Fan Fridays: Sonic 3 Complete
Sonic fans have begged for a remastered port of Sonic 3 & Knuckles for a while now. Although that doesn’t seem to be on the horizon as of yet, you can still quench your thirst for an updated game thanks to a fan hack called Sonic 3 Complete. The hack makes a lot of tweaks and changes that change the overall experience while still working within the confines of what the Genesis can do. In fact, the list of changes is way too long to cover in full, so allow me to cherry-pick a few of the more interesting ones for you.
For starters, Sonic 3‘s presentation elements can now extend into Sonic & Knuckles levels, and zone orders correspond with how Sonic Team originally intended the game to flow; Flying Battery now exists between Carnival Night and Ice Cap, for example. Additional effort has been made to smooth the transitions between zones as well. Tails now has a unique intro sequence, the Easy and Normal difficulty modes from Sonic Jam are present alongside a new Casual mode, and Sonic’s controls can be customized to behave like other games in the series, such as Sonic CD. Additionally, Genesis-compatible versions of the music tracks exclusive to the PC version are available to use in-game.
I could go on and on, but it would probably be better if you saw everything for yourself. You can download Sonic 3 Complete here and its additional, optional patches here. You can also read more about the hack at its Sonic Retro page. Starting next week, I’m hoping to start getting Fan Fridays into the holiday spirit, so if you have a festive project you want the world to know about, send us a link at fansonfriday@tssznews.com!
