Sonic: Night Of The Werehog
SO, WHY DOES THIS HAVE A SEPERATE SECTION?
You are likely familiar in some form with Sonic: Night of the Werehog, also known as Sonic & Chip: House of Horror. It was a CGI animated short, a tie-in with Sonic Unleashed and featured the already Werehog-afflicted Sonic mid-adventure with Chip. There was a series of three smaller shorts hidden as collectables within the game itself, but this was a standalone and more of a feature. A 3D version even played as part of SEGA’s Joypolis park in Japan for a time. It was pretty good!
Now, a long time back during the ‘peak years’ of the Shadow Depository, Kevin came across a half-Japanese, half-Korean website operated by an apparent member of the development team. Who? No idea. It was a bit of a mess, frankly. But it had a whole bunch of developmental stuff that clearly should not have been there. Short on time a number of ‘high priority’ looking items were snagged.
A couple of days later and the entire site was gone. Damn.
Now putting this up at the time would’ve been a bit rude – and a conflict of interest for Kevin – so it was decided they’d be put away for “another day”. Over the years we’ve put out little bits on occasions, like the sadly now lost video of ‘work in progress’ CGI and a few of the storyboards. There’s still a lot that has never been released however, thanks to it being stuck somewhere on the old Sonic Wrecks-era PC. Until now, that is…
THE SOUNDTRACK
One of the things nabbed was a series of mp3 files that was the soundtrack. Kinda.
To explain; there was no tag information on these files. Zero. Which is not helpful. Nor was there any information on the website/portfolio…. thing. The only clue were the filenames themselves, which had a few English characters at the end. So files were something like 01-OPN.mp3 – which clearly meant ‘Open’ or ‘Opening’ and when listened to that was confirmed. But as for the rest… no idea!
Just to make things even more fun, the tracks also weren’t strictly in order! Nor were they the exact music featured in the final version. For some only a portion was actually used before it blended in to another track. Others tracks had parts tweaked in some way or had some additional instrument flourishes/transitions added over the top in the final mix.
After much scrolling back-and-forth through both the animation and the tracks, we’ve endeavoured to put them back in the correct order based on what they appear to be. The files also have some ‘tracks off a soundtrack album’ sounding names now too, based in part on what’s happening in the short and also on the filename letters.
Even though it’s not a 100% ‘true’ soundtrack it’s basically 95% of one – and that’s 95% more than we all previously had. Enjoy!
Also thanks to AstroSeedP we can add the final version of one of the tracks as a track 12. Presented here separately as it is a little different in quality.
STORYBOARDS
The below are storyboards, including apparent corrections and changes. This version differs a fair bit from the version seen in the final cut. There is no female ghost for instance in this early version. Pages are in ”order’, although there are several which are not numbered which can be found at the end. There are also several alternate pages. In one Chip gains the addition of a ‘shield’, while in the first page the children are given a slight redesign.
