EDITORIAL: Emulation Zone Attack – Our Thoughts

Well, we devoted 5 days’ coverage to it, and even an audio news. And I consider it to be one of the most major problems to occur in the Sonic community for a long time, since the days of the Simplenet Crisis. You all now what I’m talking about- the attacks on various Emulation sites hosted by ZTNet.

I’ve heard both sides of the story. I’ve shared a whole bunch of those facts with you. But, because I really tried to cover this story with as little bias as possible, none of you really know what I think of all this. So, that’s why I’m writing this.

To be quite honest, Chadwick did have sufficient reason to do this. He had loads of traffic coming to his servers, and that can really bog you down. But did Chadwick really have to direct those sites to pornography? Absolutely not.

I agree with Andy Wolan, and I would have been fine with just some sort of weird error message. But, of course, that didn’t happen. And, although there is no way to prove it, minors could have easily seen those.

Do I think Chadwick was wrong for what he did? In a sense, yes. But do I also think that Zac Williams, part of ZTNet, should have been caught so off-guard about this? Heck no. That’s the responsibility you have to take when hosting sites.

But, it’s over now. The SSRG is back, and all is well. Maybe now, people will be more critical of security on sites. We’ve already seen what happens when security is at a minimum. Let’s hope it never happens again.
