Android Users Reporting Issues with Sonic Runners
It looks like Sonic Runners may be off to a bit of a shaky start for some people. Since the game’s worldwide release yesterday, some users have reported issues with getting the game to work on their Android phones and tablets, experiencing problems ranging from missing pictures and sound effects to the game simply refusing to launch. Particularly frustrated users have taken to the Google Play Store to voice their complaints; as of the time of this writing, the game currently sits at an average rating of 3.3 out of 5, culled from just over 2,800 reviews. Closer inspection reveals that approximately 29% of those are one-star reviews, which is the lowest score an app can receive; that said, nearly 41% gave the game a glowing five-star review, and another 22% rated it at three or four stars, so if you go by this metric alone, it seems that more people are enjoying the game than are having significant issues with it.
For its part, the iOS version of Runners has fared much better. The current version of the game currently sits at a 4.5 out of 5 on the iTunes Store with around 350 published reviews. Though a few comments do mention the game crashing with some frequency, this hasn’t stopped the vast majority of players from having a positive experience; a resounding 73% of the aforementioned reviews give the game a full five-star rating, while just 6% rate the game at one star. Speaking subjectively, I’ve encountered no significant problems with the game after installing it on my iPhone 6 yesterday morning and playing it rather heavily throughout the day, but your mileage may vary in that regard.
Interestingly, the Android version of the game claims to support OS versions as old as Gingerbread (version 2.3.3, specifically, which was released in early 2011), whereas the iOS version requires iOS 8, which is the most recent release. With over four years of devices to support, this means that the Android version could potentially be running on a dizzyingly large range of hardware. One can draw some parallels between this situation and that which a PC gamer might face when they’re unable to play something – only a few people many encounter issues, but it’s quite frustrating nonetheless. The full extent of the Android incompatibilities is not yet known, so we’ll continue to keep an eye on the situation, and we’ll have a full review available in due course. In the meantime, have you encountered problems with Sonic Runners on your Android phone or tablet? Let us know what device you have and what your problems are in the comments below!

*Game is Incompatible*
WAT???
Every time I go to the Google Play Store to search for Sonic Runners, it doesn’t show up. A couple of people have provided me with a link to the game, and when I go to it this message comes up: “Your device isn’t compatible with this version.” It made me feel as if SEGA only wants Sonic Runners to work for a select brand of Android phones.
As I mentioned numerous times on my Twitter, Google Play simply refuses to let me download the game, citing that my ‘device was incompatible’
Except I have a Samsung Galaxy S5.
With Lollipop.
WHAT.
So glad I’m not the only one getting the “incompatible” issue with a Galaxy S5. I don’t get it. I had Sonic Runners running on it before with the APK install.
Sigh 🙁
Hahaha…
So Sonic Team decides to go mobile because mobile games are way cheaper to develop. less complicated and accessible… But they still fail. Because they forget that with mobile games (unlike consoles) there are many types of mobile devices and many different hardwares.
SEGA, you just can’t find an easy way out of this. If you want to make a good game, you still need to put an effort into it and you still need to fine tune it and test it properly. If choose to make a game that requires minimum resources and minimum time and effort to make, you need to solve compatibility issues instead.
Except Sonic Runners was running just fine for everyone who tested it with the APK install, so something else had to have happened in the process of getting the game to be released worldwide.
I’ve read some reviews on Runners and found that the latest update on the game made it crash and not work on some mobile users who had the game working for them before.
Giving a bad review because a game from 2015 doesn’t run on your 2008 phone is a little silly and the blame absolutely does not lie with SEGA in this case except maybe not putting “Don’t complain if it doesn’t work on your ancient device.”
Nexus 7 (2102) user here, running Lollipop.
The game is unplayable. Seriously. The lagging is so bad I can’t even get to the first level to play it.
Since the update, I’ve been able to play the first level.
I then got a stream of notifications that caused so much lag I had to force reboot the tablet.
Then, when viewing the Achievements, the entire game stopped responding; moments later, the tablet rebooted by itself.
Sonic Runners isn’t a game, it’s a device killer.
iOS 8 and the upcoming 9 support every iOS device released since 2011 so it’s not that big of a deal, it only really impacts those that have held back on upgrading to 8. Still though they shouldn’t cut off 7 unless it’s a absolute necessary.
Here’s a suggestion for anyone who hasn’t installed it yet and want to get Classic Sonic and has time on their hands, when you first couple short episodes you’ll get two free shots at special roulette with a 12% chance to unlock him, if both those chances fail uninstall and reinstall the game until you get him. You’ll also have a early score advantage due to having two characters making it a breeze to get through the first dozen episodes without having to stop for lives to regenerate.
They really did cut off 7, since it was working on my iPod with 7.1.2 last time I imported the Japanese .ipa. That’s kind of disappointing.
