It is also “not a sequel to any previous game released”.

“Not a sequel to any previous game released”
Suuuure, that’s why you’re totally not using the Sonic R “R” in the title. Tooooootally has nothing to do with it…
Its totally not a sequel man, is just that every Sonic racing game since Sonic R starts with R, can’t believe you didn’t notice.
Sonic R
Sonic Riders
Sonic Rivals
Sonic R?????
It’s not though. The trailer shows Sonic’s Blue Star in the trailer, so the game looks like it’ll be in line with the All Stars Racing game more than it does Sonic R. Considering Sumo Digital (assuming it is Sumo working on this) loves to sneak in lots of past SEGA references into their games, it’s not exactly out of the question to think they designed to logo to give it a throwback to Sonic R.
I’m fairly certain Aaron means to say it won’t be a sequel to the All Stars Racing game since, according to rumors, the game will be more Sonic oriented than it is SEGA oriented.
Pretty much, I couldn’t have said it better.
I’m still waiting for them to confirm Sumo Digital is developing this game, hope is not from Sonic Team for a number of reasons…
My point wasn’t that I think it’s a Sonic R sequel or a direct Sonic All Stars Racing sequel (though looking back I can understand how it could be interpreted that way. My bad). My actual point is that in most cases each Sonic installment tends to be both “a sequel” and “not a sequel” to games that came out before.
Being a racing game alone makes it somewhat of a sequel to the All Stars Racing series, even if at the end of the day it’s a completely Sonic-focused racer like everyone else is speculating (myself included). It’s in the same sense that Sonic Forces was technically not “Generations 2” but in a large way was still a spiritual sequel to that game, based on the nostalgia pandering, references to the game itself, and the attempt to emulate that gameplay style. The same way that Generations is technically a sequel to Colors due to the explanation as to how Eggman discovered the Time Eater.
Most of those examples are based on stories but even just in concept alone you could have that same mentality. I’m not saying it’s the correct way to look at the series, but it’s part of the loose style the series has had where everything kind of feeds into each other in a way that even if it isn’t a direct continuation of one story or adventure it’s still a spiritual successor of sorts in how it tries to pay tribute to the past while (hopefully) trying to introduce something new and on it’s own merits.
So in the end, I think it’s somewhat pointless to try and have to make a disclaimer like that about how it’s “totally not a sequel” when in many cases, like with Forces, for all intents and purposes it could still be thought as that way. At best it only denies that it will have a “2” in the title or the exact same title as a previous game, otherwise spiritually it could still fulfill the same purpose.
@Hero
Yeah, and how does Sega dare go for the name Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing when we all know it’s just Sonic Drift 3.
Look like I was right. It could be something that is base on Mario Kart 8 perhaps.
I called this last year. Glad to know my intuition was right.
Like I said back then, now is the perfect time for a spin-off that the whole Sonic gang can participate in. We’re still in cooldown from the previous major releases and a low-stakes side game with the extended cast is just what the doctor ordered after everything that’s been going on.
I agree with you there, hopefully after the next mayor release we can get a new Sonic fighting game with the whole gang!
Hopefully they can “not make a sequel” to Sonic Battle with Blaze and Marine added.
You mean you want a direct sequel to Battle or a brand new Sonic fighting game?
Either. I really like Battle’s mechanics though so a sequel I would probably like a little more.
@SKAI CYAN
Yeah I love Battle mechanics and freedom, if they ever make a sequel I hope they make the gameplay much more deep and complex, with more moves and characters, hopefully it will be for home consoles this time!
I’m losing my mind right now. First Mania +, then Mania shorts, now a new Sonic racing game??
I have no idea what to expect.
I mean… The sound of a car is a little turn-off, but I think it’s time for a purely Sonic racer now.
If that R didn’t look so much like the one from Sonic R, I’d say this could be another Sonic All Stars (minus the SEGA Characters), another Riders..? (Never really enjoyed these.. ) or another R.
.. or it could be a new racing game unattatched to any other game like they say.
Either way I’m so excited for this!
I don’t know what to expect, I was hoping for a new Sonic racing game on foot, then again Sumo Digital did a wonderful job with the Sega racing games so if they’re making this I’m sure it will be great.
And personally I prefer it being 100% Sonic, that way they can add more characters and stages from Sonic than in All-Stars, and they could add a Mission Mode similar to Racing Transformed’s but with a story mode to make it more interesting.
I’m curious what the title is. You can tell the last word is definitely “RACING” given the ‘R,’ the ‘G’ at the end. And that the two letters next to ‘R’ look silloetted like ‘A’ and ‘C.’ I’m mostly just wondering about what is Before it. Obviously it’ll have Sonic in it. But will it just be ‘SONIC RACING’ or ‘SUPER SONIC RACING,’ or what.
“Sonic Drift Racing” calling it now. I’m probably wrong, lol.
I’m praying for an equally amazing soundtrack as R has. Full-on dance, no-dubstep.
Also with an all Sonic centeric cast, there’s no excuse for Blaze being playable this time around.
I loved “R” back in the day. I played it way too much to determine all the secret ways to leave parts of the courses. Loved the upbeat music as well.
Obviously a new “R” would be great for me, yet I would prefer SEGA not abandon the greater line of SEGA franchises in a new racing game. There are still many works left unexplored like Vectorman, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, etc.
If SEGA were to devote a whole party game to Sonic’s canon that did not require narrative cohesion, I would hope the company would finally reach into its abundant backlog and use characters from across differing versions of Sonic lore. A fun party game is devoted to the fandom generally, so why not explore old characters from the Sonic Bible, Fleetway, DIC, and so on. The Sonic Mania news is promising since Mighty and Ray were thought lost to legal issues. Their resurrection could be the tip of the iceberg or a flash in the pan. I hope for the former because I could only see fun and humor being the outcome of having all the SEGA cast joined by the likes of Porker Lewis, Rotor Walrus, and Scratch and Grounder among others.
It might be hard to stomach Chris Thorndyke 🙂 , but I would be satisfied with the likes of such unique inclusions if SEGA started to incorporate and own up to its past decisions and not treat them all as failed attempts.
Just imagine playing as Honey the cat and tossing a MotoBug at Sara the OVA girl to win first place on the Knothole track. The Sonic franchise has many mixed timelines and intents, but a game like this could foreseeably satisfy all Mobians, Megadroid Boomers, Blast Processors, Dreamcasters, and Drive-in Carhops.
I’m calling it now, since it’s not a sequel, I will say it’s a remake of Sonic R but with cars instead. So it’s more than likely we will be seeing some stages from Sonic R or something.
Ok this Sonic R thing is going to be awful.
