Gotta Go Fask 10K Update: Week 5
I’m almost there.
Amid an hours long daily commute and coverage of Sonic Boom and New York Comic Con, five weeks of training is now under my belt. I’ve torn up 42 and a half miles of treadmill, built up my strength, increased my stamina, and built up my endurance ahead of the big event on November 2nd. Just yesterday, I completed a 4.5 mile run, in one shot, and at a pace in the eight and a half minute range.
It’s not going to qualify me for any competitive event, but it doesn’t have to. I’m doing this for me, and for the school I’m supporting, the LARC School in New Jersey.
I’ve also been fortunate to avoid injury. I’ve had a workout routine spanning four times a week, and I’ve strained muscles the wrong way on runs less than this. It’s typically meant shutting down for a week or two at a time. I’ve been lucky this time around. An October surprise so close to the event would be an unpleasant one.
But the bulk of training is yet to come. This week, I will clock 10 miles, including a 5-mile shot, which I have only done once before–and not very well, I might add. The following week, I add another half mile to the routine. Then it’s race week. Somewhere in between, I’ll traverse the Ben Franklin Bridge’s pedestrian walkways once or twice more. It’s been a while since I’ve attempted to calm my nerves over the Delaware. The views will be spectacular. Hopefully, my heart rate won’t be spectacularly high.
Your support to the cause has been incredible in the past week, and it’s my hope that will continue in the final few weeks. We are still a ways from the goal of $2,500, but we currently stand at $406, in large part thanks to the generous support of our friends at TSSZ affiliate Sonic Radio. Our cumulative total jumped $300 in a week. I know that, with your help, we can do even better, and bring a good future for a lot of disabled children and young adults.
I’ll keep running. If our goal is reached, I’ll run on Sunday, November 2nd with a hot pink coat of hair. All I ask is that you keep donating. You’ll see progress reports here every week up to race day.
Thank you.
