp.
the difference is that they weren’t “villains” in Generations, they were just bosses, with ZERO relevance to the sad excuse for a story generations had, This time around, there IS a plot, they are there for a reason, and people are excited to see these beloved characters (and Zavok) being important to the story again!
From what I heard, Classic Sonic’s presence is because Eggman displaced him into the present. Thus preventing any failure to Classic Eggman’s world domination.
But what doesn’t make sense, is that with Eggman ruling the world, he never had any reason to create Metal Sonic, release Chaos and Shadow, or enslave Zavok.
If you put classic sonic in the future then that means that modern sonic wouldn’t be there because he would never have grown into modern sonic in the first place and the only sonic that would be there would be the one that disappeared from the past all the way up until the present. However I can see eggman releasing shadow and chaos and enslaving zavok while sonic was gone in order to rewrite history as sonic would not be there to stop Eggman’s plot with the shadow and chaos and all of that
appearently Classic Sonic is from another dimmension now.
I have no idea how the hell that works but at least makes it less convoluted than time travel and it’s easier to not mess up
Well well well well well well well…isn’t this a sight for sore eyes. Shadow? Zavok? Chaos? Metal Sonic!? I feel something’s a miss here again. Either this is an alliance or this is just a pick n choose parallel reality tear that even I never well heheh totally expected. I guess this really was SANIC WEIRDMAGEDDON after all? TO BE CONTINUED…
But Zavok fell helplessly to his untimely demise in a fiery pit of molten lava, Gollum style? Or were we, as the audience, only led to believe that he died? Or is this a result of time being altered by this mysterious Infinite character? If so, does this mean Silver and Elise actually remember Sonic and Iblis also succeeded in shrouding the future world in flame? Either way, with Chaos back, I am sold. I simply can’t wait to play this is glorious 4K on my PC gaming rig this fall/winter!
Sonic 06 isn’t canon, which is true even if it were canon as it would canonically be erased and the timeline for those 10 years would be changed a little, which would include all of Sonic’s adventures being rewritten into the storyline we know from Sonic 1 to present. This means that in the world of 06 Sonic probably met everyone differently, including Silver and Blaze as we saw. (The game claims Shadow had been with GUN for multiple years in its timeline). In the current timeline, Sonic meets Tails on Westside Island, Knuckles on Angel Island, Shadow in Central City, and Blaze during Sonic Rush as well as Silver in Sonic Rivals. Of course they remember him, assuming everything Silver now does in the present coincides with his time’s history (meaning it doesn’t rewrite his timeline, just maintains it)
As for Zavok, there’s no confirmation that they died. Eggman escaped the white limbo and Shadow survived a fall from space (which I don’t think was all the way from space cuz it looked like Chaos Control to me.) Plus Zavok and Zazz were in party games and I guess it’d be weird to use them if they’re done and over. lol
Sorry for the long answer. XD;;
Everything I wanted to know and more! Awesome! Thanks!
Idk about this. For starters, it really looks like Mephiles 2.0 tbh.
Also, “Infinite”, not going to say anything but the last game with something related to “Infinite” of recent isn’t doing too hot *cough*MvCInfinite*Cough*
Also, I thought Eggman was the main threat here? Is Infinite the force Eggman is using to take over the world? Why is Shadow here? I thought he finally realized that Maria wanted him to protect the world not take it over. Chaos I thought was at peace and went to Heaven with Tikal, why is he here now?
Zavok is one of the only few I can understand since he reasonably wants revenge for the Deadly Six falling at Sonic’s hands. Metal Sonic, well…eh, I never cared about his inclusions past Sonic Heroes, the last game where I honestly felt he was a legit threat and an actual character as opposed to Eggman’s convient robotic double of Sonic with no real personality.
Chaos didn’t die. He’s secondary guardian of the master Emerald, as can be seen in Sonic Battle, resuming his role seen in Sonic Adventure before he was corrupted with anger. (I’m going to assume the emeralds are all related to the Chao somehow and it’d be cool to see that lore explored XD)
Gotta love Sonic Battle.
Here’s hoping the new villain turns out to be a female underneath that mask cause seriously we have NO FEMALE VILLAINS WHATSOEVER. Not one. Except Sky Patrol (but we don’t talk about that game). And here’s also hoping it’s not another hedgehog. No more hedgehogs PLEASE!
Merlina.
Ok yes but I mean a female villain who we can have as a recurring character who’s evil from start to finish. I guess I should have been more specific. I know Zeena is also a girl but she didn’t feel like an evil person (none of the Zeti could be taken seriously enough to be considered villains imo).
Merlina was a great boss fight by the way. And I love Crush 40, but it was really nice to have female vocals for once as well.
well… there wasn’t that many female villains, there was Merlina, Wendy Witchcart, Zeena, Carrotia.
and if you wanna include the comics there’s the Iron Queen, and some of the Egg-Bosses (Clove, Thunderbolt, Abyss, and Nephtys)
I knew Shadow and Rouge would be join forces with Eggman. Just as I suspected. But where’s Rouge anyway? Shouldn’t be out there with Shadow and the other villains? She’s one of Eggman’s henchmen too during Sonic Adventure 2.
Rouge is a G.U.N. agent, she was never a villain (I’m guessing you haven’t played SA2, she was Undercover the whole time pretending to side with Eggman while spying on him and trying to get information on Project Shadow for the government), and Shadow hasn’t been evil since Adventure 2 either, so my guess is that there’s a reason why he’s there (maybe he’s undercover, or being manipulated, my theory is that Rouge is captured by Eggman or Infinite and they are using her as hostage to force Shadow to cooperate).
Was shadow not killed at the end of SA2 though? He fell down to Earth after defeating the BioLizard alongside Sonic.
Interesting. “How can anyone be dumb enough to mistake Shadow for Sonic?”
“This weird ghost cat hedgehog anthro that’s red and not at all crystalline but wears a mask looks kinda like Mephiles! O:”
Lol, true.