Yeah 8 is a mess on the iPod 5 and iPhone 4S and the supposed smoother 9 is still months away, this why they should still support 7.
Only issue I had was Charmy’s profile in the game said he’s a playable character, and says he’s a super strong echidna named “Knuckles”
Now I can’t use either version. The newest update won’t even let me get passed the title screen, and sits there forever trying to connect to the servers. Can’t even get a foot on the ground before it crashes.
Come on, Sonic Runners, gotta keep your feet right on the ground! There’s no time to look around(for another device)!
Android games usually have more problems that needs fixing than ISO Games. It might be for a multitude of reasons but I speculate it’s due to how many different types of phones there are that run on Android..
Oh well, I have an IPad, I don’t care.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!
This is SOOOO priceless ! This is Marianas Trench kind of all time low, WAY below ’06.
They make a piddly app game that looks like the miscarriaged chimaera mix between Lost World and Generations, they soft release it months earlier, they hype it up with DLCs and EVEN a soundtrack (????)……….Yet it doesn’t work at the official release.
Sega, you are a bunch of pathetic buffoons. Not even the most pitiful of your products can work anymore.
and yet, you’re still here. Having fun?
You really made the following way too easy to do.
This is SOOOO priceless ! This is Marianas Trench kind of all time low, WAY below Shadow the Hedgehog.
They make a piddly game that looks like the miscarriaged chimaera mix between SA1 and Busby 3D, they rush it out months earlier, they hype it up with a tech demo at E3 2005 with DLCs and EVEN a soundtrack (????)……….Yet it doesn’t work at the official release and never get’s patched.
So no it would have to do a lot worse to be below 06. This doesn’t mean they didn’t botch the launch of this thing however.
It’s not compatible with Note 4
Not cool sega, not cool >:(
I’m probably one of the few people who have no issues with it, man am I lucky. Hope they fix this soon though cause it’s a shame people aren’t able to play this little fun game.
I’m also one of the lucky people who were able to get the game running(I have an LG G2). I enjoy the game, but I really can’t stand the loading screens compared to Sonic Dash.
Yeah I’d really like to know what exactly it’s loading on startup because it takes more damn time loading up than more intensive games like Infinity Blade 3 and Spider-Man Unlimited, the loading screen after the title screen even has to load but this might have something to do with it connecting to Sega’s servers. Level loads are mercifully short at least for me.
I wonder if this is running on Unity like Dash or something custom.
The title screen has a CriWare logo; not sure what that means in terms of game engine though
People aren’t whining. Sonic fanatics are because they’re showing ungratefulness. The launch has gone well. It just doesn’t work with older phones because of its strong optimization and high demand. Who the hell expects a mobile phone game launching simultaneously worldwide to launch without a single problem?
These commenting here and Sonic Stadium don’t have to bitch and moan, its free to play. I downloaded it yesterday on my LG L90 and it works flawlessly.
Don’t download it if you want to complain about it not functioning. If it doesn’t work, blame yourself for having a phone 3 years out of date. Being too cheap to upgrade when you knew it was time to.
Maybe think before you speak. The phone fails to load or function on even the latest and greatest hardware. Honestly, it actually sounds like people with older phones are having MORE luck getting it to work. My GS5 w/ Lollipop isn’t even compatible for download.
The other GLARING issue here is that this game worked JUST FUCKING FINE on all of these phones MONTHS ago, during said soft launch. What the fuck did they do to their game to break it between now and then?
Ungratefulness? What exactly do I owe Sega gratitude for? Making a game they want me to spend time/money on? II don’t care if it’s f2p. I still have to watch a fuckton of ads they’re making money from, and they only made the game in the first place to push IAPs – it’s not a goddamn charity.
I think people need to organize a way to complain in mass about the locking of characters behind a 6% chance at a wheel, it amounts to nothing more than gambling and is very cynical more so than what I’ve seen out of Rovio and Gameloft.
Other F2P games on mobile give you a guaranteed means to unlock characters if you want them, Dash for example had them on it’s wheel (that could be played free daily), as daily challenge rewards and purchasable with red rings hell right now you unlock those damn Angry Birds just by playing the game without having to spend anything but your time.
It’s almost like they want the mainstream media to tear into them after lil’ Timmy develops a gambling habit because he really wanted to unlock Charmy.
This would be a priceless media reactions.
Yeah for sure, they’ve taking plenty of shots at F2P before, but that’s just been for parents get charged out the ass because of their kid wanting more energy and items, it’s different in this game because it’s literal gambling and you have no other option if you want limited time characters. It’s super damn shady and spoils what is otherwise a very solidly designed one button platformer.
It being free doesn’t excuse it from criticism. If you weren’t such a jerk you would get that, or you’re just baiting for replies as per usual SegaZone.
