Comics Industry Publication PREVIEWS Reveals New IDW Sonic Art
The newest issue of comic distributor Diamond Comic’s industry magazine PREVIEWS focuses attention on IDW’s forthcoming Sonic series. Diamond revealed the cover days ago, showcasing gorgeous art featuring new character Tangle the Lemur from experienced Sonic artist Tyson Hesse. The biggest news contained within is an early look at the Sonic-focused pages within, including a peek at the as-yet-unrevealed cover for Sonic #3.
Accompanying the cover, a two-page spread within the magazine advertises the first four issues as a “Gem of the Month,” a label applied to comics that Diamond uses to advise local comic stores of the month’s biggest releases. A closer look reveals a Sonic and Knuckles cover for issue 3 with art from Jen Hernandez. As with much of IDW’s Sonic talent, Hernandez has ties to Archie’s Sonic books, having done covers and pencils for various issues throughout the Shattered World Crisis arc. Most recently, she was responsible for the unreleased “Kooky Kitchen” variant cover for Sonic #294, the final issue Archie solicited before announcing the book’s hiatus and subsequent cancellation. Hernandez has also done art for IDW’s long-running My Little Pony series.
IDW’s Sonic series begins in April, with four issues shipping each week. The covers revealed so far are the (B) variants by established Sonic artists Tracy Yardley, Adam Bryce Thomas, Jen Hernandez, and Evan Stanley. The book’s debut will be accompanied by a handful of variant covers by the likes of Rafa Knight, Kieran Gates, Jamal Peppers, and new artist Nathlie Fourdraine, with the main Tyson Hesse covers coming together to form a connected image.
You need to make a retraction/correction. That is NOT Jen’s cover in this month’s PREVIEWS, and to her knowledge, she is actually not responsible for ANY cover or cover variant of IDW Sonic.

She confirms it as a user reply in this thread.
Tell that to IDW. They’re the ones saying that. Why? I don’t know. But we just relayed official word.
No, it Nathalie’s, but Jen is doing the B cover for that issue, It has been confirmed multiple times by IDW.
#3 is clearly the best cover shown so far, everything else looks too much like Archie.
Super Peel-Out!
Why a peel-out?
Issue 3 has a nice cover why did they take so long to show it?
I figured that they were trying not to spoil Rough and Tumble, but the cover has a “Not Final Art” disclaimer next to it, so it probably just wasn’t done yet.
No idea…
Of course, still no word between IDW and Sega on when Sally Acorn and the rest of the Freedom Fighters (Bunnie, Antoine, Rotor) will take part in IDW Sonic. Maybe towards the end of 2018 or Summer 2018 more or less?
Between now and never.
But it’s not yet IDW’s and/or Sega’s decision! Not even the Sonic writer (Ian Flynn) himself!
*Signs* Listen, Sally and the freedom fighters might not come back ever again. They might come back someday.. but it’s up to Sega first. And we should always respect them. For those who wanted them back, if they won’t show up again, then please try to be mature about it. Just like I did when Ken Penders’ characters were remove from Archie. So let’s just be mature about it, ok?
Ken Penders Sonic characters are about to appear in the Lara-Su Chronicles self-published by Mr. Penders himself!
His own comic sucks you know.
And when are you going to stop bragging about the freedom fighters coming back? I do like them, but it’s time for us to just grow up!
Just being honest here.
IT’S STILL NOT OFFICIAL YET! THE STAY TUNED NOTICE IS STILL POSTED VIA IDW AND SEGA VIA 2017 IDW SONIC TOWN HALL NEW YORK COMIC CON PANEL! THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS STILL HAVE A CHANCE! UNDERSTAND??
He hasn’t been bragging. And how many more times do I need to tell people on here to stop telling people who want the Freedom Fighters back to “grow up”?
Other than thr two all-caps replies he gave (stop that), he’s been mature about it.
@SSF1991
Not that I don’t agree with you on the whole “grow up” thing, but dude has hardly been any modicum of mature about this. Not when they’re posting almost literally the same thing in every response (even when characters weren’t mentioned at all) on every single IDW topic. “Grow up” is completely the wrong words, but “chill out” and “let it go” come to mind.
I take the “Let it go” phrase since it was inspired by Disney’s Frozen.
“Not when they’re posting almost literally the same thing in every response (even when characters weren’t mentioned at all) on every single IDW topic.”
That’s not being immature, that’s being repetitive. It’s a big question that a lot of Sonic comic fans have had for months. It’s the elephant in the room. So yeah, people are going to bring it up in a lot of IDW articles. The guy hasn’t told anyone off, hasn’t been condescending, hasn’t insulted anyone. He’s just wanting the Freedom Fighters back. As I said, DTH needs to stop with the all-cap responses. But that’s the only thing he’s done wrong. At this point, people have been acting more immature towards DTH, and it needs to stop.
Also, did you notice this petition?: www.change.org/p/save-the-freedom-fighters-by-putting-them-in-the-idw-sonic-comics
I DO WANT SALLY ACORN AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS BACK IN IDW SONIC! SEGA OWNS THEM!
I do too man. Best option is to just keep your cash in your pockets until Ian/IDW say something positively concrete. Personally I expect the worse (because sega can’t be trusted anymore).
And if Silver and all his bad-game-bland-“message from the future”-bs can keep coming back for god knows why then Sally/Rotor/Bunnie/Antoine/Nicole can return as well even if no longer FFs and with changed backstories.
This is a comic book world were anything can happen. Heck the Freedom Fighters might take a portal to meet this world’s Sonic o something like that. Look what they did to Shadow in the first Sonic Universe comic. He met the Sonic X versions.
Still waiting for Andy Price to jump on board with his art-style.
Honestly, DTH1971 HAS been going on and on about the Freedom Fighters in a somewhat annoying fashion. It’s likely to help people move on if they don’t return simply because people will be so annoyed with the comments that they won’t want them back.
I didn’t really see anyone tell ppl who wanted freedom fighters back to grow up. I saw someone tell someone else who keeps blurting out over and over the same thing and ignoring what anyone else says to grow up. And it wasn’t even in an insulting manner. Sorry Donnie. I think you’re wrong on this one. ^^; Fortunately I’m just very late to the party. lol
